  1. restriction from license is a pardox on New 'No Military Use' GPL For GPU · · Score: 1

I'm only going to quote this short excerpt from the article about the modified license and just how confused I am by it:

"the program and its derivative work will neither be modified or executed to harm any human being nor through inaction permit any human being to be harmed." (paragraph #3)

Now just HOW the hell does this make sense? I well enough understand the part about it not being allowed to be used to hurt /+ kill other people, etc - but doesn't the "inaction" part go against that?

    Now for some hypothetical situations:

#1: say some branch of the military could somehow (make something up, damnit) save lives with this software? So by disallowing the military to use it, those people are now going to die.

#2: One of the warmongering Mid-East, Asian, or African countries that would LOVE nothing more than to set off a nuke on a Western nation uses this software to create the geometry for their warhead (you think they're going to give a shit?), and whatever unlucky country is their target (be it the US, UK, or the country as big as your 6'x6' "backyard" condominium patio) could have to processing power to run whatever software needed to find where this nuke is being made and send Rambo in, saving thousands if not millions of lives from a populated city, even if at the cost of 30 or 50 scientists, guards, etc - but now because they can't use this beowulf clustering software, everybody effected by the bomb gets turned to ash, skin falls of, etc, and nobody can live inside ground zero because of fallout.

OK, enough totally bullshit situations, but do you see just how little sense this makes to me? Maybe (alright, more than just maybe) I'm over-thinking and over-exagerating a lot here, but this ideal of theirs seems impossible. Great, now I'm gonna sit up thinking about it all night and wake up dead in the morning with an aneurism...

...we could BUY the west bank, Gaza, and the Golan Heights...

Just because you buy a dog, whats to keep if from running away? Not to say people in the middle east have the intelligence of animals, but that the way countries like Palistine and Iran hate the US and other Western nations, it would not just probably, but positively make international relations worse. Would they accept the land as a "gift"? I truly doubt it. Reason #1: would you want pity from the country you've hated since the day you were born? Reason #2: are you really gonna tell me the US govt' wouldn't have more strings attached than a master puppeteer? (which of course none of which Palestine or the rest of the Mid-East would like)

The parent post might well be flamebait, and this one (my response) might be just as much, but I think the parent needs an answer...

Sorry if you thought I was picking a fight, but I do believe my post gave a "to each their own" message that I prefer hardware in a PC while others prefer the software that comes with Macs - and that since I dont care about the software since I would never use it, there's no reason for me to buy it...

So, get a high end workstation...

That was my point and the point of a lot of other people - you dont buy a Mac for the hardware. Which is why for anything that I would consider decent hardware I would have to pay out the ass for - if there's cheaper hardware at the same performance level and reliability, I'll go with the cheaper one. And so, since Mac hardware is more expensive and the OS meant to run on it isn't as compatible as could be with the games I want, I'll stick with PCs

I think you also completely ignored the part where I said

However, I gotta say, the only thing that has me thinking of switching to Mac is when I took a look at Vista about a month ago - theres no other way to describe it other than I hated pretty much everything about it (I'm sacrificing how much of my CPU or GPU for those half assed transparent windows??? I think not...)

You claim that Apple haters can't come up with or ignore facts

It's funny, because the Mac fanbois at least hate Windows because it sucks and they can give reasons. Apple haters just seem to hate Apple and the logic is missing.

when you yourself can't seem to show me any facts. I know the answers should be obvious (malware, viruses, shitty default UI, etc, etc) but what about the faults in Mac such as the sheer amount of software incompatible, just how open to attacks is OSX? Security through obscurity is not something I favor (wasn't there a Slashdot article a while back about how Mac succumbed to one of the oldest tricks in the book - a Unix executable with the extension .jpg added?), what if I get tired of "Brushed Metal" or the other few themes it supports? At least with Windows I can install Stardock Window Blinds and use an extensive library of user created skins (and the ones the company themselves makes - hell, theres even an OSX skin).

I should probably stop now before I say something I really shouldn't and end up with nothing but pure flamebait (that is, if I haven't already)...

basically, people worried about deleting their cookies because of this crap are paranoid. cmon, do you honestly think you are that much of a threat to the govt that they would sift through Google's search logs? even in the news, the people that blow crap up with info they got offa the net - the authorities only find that crap out after they committ the crime and go through their computer. so what makes people think they'll find out (or give a rats ass) that you use Google to look at porn???

  5. Software or hardware on Apple's Leopard Strategy to Kill Microsoft and Dell? · · Score: 1

I disagree - I, for example, value the hardware customization you can get with a PC (not just a Dell - or rather anything but Dell), while you seem to value the software suites Apple bundles with their Mac systems. It's all a matter of personal preference - again, since I don't give a crap about having iMovie and the rest of the iLife junk (it's junk to me anyway) adding to the cost of a machine, so it would simply seem like overpriced hardware.

So for me, I consider my HP Pavillion a1129n ($7xx when I bought it, now about 12xx or 13xx): Athlon 64b 3400, 512ram (+1 gig), the Geforce 7900gt I dropped in, 200gig default HDD (+300gig secondary I dropped in) - is far better than any of the entry level Mac desktops (not the Mini) would compare to at the same price. And another thing - since I value hardware so much, you can probably see that I'm a gamer. So I'm actually happier with WinXP than I would be with OSX since just about every game I have or could want from over the past 8 years or so (hell, even the ones I run away from) require XP. How many apps and games are compatible with Mac compared to XP?

However, I gotta say, the only thing that has me thinking of switching to Mac is when I took a look at Vista about a month ago - theres no other way to describe it other than I hated pretty much everything about it (I'm sacrificing how much of my CPU or GPU for those half assed transparent windows??? The VW 1-litre car is a two-person concept car designed to travel 100 km using just 1 litre of fuel (equivalent to 235 miles per US gallon or 282 mpg Imperial). To achieve such economy, it is made from lightweight materials; the body is streamlined; and the engine and transmission are designed and tuned for economy.

For aerodynamics, the car seats two in tandem, rather than side-by-side. There are no rear view mirrors and it instead uses cameras and electronic displays. The rear wheels are close together to allow a streamlined body. The drag coefficient (Cd) is 0.16, compared to 0.30 for typical cars.
