  1. Can't wait to get open source phone... on Nokia Urges Linux Developers To Be Cool With DRM · · Score: 2, Informative
The last time I got a phone I got a Nokia phone, because it seemed a reasonable combination of price performance. But look what I have to put up with:
    • Can't crank up the volume. (Appearently because it may be bad for yoour hearing.) Instead I have to regain all my podcasts before putting them on the phone.
    • The illumination turns off after about 10s. No way to increase it. It doesn't matter if you are browsing or reading an ebook... Rumours have it that it is regulations regarding driving.
    • Can't replace the music playing software (it's only a System 40 phone) so I can't get something with bookmarks, or fast forward at speeds faster than x4 (which is no fun with a large podcast).
    • Ebook reading software in J2ME needs user confirmation for every disk access. You can't give a program permanent permission, unless it is "signed", which is a process that costs several hundred dollars.
I personally can't wait replacing the phone with something that is truly open, which does not mean putting up with arbitrary limitations. I guess it is time for Nokia to realize that the mobile world is going to change and be more like the desktop world.

I started using Opera on the OLPC as Opera is touted as the minimum resource GUI browser. There are still some scrolling issues and redrawing that is irritatingly slow. E.g. the mailbox overview frame of gmail.

  5. Re:GPL Violations on PlayStation 2 Game ICO Violates the GPL · · Score: 1
There actually are a couple of other ways that may be considered loopholes of the GPL, and these are:
    • Run the GPL code as a separate process, i.e. fork() and exec() the program with whatever parameters you want to pass it in the command line, and collect the output.
    • If you need more complex interaction, then wrap the GPL code within a server architecture, and communicate with this server from your program e.g. through tcp/ip. You still have to release your server code under GPL, but that might not be a problem. This is the loophole that the new license GPL variant (whose name I forgot at the moment) is trying to close.

  7. If you want to press four keys... on Five Finger Keyboards · · Score: 1

So the author does some combinatorics regarding how many ways to press the 5 keys. But there is no mentioning how to hold the mobile in the hand while you are operating it. If you assume that you will press the keys with your fingertops then the mobile will be supported by the same keys that you use for input. But this is quite problematic since it means that the fingers give support to one another. Suggest e.g. that you want to press the four key cord of all fingers except your thumb. If the keyboard press resistance of the thumb key is lower than the sum of the other fingers' resistance then you will be pressing the thumb key instead. Perhaps you can strap the mobile to your hand, or hold it with your other hand... But it doesn't seem very comfortable. I would suggest using an optical sensor at the side of the mobile that catches finger gestures instead...

Indeed, the technical quality of the slide show is really low.

I personally had a good laugh at the picture at:

    http://www.extremetech.com/slideshow_viewer/0,1205 ,l=&s=1670&a=209248&po=9,00.asp

which says "Motherboards are made from printed circuit boards (PCBs), which, as the name suggests, need to be printed or etched. Here's where that happens.", and an unknown machine is shown. No, that's not where the PCB's are made. The PCB construction is a very complex and accurate chemical process that involves laminates, copper foil, plotters, photo resist layers, etching, stripping, build up layers, optical inspection, repair, etc. That production is usually outsourced and the motherboard producer is then doing the final assembly step, which is partly depicted in the slide show.

  10. Unicode worries on ICANN Under Pressure Over Non-Latin Characters · · Score: 1

Using RTL (right-to-left) characters in DNS names is a bad idea. In a Unicode context, once you start using RTL characters in an environment that is not exclusively RTL you need to do bidirectional reordering converting from logical order to visual display order. This causes neutral characters like the dot character to jump to the left side of the word or the right side of the word depending on what character logically proceeds it. Sometimes the only way of forcing the display to look as you intended is to insert various zero width characters, like Right-Left-Mark, Right Left Mark etc. Another problem occurring e.g. in joined languages like indic languages and arabic languages is that you sometimes need to solve ambiguities by using other zero width characters like the ZWJ (Zero width joiner) and the ZWNJ (zero width non joiner). Is the proposal suggesting to allow these zero-width characters in DNS names as well? I certainly hope not... Though English is not my native language, I certainly hope that the current DNS subset will remain.

  13. Description of process is highly lacking on The Making of a Motherboard at ECS · · Score: 2, Informative
The description of the steps of the production of the PCB is highly lacking. Here is a list of technologies used in the production of a motherboard that are not even mentioned in the article:
    • Imaging: How the CAM patterns are transfered to the PCB. There are three different methods used in the industry:
      1. Plotter draws on film, conductor is coated with photoresist, pattern is copied from film to photoresist through UV light, photoresist is developed, washed, and the panel is etched.
      2. Direct imaging, which skips the step of using film and writes directly on a special photoresist. Precisition is much higher. Usually not used yet for computer motherboard, but only for high end mobiles.
      3. Build up. Instead of etching the material is deposited by electrolysis on top of the laminate.
    • Drilling. Used for interconnections between surface layers of the motherboard. Old method was mechanical. Today the market is using laser drilling almost exclusively.
    • AOI - Automatic Optical Inspection. Used at every stage of the production to find faults as soon as possible. It is much much cheaper to find a short on the bare PCB board, which can be repaired, then to find the same defect by a malfunctioning motherboard, which needs to be scrapped. Even the assambled boards are checked with AOI.
    • Different chemical processes used for the build-up process.

Using Dvorak with the keytops displaying the characters is really missing the whole point. The whole idea of touchtyping is that you should *NEVER* look at your fingers when you type. I've been using Dvorak for more than 20 years now, and I have never owned a "Dvorak keyboard". (It is actually a never ending source of pleasure at work, when the frustrated coworkers realize that they cannot type on your keyboard.)
