From TFA: How do I get my sysadmin to do anything?
Very simple. Cookies, brownies, pizza, etc. I've worked as a sysadmin, so I know all sysadmins like the ones with the little dark chocolate chunks in them.
From TFA:
He said they are intended to maintain scientists' neutrality. Since when are scientists supposed to be neutral? I thought scientists were supposed to gather and interpret data, which might not end up being neutral. Is neutrality really more important than good, honest science?
Yes, that's true if this were a closed system. However, this isn't a closed system. Energy is entering it (from the sun), and mass is entering and leaving (water, hydrogen and oxygen). So yes, total entropy is increasing somewhere, but it just isn't in this hypothetical system
Open Source Databases are only free if you don't value your time.
I dunno about that. A few years back we started running MySQL. Took a few hours to get set up and running, and it still needs to be maintained and upgraded, but systems like MySQL and PostgreSQL just seeem to run and run and run without any intervention... I've almost forgotten the root password because I never have to go in it.
Interesting concept... I would say that blocking is more effective than just warning users, but to tell you the truth, as a user I want to control what I have access too. I don't want a filter blocking things for me. A warning is nice, but I can take care of blocking on my own, thank you very much. Isn't this one of the annoying things about MS products - that they try to make up your mind for you?
Being a member of the first generation to grow up with the internet myself, I'll tell you that the greatest danger is pornography or MySpace predators. Rather, it is that computer/cellphones/iPods etc. can replace normal human social interaction and take the place of healthy habits. Don't restrict your kid's use of the internet, just make sure they have other options. Find a way for them to get excercise, make sure they join clubs at school and encourage them to [gasp] get together with friends that they haven't made over the internet.
Not to say that there wouldn't be drawbacks to this supposed "free energy", but I disagree that it could cause global warming. The earth's atmosphere has a certain temperatures that it naturally assumes based on factors such as sunlight, greenhouse gasses, groundcover etc. Therefore, any extra heat being produced would result in increased loss of heat from the earth due to radiation.
If someone could write a program that simulates 1000 virtual monkeys, all typing on typewriters, eventually they would end up with wikipedia. Or maybe they would end up with the equivalent of wikipedia very quickly.
It is nice to know that wiretaps have been useful in doing this, but the question has never been whether wiretaps should be used to counter terrorism. The issue is whether or not illegal wiretaps should be used!
Thats an interesting thought... After all, with the massive amounts of data that the NSA has been allegedly collecting, it is obvious that they would need some serious computing juice to process it. I'm not trying to come up with some sort of conspiracy theory, but from a technical standpoint, it makes sense.

You know it strikes me that probably 90% of the Internet audience these days would have no clue what ASCII is, much less how to telnet into the server.
On one hand, that's slightly sad
Actually, I remember the days when we didn't have telnet. We actually had to go to the game, and we were grateful for it!
When I first read the headline about "Worms" and "Bots", I thought someone had written a computer virus that somehow crawls into an unsuspecting computer user's digestive tract! Creepy, huh?
From TFPB: "Only torrent files are saved at the server. That means no copyrighted and/or illegal material are stored by us. It is therefore not possible to hold the people behind The Pirate Bay responsible for the material that is being spread using the tracker."
I'm no legal expert, so I dunno if this statement is legally feasable.

And even worse, why are they sneaking around looking at student's hard drives in the first place. What ever happened to privacy?
Imagine a beowulf cluster of those!
Yeah, something's wrong with their sense of time. They say it'll be released in 2007. What does that mean - 2009 or so?
Yes, I know. Please don't let science get in the way of a good joke.
Do you mean to say there is some uncertainty?
Have they tried rebooting it? Whenever I have a problem, I always just hit the restart button.
Back in my day we had Samba, and we were grateful for it!
Check your inbox, you've probably got some emails from people who would spend $50,000 on an exploit.

I usually just write to Ann Landers

And AMD recently promised the development of an 81 core processor...
Yeah, that's pretty cool, but there are no headphone jacks!
Oh, wait, I get it....

I don't agree with this guy. I mean, Slashdot seems to work OK.
