Why didn't the person who wanted to pay so much more money for the plane enter the eBay auction with his high bid? Then he'd have won, and there wouldn't have been a problem!
So why try to sell it outside of eBay, when you have the eBay auction running? That's just asking for trouble...
It already is an option in recent kernels to change to the completely fair scheduler. In fact, I'm using it right now, and it seems better at some things, and worse at other things, which is to be expected.
Hrm, you do make a point. It might be worth asking those companies advertising there if they have advertised on that site, but I've already described how the credit card logos link to fake or generic popup windows. Also, the BBB popup window is about 2CheckOut.com*, not about the site of the scammers themselves.
*) verified by another Slashdotter as genuine (which is of course no guarantee)
Yes, apparently they've learned the lesson of not promising too much for such a low price. This low-end machine is just about believable, if you compare it to other almost-available cheap laptops. Pretty clever, actually.
The Visa and Mastercard logos and popup windows are fake. I'm not sure I should post the details on how they are fake, because the scammers might be reading this too, and I don't want to explain to them the weaknesses of their website.
Unless they send me one of those laptops (1 gig please, kthx);-)
Total number of hits on our website since April 2007: 438 576

Of course, this doesn't make it true, the ads could be fake, and not paid for by those companies at all, just to make it look genuine. In fact, now that I look at it, all five ad images are hosted on the website itself, with simple URLs, not on some other site, or with a really long URL, like usual with ads.
You could control for that by running the same P2P program on an XP box and on the Vista box, and compare the results, IF the P2P program doesn't make the weird connections only when it detects it is running on Vista.
So he installed Vista, plus his warez, and now he's seeing suspicious network connections? Get a grip.
I'd like to see a bare install of Vista (legit), with no other programs running, and connection monitoring being done on a router in between the Vista box and the internet, before I will believe this. And I say this as a die-hard Linux user who has barely touched XP.
It appears that hotmail randomly deletes some incoming mail, but never if it's from another hotmail user.
That's to encourage people to migrate to Hotmail. It's a well-known Microsoft marketing strategy. Things just don't work right if you mix Microsoft software with other software.
I didn't say it isn't. I'm pissed that they won't patch my Windows 98SE that I (rarely) use for some games.
But Microsoft has a lot of versions of Windows out, and to provide patches for all of them would probably cost too much for them. They're just a little company with little cash, and just a few employees, you know...
I think if there hadn't been any computer viruses, that software companies wouldn't bother much with security. And then, there would be someone who would write a virus, and the damage would be much more severe.
Besides, right now, we actually have a choice between a secure and an insecure operating system. Why all those people choose the insecure system? Probably because they don't know any better, and the vendor claims that it is secure, which it obviously isn't.
Is there any reason whatsoever to EVENTUALLY "upgrade" from XP to Vista?
Maybe, when Microsoft stops patching XP altogether.
I don't necessarily see the need to continuously upgrading to new operating systems as time goes by.
Eventually you'll have to upgrade to a newer version, because eventually, they're going to stop providing security patches. This goes for all OS vendors. With Microsoft, you have the additional problem of them adding "features" that you won't like, such as DRM.
There are no significant changes for the home computer user with newer operating systems I feel.
I never regretted upgrading from Windows to Ubuntu, and I will upgrade to a newer version once they stop providing security patches for mine. Fortunately, they've announced for how long they will support it when they released it, so I know what to expect.
Lately, some Slashdotters have been posting about how they fear Google is going to know everything and abuse this knowledge. I noticed there has been a lot of this "Googlebashing" going on lately. I don't know whether it's just a few loudmouth posters, or a general feeling of unease among many posters, or just MS astroturfing.
So guns that have both legitimate uses (target practice) and illegal uses (murder) are allowed, yet modchips that have both legitimate uses (homebrew) and illegal uses (copyright infringement) are banned?
They don't need to use the GPL Linux driver source code. They can write their own fs driver.
Why do you think Windows doesn't support ext[23]fs out of the box?

I didn't want it to be too obvious.

Well, then you just burn a few more. Pretty soon, it'll add up to real money!

Maybe you should warn 2CheckOut that this seems like a scam.
Yeah, and the fake credit card security logos are just a measure to cut costs, honest!

Look at what the advertisers appear to pay:

This business smells.
Looks like they selected the cheapest parts -- 256 meg DDR SO-DIMM and 40 gig IDE drive, except for the CD/DVD combo drive.
Still, while I like the price of this thing, I don't trust them, I suspect it's a scam, and won't be buying until it's proven they're legit.

Actually, that's more dangerous, because lots of people are targetting vulnerabilities in the human brain.

And the worst thing is, he'll ally with most of the other AIs too! So he is a diplomatic genius, just not on your side ;-)
Probably a rogue trader.
You mean throw in a find /.
