Reminds me of an old David Spade bit where he tells of two girls he knew in high school that would argue over who watched less television; each trying to out-bohemian the other.
"Can't you people handle your own problems?....Do we have to police the entire town?" Seriously though...isn't the summary a little misleading? The man was not arrest because he 'refused to tweet' anymore than someone arrested for not pulling over was arrested for 'refusing to turn slightly to the right (or left depending on the country)'.
I will call 'protest too much' on that one. Feeling the need to inform someone they are missing your clever 'mistake', usually is indicative of a complete absence of wit.
Can you show me any non-wiki dictionary with that definition? Anywhere? To me it's sort of like folks that regularly use the word 'average' when they mean 'median'. I imagine that when enough people decide they are synonymous, it's will simply become a fact; or at least that's how most wikis seem to work.
Maybe it's the Aspergers that makes me obsess about things being technically correct, but begging a question if very different from raising a question. Just saying.
I've seen this happen. An engineer needed to get some files from his laptop to a Linux server. Since the server was not on the WAN he decided to use a USB drive, which was fine. Except that what he inserted was not a USB drive, but a USB wireless adaptor (he didn't know that). He spent over an house trying to get the 'drive' to work and then (for reasons unknown to me) left the adaptor in the server...maybe he forgot I don't know. It was there for over a week before anyone discovered it.
I am told by the security people that the adaptor defaulted to 'ad-hoc' mode and could have easily been paired with passerby outside in the parking lot who had the know-how (and presumably the right credentials).
No different that how, 30 years ago, it was 'good enough' to have nearly any race played by any actor who looked 'ethnic'. But now, the populace in general is more broadly educated (not to mention more instantaneously informed); and studio try harder to have a Korean play a Korean, a Arab play an Arab, and so on. I think the same thing is happening with music - as more folks grow to understand what really good recording can sound like, they begin to expected it and deride anything else.
Keeping a few connected computers off the larger WAN is easy enough. But as those computer grow in number it can become more difficult to prevent someone, somewhere from opening up ssh, ftp, rdp, or some other connection-type. Then the whole LAN becomes susceptible to the evils of WAN baddies.
And don't even get me started on the lack of physical security on 'secure' systems. If you can touch it, it's insecure.
So can I add this the list of possible humanity-ending catalysts and/or future Michael Crichton novel plotlines? I vote to call it "glow goo" or perhaps simply "bactoswarm".
I was thinking more about the 1910 appearance of Halley Comet. Very similar dire predictions, mass hysteria, and attempts by the scientific community to calm fears. I am sure all the previous appearances were the same too, but the 1910 showing was very well documented.
Seriously. What do we do when a RAM module or a backplane fails? Will a simple hardware swap become a task for those trained in hazmat handling? I do not want to be on the help desk when someone calls and says "Help! The servers are leaking!"
Can't we just start calling this a 'supercore' or something? When the numbers get that high it kind of goes beyond what most people can visualize. Like describing how hot the Sun is....let's just says it's "exactly 1 Sun hot".
Yeah..I bought my first house recently. It happened to be at the bottom of the lowest ebb of the US housing market ever. I got my place for over $100K less than it was worth just two years earlier. Just dumb luck on my part. I am not a genius, but I will admit I like to tell my friends that I totally planned it. Kind of like accidentally making that amazing shot in billiards and wanting everyone to think to did it on purpose.
I know what you mean. Seriously...I think Mr. Cuban expects most people to just pee on themselves to show submission as soon as he walks into a room. Look Mark, we are real sorry your Daddy didn't get you that pony when you were 8. Get over over it dude.
So they are using the old StarCraft and not the new upcoming StarCraft? I love the old StarCraft. I was really looking forward to the new one until they gutted it by removing LAN play. I would rather play the old version is all its 640x480 glory then play a LAN game over the WAN. Sure I have the bandwidth, but it's the principle. Won't someone think of the Zerglings?
In many places traffic cops are like Wikipedia admins. You get penalized if you behave in an unpopular manner; whether it's technically correct or not. So when everybody flies thru a school zone at 40mph, then it's okay! Right?

I wants to make it raiiiin on all you bitches, yo.
Me too. I have it auto-blocked. I don't need my visits being amalgamated by the Googbots thank you very much.

There should also be a comma after 'peeves'. Ah, I feel so much better.... ;0)

People who massively overstate and sensationalize their opinions are directly hurting US troops.

"You provide the pictures. I'll provide the war." Not sure who said that (Hearst?) but I think it was apocryphal anyway.
You never know.
I still hold out hope.
