I dont know what is with us americans that we fall for everything that has a little bit of cosmetics and a LOOOT of marketing behind it.

Dont get me wrong Apple makes excellent products and I love OS X but let it stay where it belongs to - on a nice desktop. But the article has a point - some people would give up anything (not the informed ones, but lets face it - there are some that arent)just for the IMPRESSION of a security and that there is a COMPANY/Vendor behind their home/office IT asset.

Everybody needs the help and people just dont feel confortable with the "go to the phorums, IRC channels, RTFA". They need to be able to call 1-800-MYPCBAD and the guy in india is supposed to fix the issue. ANd they dont even want to pay for it - because dell does it for free - if you are running windows, or apple for the MAC-s. On the other hand, people responsible for the server market seem to be just a bit more informed - they have to keep their jobs dont they? - so I think we have to wait a bit more for this to turn...

It might not be (just) about the government. If the government uses it and somebody finds out big deal - a couple talk show hosts, news for about 3 days and its forgoten. Totalitarian regimes are _far_ better in hiding that stuff from the people anyways. So they might not worry that much. Or if they worry is more likely because of international laws, so they dont get kicked in the butt for another reason. Individual companies, people - fuggedabouthit. If its illegal they'll kill you or lock you up with a daily 3 to 5 beating for the rest of your life. Hence the concerns.

Western governments end up in the news, and western individuals in the court for a little bit of handslapping. One might pay a fine and get away with it, or go to probation etc... Hence the ignorance for the legal stuff.

How large is a document? If you include pictures (a lot) it can get really large, but if you dont, even a whole book should not be more than a couple of megs... It would have been a problem in the era of 386 but these days?

The HDD is too slow to push it to the system, the memory is not large enough to hold it, or the CPU has problems doing conversations?

I think other than big chunk of fog/triangle and such GPU stuff, nothing is too slow anymore for the system. Of course rendering and calculations, finite element compulations take time, but thats a different story and certainly not the format of storing it is important.

Or maybe the document will be opened 1000 times in sec for a large office :))) - In this case think about a Database engine

There is a drawing - the cloaking device like a cherry and the object to be cloaked like the pit of a chetty. The light travels around the pit, but what hapens to the outer device? Is it made of glass or transparent material?

A computer literate person should know how theese work together under the command of an OS, have a basic idea about what an operating system is and what is the different betwean an OS and an Application

IMHO if one knows these will be able to use basic applications (including MS Office if that is what he/she desires) and call him/herself computer literate.

Understanding that a car has engine, wheel, steering wheel, transmission is necessary to drive a car. Knowing the same basic things about a computer is the same.

Than if they are programmers, network admins, webmasters - they are not computer literate's any more. They are specialized pretty much like car mechanics...

An executive, administrative person etc. is computer literate if he/she knows this - otherwise they are trained monkeys^H^H^H^H^H^H^H users, and are afraid to do anything that wasn't in the training - in consequence they will be unable to use other programs that they are trained in.

  9. Avast on Best of the Free Anti-virus Choices? · · Score: 1

I used avast and AVG with different results. Lately though I found that AVG is missing some infections so my main Avtivir is AVAST now. I found that often when when I check PC-s that were running McAffee or Norton AV after uninstalling those and doing an AVAST scan I can pick up one-two viruses almost all the time.

Also Avast has a basic malvare/spyware protection too and shields for p2p networks and IM protocols. I would suggest AVAST since it even does automatic updates, the user doent even have to move a finger. The lack of scheduled scans its not so important since the program constantly scans the drive while the PC is idle.

Heck maybe even buy some Linux for sysadmins books.

Emails stored on desktops?Bahh..Unable to recover deleted stuff? Looks like the backup routine wasnt designed properly either. Microsoft solutions might work for them because they had a couple experienced MS consultants do a thinking for them. How about hiring some Linux brains for consulting?

Bottom line: IMHO especially in the radio stations case the problem was lasy management and if I'd be in this guys shoe I wouldnt be so proud of myself. This is true in the other direction too. Dont be proud of yourself if you cant desing and implement something. Put some thinking in the process or put out some $ for somebody else to do it for you.

Taking in consideration the popularity of Ubuntu and a few other distros I think more that 80% of Linux Desktops out there are running either Gnome or KDE. A couple XFCE and the rest I think is little over the percentage of geeks running alternate windows shells (ex:blackbox).

These two are pretty consistent and you can run a KDE app over Gnome and Vice versa if you have the libs installed. It might look a bit different, but if somebody cant live with that little of inconsistency shouldnt be let near a computer anywhere. Not like the windows programs are so-so much consistent in their looks.

Pretty much the softwares for these two are much more consistent IMHO than the apps for Win.Apple is a different storry, but I dont think incostitency is the most important problem Linux have to tackle to gain popularity on desktops.

I am not an economist but I dont think the power that drives the economy are companies making HUGE money out of overpriced software products. I dont mind paying for a software if its a good tool and is reasonably priced - I think intelectual effort should be rewarded but not overpaid.

So for this reason I understand if MS would ask money for its software, but it isn't good if its overpriced, and the income is used to gain monopoly on markets. In my opinion a similar driving force could be a good support contract. In a long term I think it would be better for everybody - for the people for sure - if MS would put more effort to add a little more bang for the buck... How about better support, better security?

And what if the masses would actually have REAL acces for the things they bought? When you buy a car you can look under the hood and its all yours, you can even tinker with it, but if it breaks you take it to a repair shop. With this analogy the dealers and specialized shops profit just as the Average Joe Garage. Its up to you where you take the car and Average Joes family is also happy. How about this driving force to the economy?

And so we all would have options and wouldnt be forced to use certain products just to send a document. Good ideas survive and eventually might become industry standards - because they are GOOD ideas - NOT because theres tons on money behing them and might not be such good ideas afterall.... And the economy is thriving :)
