  2. Basic flaw in your argument on Hydrogen Won't Save Our Economy · · Score: 1

I think you missed the point right there.
The article says "In the market place, hydrogen would have to compete with its own source of energy," to which you reply:
"Why do we have to use electricity from the grid to generate hydrogen? Why can't we use floating arrays of photovoltaic cells to crack the water on the ocean? Or we could use large banks of mirrors to power an array of Stirling engines to generate the power to crack the water? It's not as if you need a large voltage to do the job, I think there are many ways of getting the power other than off the grid."

The point here is that the energy generated by those photovoltaic cells or stirling engines could be better put to use on the grid rather than using it to create hydrogen (which loses some of the energy you managed to capture in the process). Sure, they don't have to go on the grid, but if they did you'd get much more of the energy they create for general use. It just doesn't make sense to piss away a good portion of your produced energy just so you can have a fancy and inefficient carrier.

Maybe they'll pass the info they glean from this off to high schools, since they seem so interested in digging through every detail of their students' personal lives looking for anything incriminating. If we teach the children to live in a police state it will seem normal to them when they grow up and there will be no complaints!

Remember when the force of gravity was a constant?

Well for simple calculations about things on the earth's surface it still is, but as soon as you widen your perspective a little bit you have to start reworking where that number comes from. I don't see how this is much different than that. They look a little further and realize another 'constant' can also vary based on some principle they will hopefully figure out later with more observation.

  15. "American Competitiveness Initiative" is a sham on The President, The State of the Union, and Genetics · · Score: 1
It's yet another corporate giveaway with little more than lipservice given to the education side of things. Take this article for example:
Bush proposes to spend $5.9 billion in fiscal 2007 on a plan the White House has dubbed the "American Competitiveness Initiative." Two-thirds of the money - $4.6 billion - would be used to pay for tax credits U.S. companies get for investing in research and development projects. All of Bush's past budget submissions have included a proposal to make this tax credit permanent.
And how much will go to education programs for math & science?
Another key component of Bush's competitiveness initiative proposes spending $380 million in fiscal 2007 to provide more rigorous math and science instruction in high schools [...]
So basically he's giving backdoor tax cuts and spending a pittance on education, as usual.
