You stated that your dad was paid to "defend people, whether what they did was right or wrong", and that "Not all lawyers are evil." So was it not evil when your father successfully defended a guilty person and they were set free? Society suffers because a criminal is let loose by the ability of your father to convince some people that the criminal did not commit the crime when he did. Wonderful.
Yes, but the religion haters on Slashdot will do everything they can equate your church with CoS because so many of them are angry at Christianity and willfully ignore all of the contributions Christianity brings to society. I'm in the same boat as you, although I'm not Mormon, I'm Catholic which is another favorite target of Slashdotters.
As someone who is extremely colorblind, I have two different types, I have a tendency to stay away from games that rely on color. You are right, it is like seeing the world differently I suppose, because I have absolutely no idea what the world would look like otherwise. I imagine the world is much more bland to me than to other people.
Anybody who would say this has obviously not been around the world. I don't need to justify wanting clean air by saying that America is the worst country in the world.
How the hell am I modded a troll? Grishnak mentions a particular scenario of a guy inheriting a $500k house and asks why should the guy have to lose the house because even though the house was free to him, the taxes on it are more than he can afford. I merely stated the fact that there are quite a few people in the US who believe that inheritance should be abolished. Whoever modded me down must not want people to realize this. It must have been the fact that I mentioned that Karl Marx was greatly in favor of abolishing inheritance.
Because a lot of these people crying out for these types of taxes do not believe your child should be allowed to benefit from what you worked for your entire life. Most of these people are students of Karl Marx and they want to abolish ALL inheritance in the name of "fairness". Anytime I hear somebody use the term "genetic lottery" it just makes me ill.
I'm a blonde haired, blue eyed, white guy and I have personally been taken out of line for a random search when there was plenty of Arabic and browned skinned people in line.
I must have grown up in a small isolated pocket of America, because I had absolutely no idea that most Americans, and including the government, were all racists bigots who want to target every brown person and make them suffer indignities.
Opensource, at least on the desktop, is NEVER going to take off. People are WAY too addicted to MS Office. People can argue with me, but it is just the culture of government employees.
I've been working 60+ hour weeks consistently for 13 years with a spike of 75+ hour weeks for a two year period, maintained a decent life with a wife and two kids, and you know what? I've been taking online courses for YEARS.
Go ahead work long hours because you have to, but don't become a vegetable because you DON'T have to. Don't let your job ruin your life man. There's always time for what you make of it.
What about retro gaming? If in 20 years you start feeling nostalgic, want to play the game you loved from now you just won't be able to. You would have to find someone with a used console that already has the game tied to it. No longer will you be able to find classic consoles on ebay and used retro games on Amazon.
My son NEVER buys new games. Hell, he can't afford them with the meager amount of money he gets from doing various chores. Also, if there are no used games, then when your console hits end of life you can no longer play it, just the games that you bought with it originally.
IMO at some point, conveniences become widespread enough that we start to rely on them, and the providers of that service can then exact control over us by restricting or controlling this service, which previous to our reliance might not have mattered so much.
WOW. What a sinister plan you have there. We can give over control to somebody, and then when they exert that control we can enlist other people to help us control THEM. So by giving up control of our lives we are really gaining control over somebody else?
I like your style. I will choose to live in a city where I can't dig my own well, have somebody else pay the costs of running pipes to my house, then go to the pump plant, get in the way of their business and stop others from using their products. Then when they shut off my service I'll really flip a lid! All because I've become so accustomed to the convenience of it all that it is now my RIGHT to have it!
I have never understood all of the craziness and paranoia surrounding "identity theft/fraud". As far as I'm concerned it is just bank fraud. A bank was tricked into thinking somebody was somebody else. If somebody takes a bunch of loans out in my name, I'll just refuse to pay. They have to PROVE IT WAS ME who got those loans.
I know a cave man looking guy who is about the farthest thing away from being a "pussy" who seems to think that only humans are bastards enough to deserve being killed.
I just love how all vegetarians get lumped together as some whack jobs who feel so bad for the wee little animals. Just yesterday a clerk at the Walmart made a remark to my wife about how "God intended for us to eat animals." Like he was judging her when it was him who asked about the lack of meat in the grocery cart. Who the hell knows what God wants? Obviously the 300 lb man who can't even stand up to swipe some groceries knows exactly what God wants us to eat.
Personally I would never eat this lab grown meat. I'll continue to be fit and live a perfectly healthy life without any meat.
This is definitely good news for me. My wife and I play a very active role in educating our children. So while all of those children whose parents just dumped them off at school are getting a horrible education, my children will be surpassing them. For instance, my son in Kindergarten can read above a third grade level here in Georgia while the MAJORITY of the children in his class can barely read at all. It pisses me off too when the teachers act like my children were just born smart and that I am lying when I tell them that we study TOGETHER atleast an hour a night beyond what the school has been teaching them.
My children understand evolution and who Darwin was. My 9 year old daughter knows basic algebra and American history. I plan on teaching her beginning programming concepts this summer as well as more advanced writing techniques.
I manage to do all this while working a 60-80 work week. I'm not saying I'm some kind of super parent, quite the opposite. I'm saying that if I can manage to raise intelligent, well rounded, and physically fit children, then anybody can. You just have to prioritize your life and realize that what REALLY matters is your children.
Sure, I have no real hobbies. I don't play video games or watch sports. I spend almost ALL of my free time taking care of those children and continuing my education by taking distance learning college courses. If a parent isn't willing to sacrifice their time, then they shouldn't have had children.
So I say go ahead and let the teachers avoid teaching fundamental science, I'll teach it my damn self and MY children will have an advantage over all of those children whose parents can't give a damn.

Sure tablets might cannibalize the home PC market, but I can't imagine the business market giving way to tablets anytime soon. I will use a tablet at work the day when I can use MS Office (or an alternative with 100% compatibility), Lotus Forms, and am able to digitally sign a document with a CAC.
If the fine for speeding was $200 and a wealthy individual was pulled over and fined, all he would have to do is pay the $200. That's $200 the local government has to use for programs such as assistance for the poor. Now, if the punishment was community service, that would HURT the local government and assistance programs. It would also HURT the economy as the loss of that person's productivity, not being able to manage their company during that time, not being able to invest in stocks, etc. I'm sorry, but until the system is completely overhauled, the wealthy are the only ones who provide jobs.
One of the people who work for me has an injured leg, and last time he was at the doctor they asked him about his mental state because of the pain. He walked out of the doctor's office with a diagnosis for depression and some prescription meds.
I buy plenty of music from independent artists through iTunes, and have done so for quite a few years now.

Who does it belong to?
Anybody who would say this has obviously not been around the world. I don't need to justify wanting clean air by saying that America is the worst country in the world.
This was completely thought out and written about in Heinlein's The moon is a harsh mistress in 1966.
