  1. Re:China Ain't Too Bright on Foreign Hackers Attack Canadian Government · · Score: 4, Informative

Which part of the country do you live in? In general it seems you're correct. However it's worth mentioning that out here in the frozen prairies much of the current economic strength, especially in Saskatchewan, has been coming from potash. You can't hear a discussion about potash and not hear China mentioned at least once, China is a huge buyer of the potash produced here. The price of potash has gone up significantly in recent years and they rely on it. Having China refuse to buy potash might not hurt people out in the east, but in the prairies we certainly would be impacted by it.

I have to second this post, privacy, free expression and rights are good here in Saskatchewan (Canada). But you had better be prepared to deal with the long -20 C to -40 C winter and the slow switch to +30 C to +40 C summer. Only a million people live in this province. I wonder why.. that said, if you don't mind the weather it's a good place to live. :)

  3. Re:As a female IT Director... on Coping Strategies for Women in IT · · Score: 1

Mod parent up, as a young CS summer student in an IT department (at a mine no less, oh the irony), your comment agrees perfectly with what I'm already seeing in my day to day experiences. Because I love it, I intend to stay. My male coworkers do plenty of swearing, joking around and dealing with angry people. I admit this work environment was somewhat intimidating when I started. But I stuck with it and now I enjoy it. Many of my fellow female friends and students would never want to work in the same environment, nor would I expect them to. Nor would I want to work in many of the jobs they are perfectly happy with. It's about personal preference, not convincing more women to move into into IT just because someone feels there is not enough. I haven't seen any campaigns to convince more men to move into female dominated professions recently either. What's so special about CS/IT? I agree that it's about alignment, if IT is the place you want to be then stay. If it isn't, then just keep looking until you do find what it is that you enjoy.

  4. Re:This is a good thing! on Women Are Fleeing IT Jobs · · Score: 1
I mean, this is the sort of thing that would be flat out obvious to a male developer.

Is that the case, or does it have something to do with that male programmer's previous experience? Are some of these places hiring women just to fill female gap with little regard to the amount of experience that person should have resulting in these types of situations? How many mistakes do your male developers make? It may be easy for you to sweep those examples of poor programming under a rug, but when a female programmer makes a mistake.. well they shouldn't even have a job anymore. After reading these types of comments on Slashdot I'd question why a women would want to enter IT when this type of attitude has already been set against her from the very beginning.

Just want to add, we also spent some time looking to find a Wii today, and the general feel was come back in April. Multiple stores told me they would not have stock until April. After everything I've heard recently, this would actually make sense.

If that person is in the state that they require CPR and their heart has failed then they are probably not breathing. You might want to consider reading the article again because it's pointing out that if one has to give CPR to a person with heart failure, it will be more effective if they concentrate on doing the chest compressions rather then also having to get air to person at the same time. (This makes sense after all.)
