My (IT illertate) Boss, asked me one day "what is the best format to rip my CD's into?". I answered "if you want freedom and good quality use OGG Vorbis, but seeing as you and your family already have various players that support mp3, use mp3 but turn off 'protection' and set it to a high bit-rate"
Do you know what he did... burned it all to WMV.
So yeah, there are a few out there that use.WMV... but if they are anything like my boss, they are idiots.
Yeah, I have a similar setup but without the IR Blaster. I manage OK. The biggest limitation is not being able to record one channel and watch another... but they replay crap so over-and-over that I just set it to record it at 1am or whatever.
I have to set the DVR (mythtv) to record the show and also set the Set-Top-Box to 'auto-tune'. But it works out as I record the same shows every week. (auto-tune set to always switch to 'The Daily Show', Family Guy etc, and the mythtv always to record that show at that time).
It is 'slightly' cumbersome, but no worse than a VCR! Plus Mythtv has ad detection and skips them entirely.
Toss in an automatic Term Paper writer extension, and I'm in!
But seriously, Is there a plugin similar to the 'APA referencing Macro' for MSOffice? (allows autoformatting and reference placement of references, in the correct APA format for all the types of sources - web/book/journal/speech/tv, with correct punctuation italic etc...
It was always my crappy formating of the referencing that got me caught out until i started using 'APA refrencin Macro'...
Also, if anyone knows of a free alternative (apart from learning them), I'd be interested.
Well, vinyl doesn't have DRM, and I don't see how it could possibly.
Vinyl IS DRM. Its a pain in the arse to rip, it'll only rip at 1x speed, you cannot get the computer to automatically fill in the meta data... and the act of ripping it actually degrades the quality of the audio! (unless you have a laser record player).
This makes me think the record companies are behind this promotion of vinyl!
of course, someone has to look at the pictures first to determine if it is, infact, child pornography...which by default would make them guilty.
I travel a bit, and have all my regular photos on my PC at home as well as a few family photos on my work PC. Ocassionally someone in the family has a new kid or whatever and you always get the obligitory photos and ocassionally photos of the first bath etc. I am absolutely petrified to have those photos on my computer - so I delete them. Reason: Should some TSA agent decide to search my laptop and *think* that a kid in a bubble bath photo which was sent to me by a family member or close family friend is kiddie porn. - it would take too long to resolve, and would be far too difficult. I'd probably be arrested and there'd be something on the file -
All that UNTIL AN EXPERT says "oh, wtf, this is just some kid having a bath sent to him by a family member"... too late. The damage would be done.
I switched my 800MHz Compaq Armada 110s to Ubuntu to purge it of the evil Windows Me long before they stopped 'supporting it'. (in my mind they stopped supporting the customer the day they released it)
The switch from Win 95/98/Me to Ubuntu is easy...and free... you should try it.
Hezbollah are not military and are essentially made up of a bunch of thugs.
I give you:
Hezbollah is not a small guerrilla organization. It is a trained, skilled, well-organized, highly motivated infantry that is equipped with the cream of the crop of modern weaponry from the arsenals of Syria, Iran, Russia and China, and which is very familiar with the territory on which it is fighting. Hezbollah military is considered to be the most capable non-state armed group in the Middle East. Jane's Information Group:
"Islamic Resistance guerrillas are reckoned to be amongst the most dedicated, motivated and highly trained of their kind. Any Hezbollah member receiving military training is likely to do so at the hands of IRGC [the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps], either in southern Lebanon or in camps in Iran. The increasingly sophisticated methods used by IRGC members indicates that they are trained using Israeli and US military manuals; the emphasis of this training is on the tactics of attrition, mobility, intelligence gathering and night-time manoeuvres.(REF)
and
Hezbollah's strength was enhanced by the dispatching of one thousand to fifteen hundred members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and the financial backing of Iran.
Thugs indeed. - highly trained, skilled, well funded clever thugs...
but basically has said that they are doing a totally new communication system where everything, from the individual soldier on up, is linked and shares all information. It's an almost videogame level of information availability.
Network Centric Operations are all the rage... which goes along with what you said above. What happends when a patrol is intercepted and the enemy get their hands on your PDA/Radio. Can they then see all your movements and listen to your comms until the key is changed? (24Hrs?) Could this give the enemy FULL access to all your information for a short period of time allowing them to plan future capture operations? All I'm sayin is you cant beat a bit of compartmentalisation now and again.....
Nobody has implemented tiered service yet. Nobody has targeted packets to slow them down yet.
I have a current problem with my ISP where my ping goes up sky high when I'm most likely to be gaming (Friday evening's, Sat and Sunday arvo etc). If I phone them and complain and they set up a tech visit for about 10 days time. I usually phone back after 7 days of no problems and cancel the tech, then about a week later it starts up again. Sure I might game for 5 or more hrs at a time, then the ping goes from 30ms to over 600ms (which gets me kicked). This is my in-game ping (BF:2) to local servers, and also I then check with a manual ping to different servers - including my ISPs domain - from my computer and other computers in the house - all with the same results. It is also noticeable on web based 'speed tests' where it takes ages to get 'up to speed', and sometimes the speed is slightly lower the latency that is really poor.
While this isn't a NN issue per-se, it appears that my ISP is playing with my service slowing it down when it suits them (and inconveniences me). It might just be tinfoil hat stuff, but its been too regular. I've been meaning to set up a script to ping various servers over time, and map the trends. (I'm a scrip noob, any help appreciated).
So while I appear to have a 'neutral internet' (across services), I do appear to have interference when I've been gaming for 'too long'. I'm not being switched from the motor-way to a toll-way, they just regulate the number of cars I can use on the existing motorway.
There are bottlenecks enough in the net without artificially constricting flows to give your own services an advantage
I remember someone reporting that a team of pro-NN programmers were working on a FireFox plug-in that 'polled' various servers on the net with different protocols, to give the user the ability to see if his internet was 'biased'. I haven't seen or heard of it since..... Anyone??
Perhaps the Tel-cos are so hell-bent on getting more money out of their existing infrastructure that they are willing to 'silence' people - mob style.
Further to my last post, have you considered using Ubuntu on your family machine and running your essential Windows aps in a Windows OS under VMWare? This provides all the security of the Linux machine (host), with a VM running Windows.
VMWare gives you the option to not save across sessions, this ensures any changes made are lost. (You can save across sessions if you want to, but for security you may chose otherwise). It ensures each and every time your family use the machine, it is stable, virus free and repeatable... and should reduce instances of it 'acting stupid' as your family put it.
VMWare performance is pretty good. Its 'very close' in performance to running the OS natively. I've been running Ubuntu and FreeBSD, and a couple of other obscure OS's on my Windows machine and can vouch that its pretty damn good. I've run the Ubuntu within Ubuntu just for kicks, and its performance is great.
You can try the free VMware player here. You can try the free browser appliances to get the feel for what it offers. I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say, if you try it out.
[Ubuntu is] Not always an option, if you want to keep your wife and kids happy..... I've got Wine set up on my Linux server with AIM and IE. Windows box has the appropriate icons linked to a Cygwin script that launches a local X server rootless (if it isn't already running), then remotely executes AIM or IE from my server.
I'm not sure why you went to all that trouble... I just switched our family computer to Ubuntu and loaded chat tools etc. They are fine with it as the icons are there for all the tools they use, and it suits everybody just fine! I just check it once-in-a-while to see if it needs updates, and that is the limit of my involvment/support! Since i've swiched over to Ubuntu I've had more time for BF:2, and less time fixing the bloody computer.
This worm spreads by getting users to run a.com file which is disquised as a.jpg.
I was surfing pr0n^H^H^H^H^H the Internet the other night and mining some sites... I saw very clever(?) URL's on a couple of websites... they were along the line of:
Only if you use the "Magnum Research.50 Desert Eagle featuring a gas-operated rotating bolt, a 7 round box magizine, and the optional Combat sight with Patented Windage_Drift_Compensator. And if you chose to 'use it now' a real one will be shipped to you for the very low price of 5 easy payments of $199.99. So click now, start shooting and if you shoot someone in the next five minutes, you'll recieve this home Gym set absolutely free!.

It will. It just takes forever.

Yeah, its these kids that kick my arse. Pisses me off. I'd like to quit and just game all day. - i'm sure my wife wouldnt let that happen tho'...
I'm 32 and game about four hours on friday nights, then 4 hrs on Saturday and 4 on Sunday arvo, but then I have no life either.. and no kids -yet....
