    They used to offer a CD that they would MAIL you for free (around 2002) but stopped doing that. (no reason was given for why they stopped).

    So because the *nix world can quantify their applications they must have more?

    The vast majority of Windows applications are not centralized anywhere, so counting them would be impossible. But if you'd like an example go and try to find an audio encoder for windows, now do the same for a Linux environment.

    Big Difference.

    You give the majority of developers WAY to much credit.

    Most developers cannot develop programs quickly from the command line. Without this ability programming on Unix like systems is extremely time consuming and frustrating.

    So which system are they going to develop on? The one they can rapidly develop a program with using a GUI IDE or the one where it is going to take them much longer (due to their lack of a necessary skill)?

    You decide.

    The one thing that Microsoft does extremely well is document and provide tools to develop software for windows.(free tools such as visual c# express offer non-commercial developers a cheap IDE). It's why there is a much larger number of applications written for windows than for Unix like systems.

    By applying the same principles to the Xbox 360 they might just find that more people use the system because of what they can do with it, not because of the numbers.

    The applications make the system useful, not the other way around.

    Actually I already knew how long the study had been taking place. They are attempting to catalog all the life in the oceans when we haven't even cataloged all life in the rain forests, which is a far smaller task. Now when you consider that the surface area (not volume) of the ocean is 75% of the earth, the chances of encountering every creature in the ocean seems ridiculously small, much less the chance that every creature is encountered and properly documented in all of 9 years. The jokes on you.

    The types of attacks that are being carried out are not single target attacks, they are broad attacks used to secure large botnets or to retrieve sensitive information on smaller targets.

    The major breach of security events where large amounts of personal information is either pure dumb luck (enhanced by a larger drag net or malware) or the combination of social engineering, physical break in, and computer based attacks.

    China graduates more engineers, mathematicians and scientists every year than the U.S.


    Their population is 4 times that of the US and anyways who wants to be an engineer if you can be an 'artist' and still live pretty well.

    Will it go smoothly, soon, or be diligent in giving foreign patent holders the same rights as Chinese patent holders? I doubt it.


    Foreigners will never have meaningful rights in China.

    The reality of the situation however is that the trade imbalance is offset by government bonds sold to asian countries.

    Are we ever going to pay them back?

    I absolutely agree with you.

    Engineers often forget that the main purpose of innovation in the international and (almost all) domestic markets is simply to make money.

    Money drives everything. For example without money your teleporter is useless as none will be built.

    Even non-profits need to design products that can make money, either through direct sales or products worthy of donations.

    Frankly an engineer that can design a perfect bridge but can't get it built is worse than one who can design a flawed bridge but can get it built.

    My 2 cents.

    Modern phones all have a GPS unit in them, it aids 911 in locating people. Unfortunately there is currently no law which governs the use of that GPS data.

    They already can track you, the only thing different now is that you can track you.

    There is already a massive number of 32 bit drivers written for XP which will continue to work in Vista, which is why it is only the 64 bit drivers which must be signed.

    Actually the court orders that the RIAA is being granted are for the data on the hard drives and for the physical hard drives as well.
    As such if you do not supply them with the password for the hard drive encryption you will be in contempt of court, which is FAR worst than losing to the RIAA, oh AND the RIAA will be granted summary judgement in their favor.

    So really this doesn't mean anything unless there is Plausable Deniability that there is any data on the drive at all, or something such as a Hidden Volume (True Crypt Hidden Volume)

    All drivers in 64 bit Vista will be signed by Microsoft (yes this does give them the exclusive right to choose hardware that will or will not work with Vista).

    The only way to run kernel code is drivers, 32 bit drivers are currently only sometimes signed. ALL 64 bit drivers must be signed, or they won't be loaded. This is why there is a distinction between 32 bit and 64 bit Vista.
