  1. Sun does it... on Microsoft Patents Package Management · · Score: 1

There is a tool/script for Solaris to install
patches that works in this exact way.
It checks your systems patch list saved in their
style of database against the one on the internet
and offers you new/updated patches etc. in
    special packaged format.
I know of some other systems working this same
way. This patent will proably be granted due to
complete idiocty in patent office but it will
most definitely not be enforceable due to vast
    amounts of prior art.

Now thats a great use of american legal system. For the first time in history 335000 people will be sued by a couple of idiots. Well, some court clerk will be unhappy - writing 335000 summonses and all. I wonder if it's ok to overhear some of Metallica music while walking by someones window or something. They should really have an address to remit a quarter every time this happens to you. Would btw be nice if they woul dhave to serve their own warrants door to door: "Hi, we are metallica and we are here to serve you with a court warrant".Or may be thats how they figured they can assemble 335000 fans in one place - mandatory concert?:))) I'd personally prefer "KISS" just cuz they would look so much cooler knocking at a door of some sleepy suburb.

Well..the story is russian.. i am not sure what

a common beleief of biology scolars out there
that (wild) pigs thrive on acorns..the hell
    i know why:)

  10. Interactive BS on Oscar and Interactivity · · Score: 2

Ok, so let's try to use logic for a change. It may
    surprise you..:)

    a) From whatis.com: Interactivity - In computers,
interactivity is the sensory dialog that occurs
between a human being (or possibly another live
    creature) and a computer program.
So i gather from this that interactivity elsewhere
would be a form of a feedback from the person to
a medium whatever it may be. Interesting..Once
the big word is out - we are getting somwhere.

    b) Now feedback is a novel idea. I always though
thats what the "Reader Letters" in newspapers,
"Public Opinion Polls" in politics and viewers
paying for movie tickets have been. But hey, thats
    just a simple ol' me...

    c) How "showing the guts of a process" is related
to being "interactive "beats me. I am also not
sure what is e-commerce and B2B. Anyone here
    knows?

    d) Keeping to original meaning of "interactive"
(see "feedback") i woul like to note that too much
of it is clearly not good. Doesn't FOX feed us
    with enough reality/behind-the-scenes drizzle
already? "The animals attack/cops/who wants to
shtoop a rich guy/direct from the bathroom" shows
seem to be all over. They are clearly a result
of TV directly responding to demands of viewing
public. The public *is* in the giant experiment.
It has been put in a cage, given a big red
button to push. Every time they do - they get
a bigger doze of self-gratification. The lab
monkey that we are is happy to pound on this
button with all the might and with every push
TV/media spurts yet another chunk of what we
    want most.

    e) A story goes that one painter asked an opinion
of his friends on his new work. His friends all
being animals they replied (feedback, interactive)
that things they like most were missing (bear-honey)
    (pig-acorns)(monkey-bananas) and so he included
all their requests. Once he did they all agreed
that a new picture is just crap. Think
what you want but any kind of media be that
TV or writing or otherwise is (or better be)
an art. Art is a production of *one* persons
mind and soul presented to us after hard work
for our possible enjoyment. It is the fact that
that person thought it all *by himself* without
any help from us and the fact that he put all
his work to make this art easy to see/read/understand
without us knowing all the work behind the scenes
    that makes it so valuable.
Also remember that the "web" - most interactive
media we have now is filled with porn and
small-time money making schemes. This is what
we peoples demand and it gives us the full
measure. G-d save us if other mediums go the
    same way.

f..) Jon Katz. Please find someone who doesn't
just pick a big word from an "internet lingo
for dummies" and writes a whole book around
    it on a random topic.

  11. Reasons... on The Internet is America-centric, But for How Long · · Score: 4

    a) The main reason much of the world speaks english as a second and often first language is
the fact that until some 50 years ago British
Empire owned a multitude of colonies everywhere
and therefore English was their offical language
for quite a while. At the same time them brits
being so important to world trade - their language
also became a common trade language. Aided by the
fact that english is very concise/precise as
opposed to many others - it is and will stay a
universal standard. But Americans got their
    language domination ready made.

    b) As to whitehouse issue, Russian parlament
is "belyi dom" which can be translated as a
whitehouse, but so can it be translated into
"bait lavan" , "casa blanka" :) and btw i like
the latter most..:) As long as domain name
systems exists as it is (primitive single language
mapping of names into addresses) nothing can
solve real problems in it and changing suffixes
won't help either. What will help is a global
directory system where things are found as
per multiple names and attributes. That will also
help stop childish games of "whos the real Joe".

    c) Internet as of now is divided in little
national nets with their own rules and lifes.
Russian net is vastly separate both connectionwise
and in terms of society from US which in terms
separate from European (and more subdivided into
    other countries) and so on.
Their "e-commerce" (damn the word) is different
too with each country having their own products,
own companies on the web, own payments etc.
Just like you are not likely to order pizza from
Japan by phone being in New York, there is no
reason to do that just because you can access
pizza-hut.jp. I am sure you can call them too...
The internet is yet another tool that allows some
collaboration among countries and cultures but not
more then those cultures would *like* to
    collaborate.
    d) Cultures do not like to collaborate. Show me
one nation/country that *likes* any other
nation/country? Likes as in "those nice/good
    bulgarians/indians/samoas/whatever" as opposed to
"damn ...".. Just look at the variety
of directly hateful US posts for details. People
(in order to protect themselves) have to belong
to some "society/group" etc and the easiest/most
natural way to belong and differentiate from
others is hate. It is basic reaction that
evolution gave us for our own good.
Internet is not about to change that...

With this, i wish you all good luck and if you
succeed in making world a better place i will
    come and visit.

  14. Why? on FCC Wading Into Digital TV Quagmire · · Score: 1

    a) Things have to be let to develop "naturally"
In case of digital TV - higher picture quality
is not a holy grail - why would you want to
see in better quality whatever they show on tv
    now??
    b) The time has to be given for communication
industry to allow a merge of technolgies so that
tv and web would be one. Then (when the difference
betwin the website and tv channel will be
erased) and the whole thing will be fully
interactive there will be another standrad or
group thereof by themself. Forcing anything else
now will just slow this proces.
    c) In the meantime making people shell out over
3000$ to watch more brainwash and hogwsh on more
channels in more color is good for anyone BUT
us people in front of the tv.
