Let me be among the first to thank Timothy for the links. If possible, could somene point to a source on engineering that would explain if/how it is possible for a building to collapse from the top down, as the towers did?
Free publicity is the way things work. Either you pay big bucks, or you do something to make people hear about you. Microsoft (while it was a known company) could quite possibly have broken laws intentionally.
"Hey Billy, you wanna make some money?" asked the gangster. "No, my computer makes me money." Says Billy. "Your computer will make me money if you don't work with me." "Ahh, just don't take my computer.",br> "No, you can keep it, and I will give you money to start a company, but when you make it big, your gonna do things my way," said the gangster. Microsoft founded. Years later "Hey Billy, remember me?" "Uh Oh" "You owe me ten percent, so raise your prices, and then I want you to bump off some competition." The gangster whips out a Tommy Gun. "Here, use this." "We don't use those anymore, we use "unfair market practices" and "monopolies." Justice Department is founded.
I used to spend a lot of time on mp3.com looking for good stuff, even ordered a few cds. Back in the day when I actually shared files by default, before I realized that a 56k modem was not meant for this, I noticed that about half of the stuff that started downloading was no-names from mp3.com. I never saw any metallica come off of my computer because there wasn't any there. Something called the imperial March which I was told was a spoof. Unknowns are helped by this. I am pretty sure that the people who downloaded from me were just randomly surfing for music, not looking for it, because they downloaded stuff from a local band, that sold like maybe 100 total CDs and didn't sell them on mp3.com. Think about that.
According the CNN article, it says that the government launched this on private funds.(Hence the government) Russia doesn't exactly have a great reputation as far as business and money are concerned. They are behind on their section of the new International Space Station due to lack of funds. They killed the Mir program because of lack of funds. Who is to say that they aren't using this program to get private funds to do government stuff with. What it to keep them from saying, "You put $xxxMilloin into fixing out space station and now we want it back. Oh, by the way, thanks for mopping the floors." ?
Maybe they are going to once again screw the US and start up Mir again rather than work internationlly.
This may sound foolish to some. I see that in the future, with the way technology keeps evolving, that long distance will no longer cost 10 cents a minute(of 5 with Sprint'sNickel Nights) It will be the same a local call.
If that happens, I for one will be happy to spend five grand on a server and an OC-12 (or whatever is needed) to set up a "private server." On this server, you will be able to do what you please (as long as you don't tick me off) and also access the internet. Very similar to an ISP but I won't be making money off of it except for you rich people, who will set up slush funds for me.
IRC, Mail, Webserver, the whole works, totally private. Now of course, when asked about it, you will respond "Huh, never heard of that, good idea though." Maybe I am crazy, but there hasn't been anything yet that we havne't gotten around.
Sure this isn't totally realistic, but this way it can be scaled back to meet economic demads. Any feedback?
(I think my sig goes nicely with the two top moderated posts) I realize that I am late for moderation, but am I late to save the net?
We have the Democrat Party, the Republican Party, the Comunist Party. What we need it a geek party, no not a LAN party. Suggestions for Names: 1. Slashdot (no I'm not trying to suck up) 2. They Cyber Party (this could cause some problems with the morally corrects) 3. insert your suggestion here.
If a couple of people with money, some techs with brains, and a bunch of ornery geeks all band together, we will have the most powerful organization in the United States.
I get bacon and heart attack Bucky has a pulse again. (And he can eat the fatty bacon from the pig that saved his life, the pig lives on While this is both a good and a bad thing, I think it is more good. It would enable us to save more lives because we could essentially grow perfect hearts, but it would be more helpful if they could manipulate the genes so that the pig was just any old pig but it had 5 cloned hearts. This way we have 5 healthy hearts and some bacon and pork chops instead of having people flip out about all these pigs that were cloned with a problem in them and since we all at the pig we all have the problem.
Moderation for Funny and Insightful accepted with gratitude.
I am sure that the is a catch. Either they will wind up doing work while at home, or it is so that they are totally accessible to the company. Sure it will increase productivity, but I am betting that some of these companies get burned. Especially if they are good computers. If they are all in one systems that only have 1 expansion slot then they are fine but if they have each piece separate, what is to stop an employee from buying a new motherboard and processor (AMD) and selling the old one (Intel)? I would do it.
Handhelds tend to be used as personal organizers, and furthermore won't have the room to handle the heat dissipation of the current generation of 1ghz chips, but disregarding that, let's think about where they're going. The tendency right now is in the direction of communication, so let's assume we suddenly get cameras on them that imply a need for compression. Well, that still doesn't require 1ghz, but beyond that, to transmit moving images like that requires again a decent amount of cellular bandwidth, which is going to be harder to come by than even the new Intel chips. So how about number crunching? Generally that requires large sets of data, and that requires miniaturized storage, which isn't there yet either.
I have talked to numerous people who used slide rules for math, and used three pages front and back to do one math problem. Now I just plug it into a faithful TI-86. Think how in a few years, we could all be doing analysis of major equations. Even now it takes about a minute for a 20 degree probelm (don't ask me how I know). Each generation of chip gets cooler. Think what one of those K6s would feel like if it were majorly OCed. HOT! As these developements come, we get better technology in everything. It is only a matter of time before I have a TI-1000 (not an advertisement) that has a lens on the end and soem way to transmit info out the bottom. It will be able to take pictures, do math, and have say infrared gaming. Now that is what I call study hall.
The people that work at M$ are not stupid. I bet a fair number of the developers run Linux just to learn it for something to do. They don't live off of it. If it were to crash on their machine they wouldn't cry over it. Some of you would. (unintentional insult) Some of these guys also read slashdot. I would bet my life savings on it. Gates himself probably reads updates on what is happening here. Slashdot is his most vocal opponent as far as spreading the word. Some lucky guy at M$ is going to read all this about how to destroy Linux and take it to his boss and get a bonus for his great idea. Linux will never die, but it could be crippled. The guys at M$ have thought of this already. They are probably ready to roll with the idea. This article could encourage them to do it because it may give them ideas that they didn't already have. On the other hand, it could make them think about it. If this stuff was posted way in advance, you would have a case to go to the public with saying that it was predicted. All you have to do is prove that it modifies things that it shouldn't. Did we help M$ here? Ask me that question when they release Office for Linux. Then we will know.
F.Y.I. I use Windows 98 as my primary OS. I have Mandrake installed on a partition and do use it from time to time, but I can't seem to get my net connection to work right so am primarily stuck with Windoze. Microsoft is EVIL, but for now, I can't access/. without it. *weeps* If any of you merciful souls out there has an awesome Linux machine that you would like to send me out of pity, I would appreciate it. You could help to save me from them, the evil ones.
Although I know that Linux isn't compatable with like 100 processors, other forms of Unix are. Couldn't they just assemble one computer with like 20 233 MHz processors? That would be 4.66 GHz. That is 4 times faster than anything a consumer can get and only if they overclock it. For that matter couldn't I do it? How many processors does Windoze support? how many does Linux? This is interesting. If you have some info about this e-mail me at zeedotcom@techie.com I like the idea of using 3 400 MHz processors on the same board than using 1 1.2 GHz will cost a small fortune. It also eliminates the need for the LAN and stuff like that. Please, e-mail me if you have ideas on this.
I may seem stupid but I want to see this stuff and I don't seem to be finding much information on where to look. I mean I know the sky but when and what direction? Due to the fact that I won't be back on/. for a day or two please e-mail me with a response, I will be able to check that. I live in Wisconsin, outside the city. Please let me know where to look.
I work at a Petro and have heard a lot of praise about this service. It believe it is called Park'n'View or somethign like that but dont' quote me. I have heard from several truckers who have used it that it is excellent. I believe it is a station that you park next to and then you get phone lines and lines for satelite too. I am not sure on the specifics but i believe that if you wanted to park a car there and were going to pay the same rate as the truckers that they would let you do it.
but in Chemistry today we were watching the teacher heat up stuff like copper and various compounds. He said that it was because of the distance between the electron shells that different colors appeared. If you mix all the colors, you get white. This would explain the different colors because of different compounds and elements. Also it would explain going through glass. If for that micro-second, the electrons became energized enough to transfer the reaction to the internal atmosphere of the plane, then it oculd in theory pass through anything. Now don't take this for fact because I am in beginning chemistry but how about thinking at a lower level? It is easier and it makes the egotistical "scientists" say you are crazy cuz they didn't try it first.
Now would you look at that, a 10th grader just made sense out of a mystery that has been around for thousands of years just because he was reading/. It really does make you smarter.
I realize tha Bill Gates is like the greatest man on earth, *laugh* but do we need a full interview posted? I could have dealt with a summary and a link to another page with the full posting. Besides, why is this news now? Wasn't it done 20 years ago?
You wanna know? Try it and set up a webcam for the rest of us to see. If you stand next to it and dump a bunch in I will give you a dollar. But I want footage. HaHa
Just cuz some idiot Republican in Arizona is a moron doesn't mean that all of them are. I have mostly Republican ideas but I don't think that coed visits should be banned or that the internet should be highly moderated. As far as I am concerned, all the old people in state and federal legislatures, both Democrat and Republican can go to China or wherever as long as they aren't telling me what to do when they don't even realize that it isn't 1930 anymore.
Now look, Anybody can buy a cd-r drive for less than 200 bucks. Many people like myself buy them just for the heck of it. Others for backup and others for other reasons. it is only a matter of time before we get DVD-R and RW. What happens then. People (not me of course) make illegal copies of music CDs with discs that cost 3 dollars. DVD-R discs won't cost too much more in a year or two. Even if they put some sort of protection on it, I haven't seen protection that wasn't hacked by somebody. What people will do is one person buy/rent this disposable crap and like 20 blank discs and then make copies and sell them for 5 bucks a piece. It won't work unless you sell it for like $1 a piece, then you make no profit if you are a legitimate company. How about just sticking to regular DVD that doesnt' self destruct. You will make more in the long run and the company that doens't sell disposable will come out on top.
I wrote a similar parody of Romeo and Juliet as a project for a class in school. Because it went over the teachers head I got the best grade in class. It should be posted here Keep in mind that this was written for people who use the internet at school on macs and have no concept of the real internet. It was simplified for them. On another note it seems that due to the amount of hits it is getting and the bandwidth it draws it making difficult for the pages to load. I have had to constantly re-click links and reload individual pictures.
Look I use Windows and I am sorry. I just don't have the time to invest in getting Linux operational(I do have it and it is installed on my computer just not configured). mIcrosfot rules the world we have to accept that. If I had the money to spend on getting another decent box I would have a Windows-PC for everyday use due to the fact that most people use it and there just aren't the adaptances to linux on everything. And one with various OS's Linux, and Solaris(you can get an Intel version), and others that I want to play with. As soon as they make linux a "put the cd in and start the computer and all you have to do is type your name" OS then it will gain popularity. Until then pathetic people will use windows cuz it it pre-installed and people like me will use it cuz we don't have the time to configure it but know that It is True Purity and a small percentage of the population that talks REAL LOUD will use Linux and we will envy them. It also doesn't help that all from the store PCs come with windmodems and you gotta pay at least 50 bucks extra to get a non-winmodem.
My parents won't let me be homeschooled under normal circumstances. Plus the way the cameras could work, It could definitely be a plus for some sponsors. "Intel webcam used to conduct school from school to home." or whatever. I have some good ideas for an e-business, the problem is my parents don't exactly think I would succeed at anything, they never give me credit, and I don't have the money or hardware to start anything.
