Why do we need to store all the information in a fully formatted document. I know that good ol' A4...or American Letter standard will persist for a long time, but surely if it's just the information we need to retain there would be a better way of storing it without all the formatting cruft thrown in that makes it hard to decipher if you don't have a massive spec to write a loader from.

Afterall everyone here is mainly worried about retaining the information in a format that is readable by future generations right? right!?

The thing is, this is all some political game between governments and Microsoft. It's played out like this:

Government person A wanted to stop being locked into Microsoft products.
A was told to give a reason why.
A came up with "Because it's not a open format. Information is controlled my MS".
Policy was made that documents had to be in an open format
Microsoft pulled a naming stunt putting "Open" in the name
Policy was changed to format has to be an ISO standard
Microsoft responds by pushing OOXML through ECMA then tried to back door it through ISO
    662 comments are thrown in
slashdotters spend hours playing this new game
    ???
    Profit

So MS has changed the game by producing paperwork. The idea has changed from using standards that don't belong to MS, to using MS standards that are ISO approved. Nice move, but the reality is that most people are just happy to load MS documents in MS Word the same as they have always done. MS Word isn't going to change much, and the original idea has been buried.

I'd just prefer to play ProgressQuest.

Unfortunately all the information about the one true god was lost 1000s of years ago, so since then everyone who worships a god goes to the severest depths of hell. Elsewhere in the world this sort of thing has been standard practice for defense scientists for over 30 years. If they are leaving because of this then they won't find piece of mind elsewhere. The security people just don't like workers keeping secrets that can be used to blackmail them. The people who collect this information don't care if you are gay, they just worry if you are a closet gay.

There's other things too. The enemy gets the same info from observation, they don't care about privacy laws. The security people, by collecting this information, can look for weak points, like suppose all the scientists are going to the same whore house or something. Chances are the enemy has planted a spy there, and so the security people can look for spies in that location.

Look we are talking about defense scientists. They make a choice to go into that field, they get told on day one that their personal lives will be observed.

There should be some electrical cables connected to your transmission. One is for the reversing lights, and one is for the starter motor lockout. Short out the starter motor lockout and you can crank your engine while in Drive, or just hard wire a fat "Punch Me" button on the dash that connects the power directly to the starter solenoid.

I agree that I don't see the point of porting C# to a server type operating system like Linux, and as far as writing CLI tools there probably isn't any difference between C# and Java. But for a Desktop operating sytem like Windows the introduction of C#/.NET as been bloody brilliant! Yes you are right, there's no place in the Linux space for Desktop Application Development Productivity tools as Linux is just for server apps. :-)

Seriously though, if it's appropriate then people will use it. If not then it will die. All options are there for people to pick from. Open Source software is driven by people working on stuff that they are interested in. If implementing C# floats their boat then it doesn't mean that they would have put that effort into developing some other language, so it's no loss that the effort has been put in. C++ is 5x faster though for stuff like image processing. Fortunately it's really easy to mix C++ and C# because that's the way C# was designed rather than the puritanical design that is Java. There are some advantages to it.
