Is that really that much better? It's visual spam. And typically the response rate is pretty poor. Also it's harder to localized ads (specially with people on mobile devices, verizon for example has my location set as kansas city despite the fact that I live in CA).
In terms of advertising, I feel like direct mail is some of the most intrusive in my life. It doesn't pop over the article I am trying to read, it doesn't make noise, it's not actively trying to get my attention, it's not flashing.
Yea cause you know there's a surplus of those around right now *rolls eyes* Again it has been proven junk mail works, that's why they send it so it drives business (many times to local businesses).
Do you realize how many jobs come from so called junk mail? You do realize it is sent because the return rate is something like 2% (which in the world of marketing is HUGE!) right?
Just sayin.
The impact of losing USPS would be fair greater than most people here seem to think. Think of all the "junk mail" you get, ever thought about how many people are employed printing and mailing that stuff? Or magazines? Or coupons? Or Newsletters?
Or how many jobs are kept around because of direct mail advertising?
I'd bet you the cost of keeping USPS alive is less than the tax revenue it enables businesses to bring in.
You and everyone else here it seems. In the mean time sales taxes will keep going up and services will keep getting cut. Think it's about time to tell CA to peace out. And they wonder why everyone is leaving (as are all the jobs).
I've lived here for years now. IDK anymore.
This! I don't know why people talk about this more. From what I can property taxes here haven't even kept up with inflation. No wonder we can't afford anything.
I miss the days when it had to be perfect the first time, think about it, in the days of old, it seems like now people have no issue releasing half done games (I'm looking at you EA!) because "we can just patch it later". Gone are the days when that would have cost so much it had to be right the first time. I kinda miss those days.
That could be true but at the rate they are cutting it that won't last long, the state also asked the CSU to up enrollment a number of years ago.
Pretty sure this graph isn't adjusted for inflation even, this year the CSU has the lower funding than it had in 1998-99 (before inflation is taken into account)and 60,000 more students (not to mention the addition of a campus). How do you cut instate enrollment (I know when I came to Cal Poly in 05 >5% of students were out of state, so I let's assume for the sake of argument that it was even less in 99, and 10% now) 50k+ students? That's basically what we're talking about.
It should be noted most staff haven't even gotten a cost of living adjustment in years.
I work for Cal Poly SLO as a systems administrator, and we just had our sort of back to school pow wow where they were talking about increasing out of state enrollment. This has been happening for awhile now at cal poly, because the state isn't giving the schools the money they need. It has come out this year that the state now provides less than 50% of our funding (around 45ish IIRC), 10 to 15ish years ago that number was more like 90%.
It's gotten to the point that office trash now only gets emptied once a month (so basically you have to do it). Of course the buildings where administration is are cleaned every night. It's pretty sad really and I hope that they continue to increase out of state enrollment to try and offset this.
The people who got the best deal out of the Compaq deal was compaq dealers. How do I know? I worked for one! They sell to public sector and man to go from installing compaq (They were so proud they made the state "A Compaq State!") to installing HP, they looked so good.
True but you also get a lot more in other countries. CA has infrastructure that's falling apart, failing schools, cut backs in their colleges year after year, and so on.
The data that i've seen (I spent a bunch of time googling it) show that it would hardly be fair or flat. The bottom 2/3rd would pay the majority.
Also a big chunk of CA's problem is prop 13 which limits how much property taxes can be raised
"The proposition decreased property taxes by assessing property values at their 1975 value and restricted annual increases of assessed value of real property to an inflation factor, not to exceed 2% per year. It also prohibited reassessment of a new base year value except for (a) change in ownership or (b) completion of new construction." (you can google/read the rest of the wikipedia article if you so desire)
Housing prices increased and CA is heavily taxed in every other way because of it. If the weather wasn't nice I swear no one would live here. It sounded like a great idea at the time, but it really hasn't worked out well I'd say (i moved here from out of state about 6 years ago to go to school and this place is a cluster).
I've been following a bug that has been open for something like 5 years. Some dev looked at it the other day and went wtf how is this old ass bug still open?
Apple cut off what ever balls OS X server had in lion. Many (my self included) used OS X server in larger environments, lion is now clearly targeted at people with small businesses. Want proof? Look at the tools they shipped with Lion Server, look at the hardware they ship now.
If they had fixed the issues with OS X server it would have been a great product but instead it was always pledged with a buggy directory that would keel over if the wind blew the wrong way and OS X not picking up preferences (that got really bad in 10.6). Because of this many are now ditching OS X servers for mac OD integration (where I BOFH is).
Makes me kinda sad really, OS X server could have been an amazing product, but apple didn't care so it rotted and is now basically dying.
Have you SEEN congress? I wouldn't put it past them ban ALL dns. Would solve the problem.

Also you can always opt out http://consumerist.com/2008/03/8-ways-to-opt-out-of-junk-mail-lists.html

Its more than just them though, it's the businesses they generate business for. By your logic half the country would be out of work

They also want him to keep records of everyone who buys his product. That's not going to be reasonable.
And to think I used up all my mod points yesterday. Why are they never there when you need them?!

And you can bet and 99% of them are garbage that will be giving you issues inside of 2 years. They're cheap for a reason

As part of a well regulated militia. Why do people always just over look the part of a well regulated militia?

In "Liberal" CA, state funding has dropped from 90%ish to less than 50% in less than 20 years (at least here at cal poly). So it's not just texas.

Look at this graph of CSU funding (has enrollment too), the CSU is now funded with less money than it was in 1999! (and I'm pretty sure those numbers ARE NOT adjusted for in inflation.

Look at the funding the CSU has received from the state vs the number of students. The state basically demanded enrollment go up, promised funding and never delivered, to the point this year now has a smaller budget than 12 years ago.
The data that i've seen (I spent a bunch of time googling it) show that it would hardly be fair or flat. The bottom 2/3rd would pay the majority.

I'm pretty liberal and I can't wait to get out of the clusterfuck called CA.
People pay lots of taxes here, but prop 13 completely fucked property taxes. You do realize sales tax is almost 10% in many places right?
I've been following a bug that has been open for something like 5 years. Some dev looked at it the other day and went wtf how is this old ass bug still open?
I so wish I had mod points so I could mod you up for funny. That's so true!

Motorolla makes a bunch of the phones. I am personally on my 3rd moto droid in under 2 years, and know 2 other people with the same issue.
