  1. Re:Next up on Thumbprints Used To Check Books Out of School Library · · Score: 4, Insightful

Yes, but why on earth would they bother to spend that kind of money on something for which they already have a solution? For certain applications, the technology you're suggesting makes sense. But for books at a school library? Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just use a scan system like they do at our public library? Basically when you put a book on reserve a librarian places it in with the ones on hold and then you go pick it up off the shelf, scan it along with your card and are out the door. Sure it's more expensive than even more simple systems, but it's a lot less problematic than conditioning kids to think that it's normal to have to pass a biometric check to check out a book.

I've gotten ebooks in PDF format and they suck. They'd be much better off with an XML based book that could be contained in a single zip file and then interpreted by a program. PDFs are hard to read and you lose out on having the text reflow, being able to change the text size, font family. On top of that these days they can be infected with malware because they include code that doesn't really belong in a document.

One of the main reasons why the music industry did that was because the music stores weren't playing nice with each other. If you had an iPod you were more or less stuck with the ITMS and if you didn't have an iPod good luck buying anything from the largest online music store in business. The implementations were buggy and tended to not play well with various computers.

They could fix a lot of that and possibly make it work. But betting that it's going to reduce piracy rates sufficiently to make up for the costs of implementing it is more than a little dubious.

More than that it's hardly an effective way of bringing the extremists into check. It just gives more ammunition for them when they say that we don't get or respect Islam.

Free speech has never been about saying whatever you could to offend other people. It's been to assure the people of the ability to speak out about meaningful things. This isn't any different than bans on homophobic, racist, antisemitic posts that most websites of that sort have.

It's not, you just don't call it a placebo when the person knows about it. It's a relatively common way of treating things like migraines, back pain, explosive temper and a large number of mental illnesses. It's a misconception that to make use of that effect that you can't know about it, you just don't call it a placebo when you're doing it purposely. It's sort of like why hypnosis does such a great job for pain relief even though it tends to do a lousy job of treating other things.

  17. Re:An apt reminder... on Acupuncture May Trigger a Natural Painkiller · · Score: 1

Sigh, acupuncture is more or less just a training system for this stuff. With enough study a person can do it completely on their own using just the power of their mind. The reason why they use needles is that it's really the only way that anybody has found to show people where those places that need stimulation are.

The suggestion that this somehow makes acupuncture pseudoscience or not worthwhile is an idiotic conclusion to make. You don't hear people saying that sort of thing about Tylenol or most of the other OTC pain relievers even though they don't achieve even that level of result. Likewise we don't generally suggest that the education system needs to be tossed out because people are capable of learning completely on their own.

But really on top of that, acupuncture just isn't something that lends itself easily to scientific study. I'm not defending the lack of definitive proof, but it is important to recognize that you're dealing with individuals who react in subtly different ways to treatment. And you can't readily separate out the sources of bias in the way that you would normally want to do. Which leads a lot of the studies to be more or less worthless in terms of giving a reliable conclusion.

Yes, if you want to copy all your music or have it sorted by albums and only want to copy full volumes. Or you don't mind copying the entire directory and hope it gets properly updated. The fact that something is simple doesn't mean that it's easy to use or a wise design decision. iPods always had an issue with having to see what music was on the player every time you turned it on. Basically because they allowed you to copy music directly the player didn't really know whether there was new music without checking. Not that the alternative of using a special program is great, but it doesn't have that issue.
