If OSS is about freedom then I am free to choose a distro/window manage/program that does things the way I want. When I don't find that, then I have EVERY RIGHT to complain about it. Until Linux developers loose this crappy attitude(We're going to do it our way or else....unless you can provide a patch...), Linux will ALWAYS loose out to everything. To web designers who don't have the time to customize their site to Linux/Firefox(ie they use flash and other things more difficult to get going on all Linux platforms), to other commercial apps that can run on top of Linux(oh wait, I am a open source freak I don't ever run closed source apps) and basically just lose.
Now, not every Open Source programmer is like this. There are some that....care! I have e-mailed a couple developers and said hey this isn't working...they fixed it with in a day.
Sorry, working for free is not an excuse. Of course working for free, you don't have to care, but then neither do I. If you want to drive users away, continue being like this. If you want people to use your stuff, then be responsive.
Linux Developers are NOT the only users ANYMORE. If Linux is to make headway on the Desktop, then this is the kind of attitude that needs to go.
For a example of how you can achieve a nice balance of things is Ubuntu. As long as you stick with the Gnome desktop and the regular packages, you probably won't have much of a user issue. The distro doesn't take things for granted.
You bring up a good point about Stallman. Stallman also has a thing.....he wants us all to use Open Source software no matter what it seems... He also believe's it's wrong to get paid for programming. He won't come out and say it, but that's pretty much what he stands for. My company is wrong because we chose to use Windows for our clients and AIX for our serrvers.
Walmart is allowed to sell what they want. If the record company wants to sell an album at Walmart, then it has to fit Walmart's standard. If that means the album's music and cover art need to be family friendly, then so be it. They don't have to sell the latest Fifty Cent album. They will sell other things to take the place of that.
Anyone who THINKS captcha's are a true Turing is well, not right!:D Did we not just have the article about PWNctha(sp)?? Captcha is just a way to make sure you have a human on the other side. Some humans can barely pass that sometimes with especially messed up captcha images or if your blind.
I am on the gmail site now and it's not out of beta. Not yet. I bet it will be in a few months though. This IS the first time anyoen who goes to the site can register and for now only via the SMS text message. If you ask me, it's a ingenious way to implement a captcha. Still has issue with handicap users (unless one has a phone that can text to speech the SMS). This will only prevent spam for a short time. All the spammer needs is a pocket pc phone and a program that can read the SMS, and go to the web page and authenticate it. Easy peasy and all they have to use is a smartphone.
There has to be something wrong with your system. I currently am running Hoary on my Acer Celeron 2.0 GHz Machine with only 256 MB of ram and Ubuntu is pretty responsive. Only 2 things take some time to run....OpenOffice.org 1.1 (I have never liked it) and firefox is a bit slow launching. Once running, they are both fine usually. I am definitely going to try the new Enlightenment tonight.
Well, that's an elitist attitude! This is the EXACT reason why Linux has a rough time on the desktop. Users are used to saying well I like this like that and I wish the taskbar was green instead of blue. Linux developers need to design FOR the user instead of themselves if they want to take market share from Microsoft. The goal of developers should be to have peolpe USE their software. I fully believe Raster cares. Otherwise they would not have rewritten Enlightenment which is what DR 17 is for the most part.
Could not agree more. So many times do I see Religion getting the blame when it's corporate shortsightedness.
I can't name ONE song or artist today that is as good as have been in the past. Artists from the early 70's were probably the last ones that will last longer then 5 minutes. The record labels thinking we like to hear the same song 500 times a day is wrong. They always try to repackage things as well. These boots are made for walking?? ICK! If they were smart, they would check out music from the Pod-Safe music network and try playing some of that. There are some very good artists with original music that get ignored because the corporate drones don't have enough of a free mind to check out the new music or the new music is too risky. Same goes for science. RnD doesn't quickly return dollars, so corporations cut it. Nevermind that ONE project that gets cut could make the company billions...10 years down the road.
You know, just because Bush is a Christian you mistake EVERY single thing that he does. You let the fact that he's a Christian cloud your judgement. This is what frustrates me so with those who don't agree with Bush. The ones who disagree with Bush with regards to science are in the MINORITY....last I checked Bush won both the electoral and the popular vote this time. That is not what George W Bush stands for. He stands for America which includes religious freedom as a value as well.
If Vint and many others are concerned that scientific progress is being held up because of our beliefs, well, tough! This is a democratic republic and Bush is not acting alone and cannot act alone. Congress is a willing participant as is the Supreme Court. The American constitiuency has also spoken.
Personally, I think saying that we face a turning point where one side would be a Christian Republic is wrong and off base. First, what is described in the article does not even touch on the fact Bush is a Christian! The word is not even in the article! Second, why does it matter that he is Christian? The morals of stem cell technology cannot be ignored because not just Judeo-Christian beliefs would find it offensive. Almost EVERY religion on the planet would have issues with stem cell research. We can't ignore genetic testing either because it could head towards cloning humans. You think identity theft is an issue now, just wait til cloning is feasible. I know almost everyone on the planet would feel cloning is wrong. No matter what anyone says, it's ALWAYS important to ask if something should be done. Not doing this risks violating moral issues as well as safety issues as well.
I personally am encouraged greatly that Bush wants increased spending at NASA. Going to Mars is important and sending humans there is going to be a ricky, yet necessary mission. Machines can only show you so much. Having a human there that can make judgements that a machine cannot is going to increase our knowledge about Mars 10 fold.
You know, adoption IS an option. How is saying that it's God's will that we not have another child not taking responsibility? Maybe financially, we have done everything we can within our means (we have) and maybe there are biological means for getting around this that we don't agree with (making embryos and implanting multiple ones til one takes and killing off the rest is something I find morally reprehensible). How does that make my opinion wrong?? At least I have the guts to post this on Slashdot. That's more responsibility then the average Slashdotter. Most Slashdotters don't even have enough guts to say they believe in God!
The USPTO must have a WORKING example or evidence that there is one. That would prevent things like the guy who claims to have come up with the iTunes interface before Apple. In fact, why patent software all together?? Isn't it already protected by copyright? Why should I not be able to write my own software similar in function and look to iTunes? They are not doing anything different with it then what Winamp has done and there are only so many ways to sort music.
If it's so important you must write it down, yet you state it's random stuff, then it must not be that important, so why write it down?
I personally am not much of a note taker (unless I need to write/type specific things down). The reason is you are right....much notes are not too important. Sometimes it is. If it's important, I write it down. If not, I don't. I know many people who madly write everything on the chalkboard/whiteboard and 90 percent of what is said. The thing is some things in class are just not meant to be written down. Some are. The idea of being in class is so the teacher can present you with an example and opportunity for you to see the problem being worked through. Sometimes you just need to see it being worked on before the lightbulb goes off and you go AHA...I know what to do! Anyway, writing notes down can be achieved with a tablet. I still don't feel that a computer is overkill for notes. You must have never tried to take notes via computer. I personally love it and won't go back. Until I get a tablet, my pda is my trusty note taker.
You know, I, personally would never go through what some would go through to have a child. My wife and I were trying to have a second child and we got to the point where insurance would not cover it. I said we can't go any further. While it saddens me a little, I stil have my son. I do not want her to risk her life trying fertility drugs and possibly have 3 or more kids to take care of. Don't get me wrong, I love kids and God gave me a wonderful child to love everyday, but I personally feel if God wants us to have another child it will happen.....the normal, old fashioned way. There are too many risks in the fertility drugs and in-vitro fertilization, while it works, does carry with it the moral problem of what do you do with the other 20 embryos? I don't feel it's morally right to distroy the embryo's and I don't really want them to go to anyone else. I also do not want them to be used for stem cell research either. So, I won't participate in this kind of way to have a child. I will just love the child I have EVEN more then I already do (without spoiling him of course).
It fascinates me that so long as people are trying to have a child, everything including THROWING AWAY embryos it's ok, but it's not ok if they are doing stem cell research. I personaly believe it's not ok in BOTH counts.
This story is among many experiences as of late that has me extremely discouraged of the compentency of ANY school administration. In this particular story, the people who exepcted the students to NOT look at a sticker on the laptop and figure out how to log in to the adminsitrator account are the ones that should be punished (fired). The students were just using their brain! Isn't this something that should be encouraged?? I guess that's not what school administrators want. They want brainless students who follow "orders".
My next question is why are these kids being issued laptops?? Laptops are fragile devices and have to be treated with care. I can ony imagine how many broken iBooks the school fixes in a year. These are schools that are always screaming for money.
There seems to be money in the public schools to buy these things, however they do not have the money to pay a proper admin.
There also seems to be enough money in districts to buy these things, but not:
Koolaid for the kids Paper for the photo copier Sponges for cleaning the desks Handsoap Napkins
No kiddin...these were either on my son's list or my neice and nephews list of school supplies. I am going to have a SERIOUS talking to the teacher and school administration when his first day in school arrives. If I don't get a resolution, I will ask about the next school board meeting. If the taxpayers do not stand up and ASK why they are being asked to buy koolaid for the whole class, then the next thing you know parents are going to be buying the textbooks as well. School supply lists such as these are taxation without representation and are the things that need to be brought up during aproval of future schoool levys. If Paying a extra 5 a month on my property tax (where school money comes from in my state) gets me out of supplying my sons class with koolaid for the year, then I will be happy.
Agreed. This is covered by FOIA and any law that would restrict this would contradict FOIA rules. I may be wrong, but I think even Top Secret military information is eventually released to the public when it's no longer a risk to our security or our troops which could be 10 years....20 years...40 years or forever...like atomic bomb designs that are 40-50 years old are likely still Top Secret.
Weather information is too important to have to pay for it. Accuweather before the internet was the only way TV stations who did not hire meteorologists could do the weather. In fact, I remember a time ago where the local station just paid for the Accuweather folks to record the forecast. Now they may still pay for the weather but it's usually read by a jock or a paid meteorologist. I wonder what the meteorologists who work for Accuweather think about their own companies stance?? In any case, I am ALL FOR RSS feeds for weaher warnings. It's a excellent way to dissemenate the information. I just hope they have a big enough pipe and let us hit it every 5 minutes or less. You can e-mail those notes home and pull in links mentioned in class instantly. I honestly see NOTHING wrong with wanting to use a computer to take notes. Paper notes can always get lost and while the same thing can happen with computer files, it's easy to back them up. You can use a floppy, a USB key, aq gmail account.....
We have that. It's called the ARRL. In America at least. American Radio Relay League is our voice in congress. If your a ham, I advise you to join. There is strength im numbers.
It's also more then just Amateur Radio and Police, Fire and Abulance radios that can be affected. You TV can be affected as well as AM/FM broadcast band. Has anyone here ever been living near a noisy (as in RF) powerline? Power companies are notorius for letting things get bad before the fix them. As long as the wire delivers power, they do not care if it spews RF all over the place. Notching the Ham band out will not be effective. The power company must not have heard of Harmonics.....sure the main signal is notched out but what about the harmonic of the signal? Harmonics is what is going to cause this to be a bigger then ham radio thing. Also, BPL is being promoted by the FCC to be able to bring broadband internet to rural America and that just ain't so. Rural users typically have older power delivery systems when compared to the urban folks and those are not always going to be able to carry BPL.
The BIG reason power companies want BPL is so that THEY can use it for reading your meter. They want to make your electric meter to be adressable and able to be read over the internet. They also want to have teh transformers and what not be able to report their status over it as well. BPL is about cutting some costs for electrical companies and it's just a bonus that they can add ISP to thier hat as well.
or something along those lines. Make the e-mail address NEVER change and simply change the mailing address in the LDAP directory (if that's what they use). They can issue a key to everyone and the mailing address never changes, but periodically the key is changed.....say everytime the pop3/imap4 password changes.
Anyway, until you can definitely verify that the e-mail came from your superior, sending Orders via e-mail should not be allowed and that would get rid of this type of "problem".
Now you don't have to use encryption all of the time...you can say only use your key when encoding official questions to the superior and orders from the superior. Otherwise, as long as the e-mail is not sensative, don't encrypt.
Better yet....DARPA needs to create a better e-mail system for the soldiers to use (and then release it as open source or at the very least write RFC's....). E-mail as it currently stands is pretty much unsecured, and so easy to spoof it's not funny. Securing it is NOT easy for basic e-mail users like Generals.
I doubt Dell would do this. How do I know? After being a strictly IBM shop, (server, desktop and laptop), we made a deal with Dell. Anything new will be Dell. In 4-5 years, everything will be Dell except for any pSeries Servers we run and will continue to run as they are definitely superior to Intel based servers. On the other hand, I do kind of wish you were right because that would mean my IBM PC and Thinkpad would get replaced by a shiney dual core Pentium D and a Dell Latitude laptop.
The deal with this has to be that the school was no longer going to run the Mac software so they were really of no use. I wish I lived in Henrico, but then I would have been one of the trampled. The county should have really done this on eBay.
Wtih a son entering public school, I get to experience the stupidity of our public school system as a parent. Here's his list of crap to buy for school:
1 pair Fiskar scissors 2 boxes of crayola crayons (24 ct) 3 packages of #2's 6 Glue sticks 1 Book Bag 2 packages Crayola Markers(NO skinny markers please) 1 small container liquid soap
now here's where it gets weird....
4! Cans of Koolaid Powder 3 pk of 5 oz Cups 4 chunky pink erasers 2 FAMILY size boxes of Kleenex 1 pkg napkins (200 Count) 4 kitchen sponges (?!?!???) Lastnames A-P 1 pkg 1 qt Ziploc bags Lastnames Q-Z 1 pkg 1 gal Ziploc bags Room 11 1 roll 35 mm film (What? No Digital cams??) Room 9 1 white cotton T-shirt $20.00 "Project Adventure" Fee
Ok....notice there's NO PAPER on the list...this is a Kidergarten class....you know....learn to write and maybe read??!?!??...then take a nap on your towel.
4 Can's of Koolaid powder??!??!? What are we supplying the whole school with Koolaid? What is my tax dollars buying? Certainly NOT a new school building as the bulding is likely older then any school I went to as a kid. You had better believe I am going to be at the next school board meeting I am able to attend. I want to know....what DO they buy with my money?? Certainly isn't sponges for wiping down the tables!
"Seeing the South Park Movie in the theater, there were TONS of young kids (some below 10) being taken by grandparents and such that didn't know any better. How they could ignore the R rating is beyond me."
I disagree. Freedom of Speech comes with responsibility. Most people realize that vulgar statements do not appeal to everyone and the Radio and Television airwaves (NOT CABLE) is definitely not the place for this. You may not be offended and I may not be offended but some people are. People who don't like vulgar statements have every right to NOT hear them when they are not expected just like you have every right to not hear me read statements our of the Bible. I would be just as wrong to do that on TV as I would to swear. I also do not have the right to stand at the bus stop and cuss like a sailor. It is called disturbing the peace. I CAN say what I want but I have to say it in the right place.
If OSS is about freedom then I am free to choose a distro/window manage/program that does things the way I want. When I don't find that, then I have EVERY RIGHT to complain about it.
Easy way to fix this....DON'T SEND ORDERS VIA E-MAIL! Or don't do that until the e-mail has been secured.
I realize that it's nice that the base is in the address, but I would rather see something like thus:
first.last.sumnumber@af.mil
first.last.sumnumber@army.mil
or something along those lines.
1 pair Fiskar scissors
2 boxes of crayola crayons (24 ct)
3 packages of #2's
6 Glue sticks
1 Book Bag
2 packages Crayola Markers(NO skinny markers please)
1 small container liquid soap
now here's where it gets weird....
4! Cans of Koolaid Powder
3 pk of 5 oz Cups
4 chunky pink erasers
2 FAMILY size boxes of Kleenex
1 pkg napkins (200 Count)
4 kitchen sponges (?!?!???)
Lastnames A-P 1 pkg 1 qt Ziploc bags
Lastnames Q-Z 1 pkg 1 gal Ziploc bags
Room 11 1 roll 35 mm film (What? No Digital cams??)
Room 9 1 white cotton T-shirt
$20.00 "Project Adventure" Fee
That's just WRONG!
