While this thing sounds cool and all, what happens when I drive down a dirt road? My shocks don't absorb the bumps and such so well and I can just picture the ceramic head of the hard drive being ground into microscopic dust...
They expect to find some people living in there, but only end up interviewing a couple of bums who live there.
What?!
No alligators?!
No mutant goldfish that are plotting world domination because of rensentnment from being flushed down the toilet?!
No rat-people?!
Goodness... The sewers in NYC are so much more exciting. I'm canceling my vacation to Las Vegas now that I know that nothing exciting happens down there.
Broadcast television frequencies, for example, are worth BILLIONS. But the FCC just sort of gave them away to the networks a long time ago. It's just not right that consumers now have to squeeze their various new electronic devices into just a narrow spectrum.
Well... here in greater metro boston.ma.us, we have 4,5, & 7 on the VHF spectrum, plus 25, 38, 62, and 68 on the UHF side, this means that you, yes, YOU, can get one of these beautiful channels for the low-low price of $10K for 10 years. Nothing is stopping you, besides $$$, of registering a channel of your liking. Hence, you can have your own piece of spectrum to play with.
...while the radio stations have huge chunks of bandwidth that they seem to have been granted lifetime free licenses for...
Excuse me?
Broadcast Radio Stations have to renew their licenses every 10(?) years. You know that message on TV/Radio that says "We are renewing our license, the FCC is having a hearing about us, if you have a complaint about us its at $location on $date". That is done every time they renew their license, and if you have a complaint you can file one or show up. Also, I think licenses cost $5000->$10000 dollars (I am probably off, Take with a large helping of NaCl) every time you renew. So, it's not like aren't paying.
I'll say it again: He's the computer equivalent to the shaking junkie who sticks a gun in the face of a 7-Eleven clerk to get money for a fix...
No disagreement there, I think hes been quoted along the lines of not being able to stop despite knowing that he will eventually get caught.(Link anyone? I could be wrong)
He left a trail a mile wide...
I have to disagree here. There were no real ties between him and the Shimomura attacks. I think he was the target that first popped up on their radar screen after the attacks and was lassoed. There are a lot of weird bits in the "official" version of the story (unsigned warrants, etc) and instead of detailing them I will say:
I strongly recommend reading both The Fugitive Game By John Littman and, to get the other side Takedown by John Markoff, I find Littman a much better read and does much more research into the story then Markoff. Littman presents the story from a impartial 3rd person, and scrutinizes both accounds (Mitnick, who he interviewed via phone while on the lamb, and Markoff's story from his book, NYT stories, and interviews.) I've lent Littman out to techie and non-techie friends and it always recieves high marks, and I think the "Something was Fishy with the govt's case" viewpoint usually results.
Let's face it, there have been thousands of better crackers...
I have to say that Mitnick is one of the better crackers in recent memory, sure he gets the spotlight a lot, but I think thats because he got thrust into the public spotlight back during the Shimomura episode. I mean, how many crackers made the front page of newsweek?
Yes, there are other deserving people out there, but I don't mind Kevin cashing in on his "fame". Who wouldn't?
For those of you in Boston.ma.us...

IIRC, its the first name intials of the people who started Amateur Radio. Take this with a huge helping of NaCl.
Is it just me or does anyone see this evolving into a Copy Protection cat-and-mouse game? For example: Company A creates sequence, somehow circumvents this way of showing the sequence, then releases it, only to have Company B circumvent their circumvention, etc etc etc. Sorta like the Lotus 123 Copy protection game back in the late 80s(?)
Or worse, Company A not release their cure for cancer until they have found a way of having it not be undone by this technique?
I think for every 1 person willing to spend $1200 on a iMac w/iTunes, there would be more then 35 people willing to spend $35 on iTunes without having to spend $1200 on an iMac. Apple is saying "look at these wonderful toys on our platform and/only/ our platform", and people get intrested, but when they have money already invested into a another platform, they don't want to spend more money buying a completely different computer.
Hey, this is slashdot, it comes with the territory ^_^
Yeah, I have no doubt that Apple makes a killer system in some fields. I seriously lust over OS X sometimes, but I just see Apple missing out on a nice chunk of the market by not porting some of their utilities over to Win32. I can understand that Linux is still a Niche market, I just don't see the logic on why they don't they are locking themselves in to a small audience.
I would/gladly/ buy the software, its just tht I don't feel like buying hardware just so I can run it. $800 isn't reasonable when the only thing you are going to do with it is listen to all your ripped CDs. Apple is defying logic when they are ignoring a large audience that would gladly buy their software if they ported it to another platform.
If dozens of software companies won't port their titles over, why should you expect Apple to do so themselves?
Would you invest $BIGNUM dollars to reach ~5% of the PC market?
Now, would you rather invest that money to reach ~95% of the market?
People who have stuff on Apple have a larger audience to gain if they ported stuff over to Win32, as opposed to Win32 coders who have a tiny market segment to gain if they port stuff over to Apple. I don't see whay Apple ignores this large market segment.
...and without iTunes, it'll be darn hard to handle...
Why can't someone make an iTunes clone over on Linux? I really don't want to pay $800 when I am just going to listen to MP3s.
God, Apple ticks me off when they don't port good programs over to non-Apple platforms.
Hence why I said its a bit hazy... Also, MSFt could argue that the MB is the bulk of the computer and thhe swap was not an upgrade but a full fledged system transfer, but IANAL.
Thanks, I'll pass for now.

Now we all know what this will really be used for...
Chief Wiggum: "Continue swimming naked...c'mon...continue!....OK Lou open fire"
I was using that as an extreme example. furrfu.

Sorta like the ITU?
They don't do licenses like the FCC, but they are in charge of band planning IIRC.
Well, I also ran into this problem. so to combat this you may want to check out my Gameboy Advanced Backpack Diesel Generator Mod.
:)
Apparently, there's some serious technical problems with the server load as well.
And nothing helps server load problems like a good ol' slashdottin'!!!
A Bronco pick-up game still occurs daily
This is the game where one white ship travels across the board doing the speed limit, while 50 other ships pursue it.
