Ignore the subject of my post. I was going to go on about how it either wasn't up to par, too expensive, or they had seen no need for it, but when it came to typing it, I didn't feel like typing rambling on.:-)
It really is open source if you just store the data twice. The TrueDisk recovery part is proprietary so it's not really open, you will only be able to read the 'master data', still have to buy their software to recover the undamaged data from their 'recovery sections'. Is the author of this article part of the OOXML team?
'You might say that you consider your privacy to be worth the sale of a 8yr old girl'
She was sold, like a slave(real), or sold as in virtual(not real)?
Yes, there are some clear winners, the forums are great, and the compatibility list is:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Wireles sCardsSupported
As far as the router, I tend to stick with anything that is supported by DD-WRT
http://www.dd-wrt.com/
The best is to find the wireless cards that work perfectly with network-manager right out of the box on the recent version(s) of Ubuntu.
Good insight, I was thinking the exact same thing. It is great to have non-lethal weapons, much better then lethal ones except for the ones that do not leave a trace. This one will probably never leave a visible trace(unless seriously overused) and when there is no proof that a weapon was used against you, how can you make a case that you were abused by it. Same thing with the laser dazzler, causes you to go temporarily blind, but leaves no mark and your vision returns. So the next time you get robbed by someone with a laser dazzler, good luck explaining to the police/judge/insurance company that you were attacked by a weapon that you could not see, and didn't leave a trace. Oh yea, and of course you don't know who did it because you were blind.
Just think of one weapon that has ever been created that hasn't been abused.
Really it is a lot different then a chain link fence. Imagine yourself locked in a cell for a moment, and feeling like you are on fire but have no way to escape it. I can't imagine that result from a chain link fence.
Google's main business is the search and advertising market. Now take this into consideration when the copyright holders will be supplying them 'fingerprints' to all of their copyrighted content. It would cost Google a ton of money if they wanted to tag all of this content by themselves, but instead the copyright holders will be doing this for them, and will be happy to do it also. Granted I don't know how much money they have recouped from search results/advertising from their acquisition of Youtube, but I am sure that they spent more then a passing thought on this before they decided to buy it. So if you figure that they can get away with it long enough to recoup the cost of Youtube, and still acquire all of the data from these 'digital fingerprints', then they still have one heck of a deal going for them, provided they can avoid a costly settlement.
It all depends on how it is set up from their IT shop. Some are locked down pretty tight, where others are not at all. The screen saver doesn't really matter, it is more the power management functions, the main reason for that policy is so that the computer gets locked if they walk away. Which of course locks when you remove your CAC, if enabled.
These are an absolute must to protect yourself from what you are about to subject your computer to. Just remember, all of the security and care free use that you are used to with the Mac OS is going to be gone the moment you run Windows on your machine. Consider yourself warned. As far as other software, the only thing that I really see that Windows has over Mac remains to be games. Other then that you can probably stick with your Mac OS. Good luck!!
I agree with some of what you say. I am at home right now, using the internet for personal use, though sometimes work gets done here at home also. I think of how many people on the base/post where I live waste tons of time at work browsing for a new jacket to wear at an online sporting store, paying bills, downloading jokes from emails, and the list goes on and on. All of this happens while there is still work to be done(there is always SOMETHING to be done), and I am guilty myself sometimes. This brings in a little math calculation. What if you spend only 20min out of the 480min a day doing "personal" non work related things at work. That means for every 24 people that are employed by your "company" that does what you do is not needed. Anyone can add up the savings of getting rid of one more person that they don't need. On the other hand, if it is not so restricted maybe the workers are happier and get more work done that might compensate for the 20min a day, but from my observations, a lot more then 20min per day is wasted on personal things. Though you also bring up that for you it would be ok for people to waste that time paying their bills, chatting, or anything but porn. Either way you are wasting your employers time and money, so why the difference?
I think that this is great, and a way to provide more efficiency, more safety, and less trouble. Of course there are going to be bugs to work out, and the driver is still in control(and needs to be) of the car provided that all systems work as they are supposed to. That being said, it is an option, not required for anyone to use. Most vehicles today already have computer controlled systems that they depend on, and most of the drivers of those vehicles don't even know that they are at work. One example would be Anti-Lock Brakes(ABS) that most people use, don't know how it works, and might not even know when it is working or not except for when an ABS light comes on the dash. I have seen people that are so used to ABS and get into a vehicle without it and can't control the non ABS vehicle in certain situations. I feel that this tech will go in the same way, eventually you will have people that can't seem to drive without it. Now this takes time and won't happen over night, but I do see it in the future. Plus you have to confirm that you are still there by touching the wheel every 10 seconds, if you are one of those people that can't keep their kids in line, those 10 seconds I am sure will be a bonus for you.
That excuse that they can't release it because of the file format is absolutely ridiculous. This is just another reason that we need ONLY open formats in our local, state and federal governments. I understand that security might be of concern for many files, and that can be handled by other security methods like putting the files in an encrypted container of sorts. That way if they need to release the data, they can remove it from the container and have no problem distributing the results. At the same time, why should it need security from reading when it is only votes. Unless the data also contains the names of who voted then it should not be a problem. I also believe that once the person does vote that the data is immediately written to at least 2 places. One should be a printed record that the voter that just placed the vote can easily and positively verify, then also to a digital write once medium that can not be changed, maybe something like a CD that can not be overwritten. I am sure that electronic voting is here to stay, so we need to make sure that it is secure and verifiable by all.
Well everyone says that if you have nothing to hide, then why worry about it. Try telling that to the guy that was abducted by the US gov and tortured for three months before being let go after they realized that the poor guy wasn't who they thought that he was(I hope they don't mistake me for someone else). Anywho, my biggest problem is that everything that has been created has or will be hacked one way or another. It is no longer a question of if, it is a question of when. This includes all encryption, it may be hard, but it has or will be done, history shows us this. As far as mandated monitoring systems, how long before someone hacks their way into these systems and uses them for their own personal goals. The remote monitoring that is now required for both data and voice is bound to have holes in it one way or another. For example someone using a very simple password for the remote "black box" that enables the monitoring. For this reason alone, I think that all communication should be encrypted. As stated before, any "powerful/modern" government will be able to decrypt it anyway, but it will safeguard you from when the system that they use to monitor is compromised. That is the reason that I feel that all communication should be encrypted at multiple levels.
Or, in the case of the Xbox 360, it only requires a simple CD drive firmware flash.

I think you may have missed the point. This would be done for the trial, not when they are exercising a search warrant.

Well that would prevent a problem. Is this something that can be changed by one of their flash updates that they force on everyone?
Or once games start taking up more space then is available on DVD, might not be all that far off.
Then tack on another $200 if you want the external HD-DVD drive to go with it.

A policy that is not enforced holds no merit. And it has nothing to do with a 'screensaver' it has to do with locking the computer. :-)
That reminds me of another article that I had read on here about printing skin using ink jet tech. I believe there will be many great innovations derived from the principles behind it. From printing skin cells and creating solar cells for energy production. The possibilities are endless. Though I think that oil will be a lot harder to push through those tiny holes. http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/01/2 0/2257252
