Not for most people, unless they are on a per MB plan(do they still have these in the US?). I am sure that 99% of the people that have used my open wireless didn't feel bad for doing it, nor should they. I don't feel bad when I borrow someones open access point when I don't have other means of access. They haven't 'deprived' me of anything. If it's not secured you are implying that it is public.
A better analogy would be satellite TV signals, you receive both encrypted and unencrypted signals. The unencrypted signals imply that it is public and the encrypted signals say that it's not. Exact same thing with WiFi.
Not only is it more then just a phone, but I have taken phones with me on trips back to the states that only work in Europe. Why? I used them on the way to and from the airport and wasn't prepared to throw it out just because it wouldn't work in the US.
Using a directional antenna on both ends might be the cheapest/fastest/easiest solution if you want to go back to wireless. With some smart internet shopping, you can find them pretty cheap, or you can make them even cheaper. Also once you have the directional antennas set up you can also drop the power down(dd-wrt firmware) to the lowest setting where you still get a good signal.
Those would be my number one and two requested features to make it just a bit more difficult to determine what you are uploading and or browsing. At least the HTTPS might cut down on some of the self censorship that I am sure is still happening.
On top of that, multiple tag search would be nice.

WEP = breakable within about a min(about 5max) with tools that my 10yr old daughter could find and use. Not only that but once the wireless is compromised, so is the wired side.
Just wanted some more insight from you, what is it that you 'have' to do through the terminal? Why are you using VI if you want a graphical editor? I think gedit might be something you want to check out if you are talking about Ubuntu Linux.

Hell, my mom installed Ubuntu on her desktop and laptop by herself, no command line work needed. Anyway could you please link to your post on the forums where you got nasty replies? I have only seen nasty replies to people with nasty or rude posts. Also if you haven't tried the new version, maybe request some disks, you might have better luck.
Actually, you can run kopete perfectly fine on a regular install of Ubuntu, it will just install some kde libs.

Well, I wouldn't go this route, but you could easily go with A instead of G, then you won't have the cordless phones, microwave, people down the street, etc using the same frequencies. It may not be the cheapest solution, but is probably the best legal solution if you have to stick with wireless.
If you want to stick with your wireless G equipment, I would go with directional antennas as they can be bought or made pretty cheap. Also, if you can stick your router in the basement and point the antenna upwards, then it will only receive strong signals from within your building. That should eliminate most of your interference.
The best solution in my opinion would be to go with wired, esp when you are sharing all of your 'study materials' you will be able to transfer all of those educational videos a whole lot faster without worries about interference.
I also recommend FLAC, that is what I am ripping all of my CDs to. When you can get a 500gig HDD for under $140,it is worth every cent and more to do what you are doing. I have an Ubuntu system set up for network storage so I can play my FLACs with my two Cowon iAudio (Highly Recommended) portable media players(support FLAC natively), streamed to my stereo through the Xbox media center( XBMC , streamed to my computer, my daughters computer, or transcoded for other players.
In my opinion FLAC is 100% the way to go.
