"There would always be the fear that Europe might invade." Are you serious or is it just that you've seen too many Hollywood movies? Why would Europe want to even try? For what gain? What's with the constant fear of countries attacking the US about? That's a pretty f*cked up comment if you really think that (or maybe you're just a very sophisticated troll, I hope that you were just joking).
The only reason the US wouldn't be happy about it would be because of economical reasons. It's highly improbable that Canada adopts the Euro, it was an exaggeration from my part. Anyway, Canada is already in the Mexico-US-Canada economic group, joining the EU would have the side effect of making Mexico and the US in the same group, so a big percentage of government tax income would disappear, etc, etc. It's clear that Canada wants to relate with Europe because of its better founded economy, it's not as prone to grow spectacularly like for example the internet related sector, but it's not as prone to have huge exploding bubbles that leave its citizens economically vulnerable. I'm not saying that European economy is as solid as a rock, a good example is Spain's real estate problem similar to the US's, but its not as exaggerated.
Well, anyway, this summit will limit itself to make Canadian and European economical agreements that will have little or no impact on actual economical bonds. Things that wont happen: no taxes between countries, implementing the Euro, etc. Things that could happen: competing European companies for building government infrastructures and vice verse, better trading bonds between Europe and Canada, etc.
The Comcast of Spain (called Ono) is starting to roll out Docsis 3.0 and they're giving 50/3 Mbps + free calls to all landlines in Spain for 60 euros a month, no download limit. They also will start offering 100/5 Mbps speeds for 20 euros more. I know that 60 euros a month isn't cheap, but it's 50/3 Mbps and with no cap + free landline calls so I think that it's totally worth it, at least compared to the poor Aussies:-/ What really impresses me is the connections some people in northern Europe have. I've seen people from Eindoven with 100/100 Mbps speeds paying only 39 euros a month (O_O) Those connections are really sweet:-P
France and Germany are not the only countries in the EU, you know. And yes, France's and Italian's current presidents are pretty right winged in a scary way, but I hope that things will change a little and the next president will change things back to their normal state. In general Europe barely censures anything compared to what the US censures, but still these new censuring things in France just give me the creeps. Good thing that even when these things pass there's usually something else that blocks them, just like the P2P thing in Netherlands?
Good thing that in other countries it's still legal to share music with each other. In countries like Spain people believe that an artist should earn his money working (aka: doing live concerts) and that the middle men (aka: labels, layers, etc) should go and f*ck themselves because the industry is changing just like when sewing machines started to appear in the industrial revolution: most of their services are no longer needed, so go and work in something else that could be useful for society. Too bad the layers and the labels aren't willing to figure out that their past business model is dying and that they are trying to put a fight while they go down, just like those workers in the industrial revolution.
MacBooks have smaller screens on purpose. Where is the webcam? Where is the Wifi-N? Where is the IR port? Where is the remote control? DVI port? Bluetooth?
They are clearly 2 different kinds of laptops that are NOT comparable.
And now that cellphones with wifi are starting to catch up, some operators are making cellphones work as land line phones when connected to a wifi device so at home/office/etc all national land line calls are free (incoming or outgoing) and when you're outside your phone works as a cellphone with it's normal tariffs.
Oh, and there's an operator in Spain that offers unlimited internet data for 1.2 euros a day, so if you have a good cellphone then it's 36 euros a month for unlimited calls (if you use VoIP), unlimited eMule:-D and unlimited everything. Not bad, huh?
So you are saying that you have one single phone number for every phone you own? The phone at home has the same number as your phone at work and your cellphone?
Wow... so I guess that Slovenian cell phone tariffs are the cheapest in the world or something. I'm an Erasmus in Maribor and I'm paying with a prepaid SIM less than I do with a contract SIM back in Spain:-S
Although when I come back to Spain I'll change my operator that offers calls inside the network for free and outside for 0.12 euros per minute (charged by the seconds used) and an unlimited data plan for 1.2 euros a day (you don't pay anything if you don't use internet). Oh and as all European countries tariffs: incoming calls and SMSs are free so prices compared to the ones in the US should be considered as half of what they appear there.
Good thing it's still legal in Europe and that... they've just passed the vote that said that there should be protection for copyright material _except_ for private users with no lucrative intentions and for personal use.
Good thing that in Spain it's still legal to download mp3 and movies via P2P, although our RIAA (called SGAE) and their minions are saying that it's illegal and since it's not true people are trying to sew them for misinforming people of the law.
I just reported this picture. It's child porn! You can even see his penis!

Actually Canada is trying to get closer to Europe, at least economically to the 27 nations that officially use the Euro: :-D

It would certainly be interesting if some day Canada starts using Euros

Wops, just realized I didn't read your post correctly. My bad :-/
If you want the free open source version of SmoothFirewall, here you've got it:
http://www.smoothwall.org/
It doesn't have as many things as the payed version, but it'll probably do well enough for your demands.

Never heard of Walter Payton (at all).
Football = soccer in the USA. It's still called football in the rest of the nations of the whole world, just clarifying for USA's public.
Seems like it still hasn't cached up to be a general public service to me.

Just for some laughs:
Microsoft CEO Ballmer laughs at Apple iPhone (6 months before it's released):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5oGaZIKYvo
Now that it's out, I only want to say this:
*Zune: 1.000.000 sold in 6 months (14/11/2006 to 29/05/2007)
*iPhone: 500.000 sold in a weekend
Just for everyones information: The problem is with 15 inch MacBook Pros, not with the 17 inch ones.
Meanwhile in Japan they're sending emails with unlimited length instead of 160 character messages. Great! :-(
Just curious: Why is there always a "goatse" first post? Is someone using a Bot to do it or something? Isn't there a way to fix this? :-/

I'm half-Spanish and I'm deeply ashamed by this. I hope that Google has fired that incompetent attention-wh0re.

It doesn't play DVDs... it doesn't double up as a cooking machine... it doesn't withstand a sledgehammer... what's next?
