  1. Got to DISagree about Business Use on Companies Using MS Word "Out of Habit," Says Forrester · · Score: 1

As far as a basic work processor, yes there are many others but as far as Word not being the best option for businesses and they are using it just becasue, I have to disagree. For businesses that only use basic options, maybe. But there is not many that come close when it comes to things like complex mail mergings (Google can't do), integrating with VoIP systems for business contact integration. Tying to journaling in Outlook so you can see what contacts each document has been used with, etc. There are a lot of things besides cut and paste that businesses use that other systems don't offer...yet. Its not just because we are "stuck" and "don't know what is out there".

  2. I Test My Tech Employees on Testing IT Professionals On Job Interviews? · · Score: 1

I am a tech professional and I have hired many tech people who "sound" great in an interview and seem like they can do anything but when they start working, its all talk and book knowledge and are essentially useless for me so I have to fire and rehire which is very hard in education.

So I test all of mine now. As a whole, most tech guys aren't good in interviews so this gives them an advantage in my book since they can show off their tech skills and have a better chance of getting the job then their social skills alone.

I also get "Geek Squad" guys coming in with years of experience and they are the most cocky guys I interview. But after they fail a simple networking test, they tend ro really mellow out for some reason.

I don't feel that its unprofessional but this topic did make me stop and concider that because I had never thought about it before. But I do know a scienteist that worked for a government agency in the area and not only did she have to take a skills test to get employment, but also have to take one every few years to ensure they are keeping up. That's not unlike requring a CCNA to be kept up. I also know someone who applied for a networking job and they agreed to pay for him to take the CCNA and if he passed he got the job, failed he didn't. I don't see anything wrong with that.

  3. Comcast Bill Payment Is Crap on Pitfalls of Automated Bill Payment · · Score: 1

    Listen to Comcast's policy:

I had automatic bill payment setup at Comcast where they pulled my bill amount from my checking. One month I receive a bill with a bunch of late charges, fees, and they stopped my introductory rates. I called and asked how can I have late fees when you pull my money automatically? They said it didn't go through, must have been insufficient funds. I called my bank, money was there and there was no record they attempted an ACH pull.

I called Comcast back and told them and they said they show that they didn't make an attempt to pull funds and proceeded to say their policy is that they are not responsible for pulling my funds and it is my responsibility to call them every month before my bill is due an verify they they actually did it!! THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR FAILED ACH TRANSFERS EVEN IF IT IS THEIR FAULT!! Idiots!!!

I now use my bank' bill pay to pay all bills and don't allow anyone direct access to my checking.

  6. Ceiling Mounted LCD's on a Pole on What's On Your Tech Bench? · · Score: 1

I am in the process of updating my workbench at work and am about to purchase one of these: http://www.ergoindemand.com/monitor_ceiling_mount_ duo.htm. This will allow one pole to come down in the center of the workbench and place 1 - 4 monitors on it that can be swiveled to the user. I am going to purchase 2 monitors for it and point one each direction from the center. Then each one will have a 4 port KVM switch.

The other thing I use often is a laptop ide to standard IDE adapter. This allows you to put a laptop hard drive in a fullsize computer which is very helpful for troubleshooting and ghosting since laptops usually have slower processors and offbrand nic's.

We have been using them too. And they are a pain having to recalibrate all of the time. We mounted ours to the wall and projectors to the ceiling and now no more calibration. Works much better!!

  8. Re:Price? on Chalkboards With Brains · · Score: 1

We have about 10 of these in our district in Elementary and Secondary. The kids that are very intelligent are going to learn it whether on book, chalkboard, or interactive board. However, students with a learning disablity or just below level skills really have increased their scores and skills. They would tune out a teacher talking, but when she is splashing videos up, moving things around with just her hand, and having the students come up and work on it, they all are interested and learn.

Much cheaper than that. We have serveral and they cost around $2k. You do of course need a projector and computer, both these most schools have.

I just used them for the first time to update my home computer and was impressed. Their prices were cheaper than NewEgg and free shipping. The order also processed faster than NewEgg.
