Why *wouldn't* Microsoft want this? Think about it - if they allow linux to run on the Xbox, then the arguments about "I have a modchip because I want to run linux" is useless. It gives them more fire power in court when it comes to nailing people with mochips. Yes, it's a competing OS and they don't like it - but Microsoft is about one thing, MONEY. If they can gain one more weapon in the battle against modchips, this would be a huge one to have.
Yeah, and the kids from Columbine just shot up anybody in their way, and look what that accomplished... I'm not sure that's good advice, for several reasons:
1) His friends could come after you, or he could make it his mission in life to get you back. If somebody came up and hit me in the head with a book, they had better watch their back, that's all I gotta say.
2) Do you really want to be known as the crazy kid who went around kicking people's asses for no reason? I'm sure you wouldn't get a lot friends or dates that way...
Now, if the guy was messing with you and deserved it, hey, do what you gotta do. But, if you just pick out a random big-popular guy and kick his ass, then you got some big problems that only serious therapy can help you with.
Apparently, I'm thinking of the ram it's compatible with. From everything I've read, it will only work with DDR 333 when it launches, putting it far behind the P4 already. Granted, it may be dual channel DDR (if we're lucky), but I don't think the current design works with dual channel DDR yet, but who knows what they have cooking in the labs. I realize Hypertransport is being utilized in the new hammer line, and I do also realize we're not talking about the XP here.
Do you have some special requirement for AGP 8X? From every review I have ever read (and that's a lot), AGP 8X is simply a marketing thing. Nvidia and ATI hyped it all up, but the performance on the current GPU chipsets doesn't even require it yet, or even come close for that matter. You might be talking a 3% performance boost in some cases, so you're wasting your time trying to find a board with this requirement at this point in time. If I were you, I'd be more worried about finding a dual AMD solution with a 333 FSB, now THAT would get you some serious performance increases - running DDR 333 synchronously with an Athlon MP @333!
Yeah, I was going to say - I was pretty sure I've downloaded all my imap stuff before with Mozilla. Although, if you can't figure out how to do that for some reason, here's a very easy solution: use mozilla to create a bunch of folders on your local machine - then go into each folder, highlight every message at once - and drag it over to the local folder. Yeah, it's a bit more work, but if you can't make the easy way work for you for whatever reason, this method will definitely work with Mozilla, or Netscape 4.7X for that matter.
Has anybody stopped to think about their memory controller here? The current design of the desktop version of their 64 bit chip, whatever it's being called these days, has a built in memory controller on the chip itself, eliminating the need for one in a north bridge. Great idea right? Wrong. Intel will soon be moving to a 800 mhz FSB, while AMD's brand spanking new chip will be stuck at 333. Not so good. So, my money says that they are holding off the chip until they can come out with a 400 or even 533 FSB/memory controller on chip. Until they can do that, Intel will kick their butts all over the place on the desktop.
This may be slightly OT, but have any of you ever tried to replace a fan on a video card before? The big issue with Nvidia's new offering is that it is loud, etc - but I don't see that as the biggest problem. I have a case that's fairly quiet on the inside, and the only way I would notice that my video card fan died to is to take the side off and check, or notice that it burnt up. I have a Geforce 2 GTS, and when I did look inside my case, I heard a grinding sound and traced it back to my stupid VGA fan. This tells me it's about to crap out on me, and I need to replace it. I have a found a few good places on the net to replace the fans with, yet every OEM manufacturer of the graphics cards seems to use different methods of attaching the fans. Some have pins, some just use adhesive (I think that's a major problem waiting to happen), and even if you do find a fan that works - the pins on it might not line up with the slots on your board. Oh, another thing - 9 times out of 10, even if I do find a fan that has little pins that line up with the holes on the board, I can't find one that also has matching power connectors. With my luck, I'll find one that has a 3 pin connector when I need 2, or vice versa. So, does anybody know of a good place to get VGA fan replacements for these ultra-hot running video cards???
Tomorrow, you'll see it for sale on Ebay. It would be a good, what, 4 or 5 hours before the good ol' Ebay sensor staff realizes it and takes it down. Plenty of time for it to switch hands!
For those us that don't know what services for unix 3.0 is, could you enlighten us? I'm now very curious what type of product M$ has produced that works with, or on unix.
Yeah, but if you forget to turn that switch off for Xbox Live, bye bye online gaming for you. M$ automagically bans you for life if you login while using a modchip. This is the problem with having a central online system like M$ does. They have TOTAL control of who can and can't play online - this is why I like Sony's approach much better, it's a like playing most computer games online with your PC. It uses the "internet" rather than a closed network and central servers for absolutely everything.
Man, if I had mod points to give you, I would. You're right on - how does the music industry know that I don't already OWN the cd if I download the song? They don't, and couldn't unless they get a warrant for my house and see the disc sitting on my shelf. Boy, that's a great use of our police tax dollars....
You're kidding me? DirecWay requires using a usb connection and *software*? Whatever happened to the days of running ethernet out of the back of these routers? I've seen a few comcast cable modems only set up for usb, and that's just nuts. Now this - I'm absolutely baffled that they would do this. I know someone getting this installed on Friday - so I am very interested in finding out ways to make this work with other operating systems or directly with a wireless router.
Another funny thing I see on websites written in php is the famous.inc whole. What I mean is, people will stick code in a file called whatever.inc. If you go to www.basilix.org, you'll see a very popular webmail program there. If you know another site that uses it - and you looked at the source for this app, you would then know the default names of the.inc include files, containing things like admin passwords, etc. When you would type that file in as a url, and apache wasn't told how to handle that.inc extension, you get all their variables spit out on screen... not a good thing. So, a lot of people really should set up apache (or whatever web server) to handle include file extensions as php, so you can't see their passwords, etc.
Sorry, but you're wrong - I suggest you read this. The important part for you to read:
" It concluded that the radio frequency signals emitted by phones generated heat in the brain, but said it was not clear whether this could have other biological effects, such as triggering cancer. "
When I said your head gets hot, this is what I was talking about. I doubt a tape player puts off enough raditation to heat your brain.
Yeah, I realize that microwaves are 2.4 ghz, etc. Cell phones are 1.9, yes. However, if there is proof that cell phones cause cancer, or some other awful problem - we haven't seen it yet. Does your head warm up when you're on the phone? Yes. Does it harm you? Don't know, and we might not know for some time.
Yeah, I agree - I mainly use my ps2 for ps2 games. However, every now and then I like to break out crash team racing since I haven't seen a game that's equally as fun come out for the ps2 yet. It has the mario cart feel, but for the ps1 console. It's a fun, non-violent game for kids. Also, I like to play Tekken 3 still - in my opinion, it had GREAT graphics and game play for the hardware it ran on. Yes, Tekken 4 may look better, but for some reason, I still think the game play on Tekken 3 is better. So, my point is, if the PS3 isn't backwards compatible, all the way to the ps1, it will lose major points in my book.
Yes, I have seen videos of flowing lava - but I assumed it was melting everything near or around it, until it had flowed long enough to cool down. Once it cooled, it stopped melting things around it, settled, and hardened. But then again, I'm drawing my conclusions from the movies.
Yeah, not only that - but maybe I'm nuts here, but is there anything that can withstand the temperature of molten lava? Seriously - what are they going to keep this in?? I would think their drill would *melt* as it got near the magma, but then again, maybe they are using some kind of super metal to do this.
Choice, really? The average consumer (this is me when it comes to printers) has no clue what kind of refills are available for a printer when they get it. I shopped around for a good printer with good quality printing for a good price. Nowhere at Best Buy did it mention how much ink would cost me at the time. The printer came with ink, so I was fine until it ran out... then I realized what a crappy printer I had based on price and the quality of the printer. The thing prints lines through images, and smears ink across other images. I have calibrated the damn thing, and it still prints horribly. I am about to throw it in the trash and do some more research on printers to get something affordable in the long run. Also, I'm not the kind of person who favors laws - I agree, I'd rather let the market sort it all out. Yet, I haven't seen Cannon, Epson, or anyone else charging a lot less for ink for the average printer. It's like all the printing companies are in it together because they know that's their bread and butter - ripping off the consumer when it comes time to refill their ink. I'd love it if someone could show me a good, solid printer that cost less than $10 to refill the ink in it. I mean, it's just ink people - it's nothing fancy.
Oh poor baby HP - can't monopolize the ink business anymore. Frankly, I think this is the greatest thing that could have happened to the printer biz - because like people are saying, they'd rather drop a few hundred on a printer and not have to spend a bloody fortune on ink all the time. My damn ink dries up before I can even use it, and my printer takes the 2 cartdriges, so they screw me over every time I need to print something. Trust me, ink competition in this market is a good thing. This would be like if you could buy a car for $100 and every time you needed gas, it cost you $500 and you could only buy gas from one company. It's just not right.

I'm no physicist, but I would have to agree with you here. My only question would be - in order for it to cause a small earthquake, how much Earth do you think it would have to go through? I only ask because if an earthquake was detected on the surface... let's say a few miles deep into it, then it could put off a lot of energy in only a few miles right? So, I would still think you would notice if it hit you... maybe that explains random muscle twitches every now and then as I sit and program. Or maybe that's the massive amount of caffine that I have ingested.
