How many kebab stores do you find in Paris?
How many McDonalds, KFC and Burger King (combined) do you find in Paris?
Not to feed an obvious troll, but the reason people hate McDonalds is not that they're American. It's because of what they and corporations like them are doing to the workforce, the environment, and our health. That's why people burn them down. Kebab shops, are not owned by multinational companies. They are locally owned, locally managed small businesses, and help the local economy by proving jobs etc. And the food is not that unhealthy either.
Dude don't say that, it's really kind of offensive to people who at some point or another HAD to leave their country. Even if you're not being tortured, or anything really bad like that, who wants to have the police hassle them on a regular basis, not be able to work in their chosen profession, etc. Just little things which make your life suck, when it really shouldn't have to.
I support everyones right to emigrate if they feel like they need to. Emigrés have also often been the deciding factor in overthrowing an oppressive government, in fact I'd say it's almost a prerequisite to have a strong expat community if you need to overthrow the government. These people need their freedom and ability to work, in order to help raise awareness about what is wrong with the way things are being run, and make changes. Someone being in jail for political reasons cannot really do much to change anything.
If it were not for the money, language, and responsibility issues, I'd move to a Scandanavian country in a heartbeat.
Don't worry about the language, at least not if you are qualified in IT. Nobody will care if you speak the language. Money? Not sure where you're coming from there. The ticket costs almost nothing, and as long as you get a job before you go, why do you need money? Responsibility issues I'm not sure what you mean by, though. Other than that, you're welcome. See ya.
Here's some reality. You have to be 100% pro gay or be classed as a hater. You have to be 100% zionist and pro everything israel does or you are a "hater" (that's a HUGE one in this society, go on, admit it) You have to be 100% pro ultra radical feminism or you are a hater. You have to either bend over and spread 'em with a smile on your face for clinton or bush or you are a hater. And so on.
As someone from "the rest of the world", I've always wondered about this. Why is it that the US is so in love with Israel? Being P C in my country involves all the other things you brought up, but certainly not supporting Israel -- more likely the other way around. Israel is mostly compared with South Africa during apartheid and has about the same level of respect (in fact, there's a lot to support that comparison, too. Think about it.)
The troops learn simple, common phrases in arabic but that's it. If you actually expect them to learn to speak or read it fluently, then you're expectations are completely unrealistic.
Why is that exactly, though? Some of them must have been there for years by now, how is it they have been completely unable to learn the language?
I remember the same thing happening while I was teaching English in Prague, 99 percent of the americans there simply couldn't learn czech, while a good 80-85 percent of the rest of us did. I spoke better czech after about 3-4 months than most of my american friends, regardless of how long they'd been there. Never mind how well the russians did, most of whom picked it up in weeks or at most a few months (their language obviously being much more similar, but still)
Being an american who spoke the local language was in fact considered extraordinary, and usually these people would be very well known in the expat community.
I have a feeling the soldiers would be more welcome and more accepted by the locals if they at least made a token effort to learn a little bit of the language and try to understand a little bit about local culture and values. Like, you know, read a few books published by iraqis for instance.
Actually, I appreciate the completely tasteless humor much more than the completely stupid serious comments on this. The humor recognizes and appreciates the absurb quality of all of this, and doesn't even try to propose a serious take on the matter.
Oh.. so is that why you wrote a funny comment, instead of a serious one?
1. Build something extremely nerd-friendly out of items found at Amazon.com 2. Create website explaining how to do it (complete with amazon referal links) 3. Submit website to Slashdot 4. ??? 5. Profit!
Because if they had used Windows:
1. They probably would have to pay Microsoft for product placement
2. Fill out tons of forms just to use the product on-air
3. Using something that wasn't Windows (and therefore unfamilliar with most people) looks "techier", or
4. KDE/Linux is free; why spend any more money than you have to?:)
More likely, Microsoft didn't want to pay them enough for them to get Windows in there. I think Apple has full time employees working just to put their products in as many films and TV shows as possible, and they pay money to do so, a lot of money I would suspect.
Why would it need to be doctored? These pictures look EVEN MORE like a face than the original ones that got everyone interested in it in the first place, not to mention a FUCKLOAD more than the later ones released to quiet the "conspiracy nuts".
Although I'm also inclined to believe it is simply rock formations, saying this will shut up the people who saw a face the last time around is just naive.
I have a feeling that geeks sometimes underestimate the skills of everyday computer users. Or maybe it's an age thing or something. As I've mentioned in recent stories of the same nature, I recently gave an Ubuntu install CD to someone who's never used linux before in her life, to replace her Win98 system. She installed it on her own, after burning her important documents on a CD. She then read some of the info stuff that gets shown after startup, had a look at the Examples included, took the little tour, and was off. I haven't heard a complaint since, and last time I was there she's even completely personalised her desktop, to the point of me not finding stuff on it, downloaded new themes (it's drag and drop themes in gnome these days FFS) and is generally mucking about with it and learning stuff every day. She originally wanted WinXP but had trouble with WGA and decided to give Ubuntu a go.
I'm suuure I'm not the only one to have had this happen to them in the recent past... For the people who didn't, maybe try to push it a little the next time someone wants you to help them remove spyware, or generally fix something on a windows install.
It might just work out fine for them and we have another convert. If not, they are more than free to go out and buy a new copy of Windows XP.
I totally agree. I put my girlfriends younger sister on Ubuntu a few weeks ago (well actually she did it herself I just gave her the CD), fully expecting at least some tech support calls, but she's been very silent, adding programs, surfing, writing stuff for school etc... no complaints so far at least.
If you've just got a copy of Windows on your machine you lifted from work or the net, I wouldn't worry too much. As that recent/. article said, Microsoft can actually make MORE money by allowing some piracy. It keeps kids with no cash from switching to Linux, for example. I've always felt MS has somewhat lax copying security on purpose.
I recently helped my girlfriends younger sister with her computer, which had become riddled with spyware and was running very slowly, sometimes not at all. She was running W98, but wanted an upgrade, so I got hold of a copy of XP which I got with my laptop (which I'm no longer running windows on). As soon as I booted it up though, it started talking about wanting to download upgrades. Since an unpatched XP would be just as bad as the 98, I tried to do it. Of course the Genuine Advantage shit kicked in and didn't let me download any of it, and it had spyware on it within (literally) a few minutes.
She is now happily running Ubuntu and hasn't had problems since. She did the installation herself and everything, it was easier than the XP one (which I did).
Thanks Bill!
Why is 1800 of 2000 trampoline accidents?

At its height, viewers sent America's Funniest Home Videos 2,000 VHS tapes a day, and at least 1,800 of those, it seemed, showed some kind of trampoline mishap.
Wouldn't that seem a bit high? What are all these people doing on trampolines? What am I missing here?
Nobody knows, they couldn't get wireless up and running on it.
Requests for testing have been sent to the guy in California who were rumoured to have gotten it running though.
On that note, any idea how I can get my very generic wireless card running under Windows. My ubuntu box (Dapper) recognises it at boot, but when I boot into my Windows partition I can't seem to get it to run, and since it's the only internet connection I have, it's a little bit frustrating. It's probably good for the security of my box but it would be nice not to have to reboot just to download some little thing I need or check email..
Seriously, I wonder how long it will be before a direct mental connection between Open Source and socialism develops in the minds of Americans. It'd be an easy weapon to deploy against Linux.
Seriously, I wonder how the direct mental connection between socialism and Spain developed in your mind.
I'm guessing they became socialist around the same time as they pulled their troops from Iraq?
Say that a Maxican drug cartel took up residence in a border town. For whatever reason, they got pissed at us, kidnapped two border partol officers, and started firing rockets at San Diego. And to top if off, the Mexican government turns a blind eye to it. What do you think the government would do? I sure as hell hope that we would send troops in there to stop it. Unless you want San Diego residents to live in a constant state of fear.
Well I do hope they wouldn't bomb Maxico City, just the border. Only Israel would bomb Beirut to get rid of Hezbollah.
A nation should not have to endure endless kidnappings of their soldiers/citizens without taking action.
Ah, but what then of the hundreds upon hundreds of Palestinian civilians stuck for tens of years in Israeli prisons without trial and without chance of release? Many of which are children, or women, or old? In fact just a few weeks ago Israel obducted a number of Palestinian elected officials, and never returned them.
Do they count too? 'Cause in that case, I say let us bomb Tel Aviv, Haifa etc into fucking oblivion. I'm serious. Let's do it.
Also I wonder why people would blame the US for this war. The US has an army of diplomats trying to encourage all sides to agree to a ceasefire.
Dude, do you have any idea how much money the US government and weapons industry is making right now? Do you think they made all those bombs in Israel? The US is making a killing out of this war, literally. And American diplomats are doing what they can to prolong the war, not end it. The rest of the security council want a resolution demanding an instant end to hostilities -- the US vetoes... who profits?
Well you could start by targeting Hizbollah, and not Lebanese civilians. This whole collateral damage talk is bullshit, they are actively trying to hit civilian centers, look at the targets for fucks sake! The only thing that will come out of this will be that the Hizbollah will be strengthened by the support of the Lebanese public, and by the support of people from other countries (not just Arab ones mind, talking to people here in Sweden, which is normally quite US-friendly (yeah yeah, US/Israel whatever you know what I mean) they are beginning to show more and more understanding for the actions and reasoning of the Hizbollah.)
As far as I'm concerned, the Hizbollah is now a freedom fighter guerilla like any other.
So that's probably why.

You're wrong, the vikings did it far earlier than that.

on pretty much all the computers. Does that mean we are cooler than these places?
I don't think it qualifies as Flamebait when he's got a source to back it up...

Something like this?
Anything less graphic is Israeli propaganda. This is what their so called self-defence looks like.

Coming from an american, that's actually quite scary. Please don't bomb Chile.
