One reason to have something you haven't paid for is to find out whether it's good. I often borrow books from friends and if the book is good enough I buy it myself, so I can reread it later. I do the same thing with games, I will download them and if I consider them worth the price I will buy the game. Many games, such as WoW, Oblivion, F.E.A.R., The Orange Box, I could keep on listing the games I've bought which I felt deserved my money AFTER I played them, some games offer trials and sometimes that is enough, but other times I want to get the feel of the whole game.
On the other hand why does someone have the right to tell me how I can use something I have purchased. I purchased a CD from the store, it is my property, as long as I am not making money from it, which is what I consider real piracy, then what is wrong with doing whatever I want with what belongs to me.
Looks like a lot of people in high places actually didn't read the article. spikedLemur is among those who didn't read the article or intentionally exaggerated it out of proportion...
When I was younger in a moment of anger at Microsoft I once exclaimed "I'm gonna write my own O/S one without any bugs at all!" to which my friend sagely replied, "So your not gonna let anyone write any software for it?" This is something to think about.
Soldiers maybe, the regular G.I. Joes. Those Special Ops people on the other hand, crazy as hell. My dad, he is in Iraq working for Haliburton, said one of them gave a speech where he pretty much thanked all the civilian workers for being there to help them kill all these men women and children.
He also mentioned that one of the most relaxed places to be around base was in the Special Ops buildings, so maybe they are not all bad.
Actually a rain gun could be fire so that the object arcs in such a matter as to follow the curvature of the earth, but depending upon the material used I don't think that is a possibility, especially since the air would create so much resistance....
This must be the first 'real' article about the history of AI in a long time.
Unfortunately I feel they started at the wrong end of the spectrum, if one wants to program common sense one must first start with the basics, not a knowledge database.
Seems more like they are not complaining about people learning Java as they are about people learning Java first. I suppose I can understand this as Java is what I learned first. It is what I took about 3 years learning in Advanced Placement Computer Science in my High School. I have to tell you, I have an excellent knowledge of loops, recursions, iterations, and many other basic computer science methods and terms. But seriously, what is a Pointer?
If there is one thing I know this article is right about, it's that I can learn plenty of Java and never be properly taught everything there is to know, but isn't that the point of learning something, knowing that there will always be more you don't know. Sort of, just because you have a lot of knowledge with Basic, C, C++, Java, and Pascel, that doesn't mean you know Python and Python is on the rise. So a Programmer has to start somewhere and just keep learning till he knows it all..
Totally offtopic... But I would hardly call BSD entirely dead. I just sold a near mint condition BSD OS/386 for 40+ on Ebay. That is 10 year old software...
I don't know about you but when something becomes rare enough it becomes alive in a whole new way.
Not only is the information often wrong, but the information it does has is very biased (which is OK - all information is biased, but you need to see the whole range).
Good thing you're going back to college.

Jury Nullification, if a panel of juries eventually decides you know what this has gone too far, we should be able to change things...

You of course realize, people reverse engineer software all the time, right?
