I very much doubt now Google has Market Dominance that they're going to sit back and relax like what Microsoft did with MSIE. This is definately not the end for new and innovative things, even if Google does take a 95% market share.
The major difference between the two is that while MSIE was only a tiny part of Microsoft's revenue, Google Search is a massive chunk of Google's profit. If Google loses it's search then they're pretty much screwed. They know if they don't keep innovating then the same thing will happen that is happening to MSIE right now, which is losing market share. And while this is a small problem for Microsoft, losing market share in the search engine stakes would be a massive blow for Google. If they're not the best, then they don't even have the "default install" bonus that MSIE has, they're in huge trouble.
Don't count on seeing an end on innovation in search if Google gets market dominance. It may slow down a little, but they couldn't afford to follow the footsteps of MSIE.
the reason there are millions of web pages that work on all browsers is because web developers have a hell of a time writing webpages that work on all browsers
if instead all browsers actually followed the standards, then there wouldn't be so many issues doing this. This goes for ALL browsers, even Konqueror and Safari, passing the Acid2 test does not mean compliance, the Acid2 test is only relevant for browser versions released before the test.

I must be special because I never really have memory problems with firefox (1.5). it's currently using 40 MB with 4 tabs open (I barely ever close it, I usually hibernate this computer). Explorer is using 27MB and I haven't even got a single window open.
also, I never experience firefox crashing, or any of the other issues people seem to have with it (although it does take a while to start up).
for a long time there was a theory about a planet inside the orbit of Mercury, due to an unexplained irregularity in the orbit of Mercury. Everyone was convinced there was a planet there, even calculated where it was and everything, until eventually Einsteins theory of relativity explained the whole thing and there was no planet.
For the record, at one AU distance, it would take the system 5.64701404*10^17 years for an orbit. That's like 10 order of magnitude longer then the sun's life span.
you might have to check your maths there. I haven't checked the validity of your other calculations but considering you let this whopper through I can probably dismiss them all as false, since it doesn't lend you much credability. Anyone with a basic grasp of astrophysics would know that an orbit at a distance 1 AU around our Sun takes exactly 1.0 Earth years to complete. It doesn't need to be calculated because we have a good example of this kind of orbit (eg. our planet).
Rotation time depends on the object being rotated around, not the object doing the rotation. Of course, when you're talking about a companion star, it's gravity is large enough to change this, however, because the gravitic pull between the two objects is greater, the orbit is shorter.
everyone needs to stop being confused about the issue here! we're talking about children accessing pornography, rather than starring in it. The term "Child Porn" is being thrown around a lot but that is not the issue at all.
nothing can be done about this, unfortunately. All the affirmative action bullshit is just trying to pass laws forcing people to hire women or black people. This is just as bad as the previous situation. Unfortunately, companies can never hire people based purely on their qualification anymore, every hiring has to have some sort of second agenda.
The only solution is for the perceptions of people to change. Kids growing up now shouldn't be exposed to this kind of crap because it gives them a view that this person deserves different treatement because they're black/female/asian/jewish. Affirmative action may have increased the short term job opportunities for minorities, however, I think it's done more harm for the long term than help. (interesting how so many people have classified women as minorities when they're actually the majority;)
If kids grow up in a world where no one is treated differently based on skin colour then they won't even notice the difference when they grow up. It's nothing that can be fixed in three years, but it's certainly a better goal than forcing companies to hire certain people.
In Australia only the caller is ever charged for both landline and mobile phones. Also I imagine the idea is landlines rental is cheaper however we pay per call. Considering how people use landlines less and less nowadays it's probably a better system =)
when you have 20 million people in a country the size of Australia it's expensive to connect everyone. Getting high speed Internet is expensive even with the recent introduction of ADSL2

I find that spam is still doing a decent job of destroying email, the amount of email that gets picked off by spam filters is incredibly high and oftentimes I've had legitimate messages filtered by spam filters, meaning I have missed out on important information. Due to spam, email is now no longer a reliable means of transportation, which I think is worse than having to delete a few spam messages every day.
Currently my account gets absolutely no spam, I have a second email account I use to sign up for stuff and funnily enough it gets no spam either. Spam filters may be getting rid of most spam but unfortunately sometimes they stop needed messages too. And the truth is so long as one person in a million responds to the spam messages then it's still worth it for the spammers
the skill to traverse a slalom, especially given the amount of traffic and some of the manouvres and corning you have to do on a daily basis: If you drive past a school during the 'school run', this in particular becomes a matter of life and death, but still needs to be done at speed in order to not be late.
wait... let me get this straight. You drive through a school zone, slaloming between students, but you do it at speed because you can't be late for your appointment? And here I was thinking of doing an exchange program in the UK...
yet people are going to treat it as an alternative and hack it so it keeps a distance of 3cm to the car in front of them. Just imagine, you're driving down the highway at 110km/h and there's someone 3cm behind you with his feet resting on the dashboard
if your RC car hits a pothole it's not going to shake you up or cause your index finger to involuntarily squeeze, accellerating your car dangerously into a fence or off a cliff. When you're in a car controlling it with your thumb any small jolts caused by poorly maintained roads are going to cause serious problems with your fine steering mechanism.
I'm with the grandparent here, you need a mechanism with a large input range and feedback.

This is very likely the same thing
for an object to rotate at a speed to be behind the sun all the time, it needs to be the same distance away from the sun as us
I have a feeling a sun that far away would be pretty noticable
There's no need to take the calculation for granted. You can work it out yourself. here's a hint: 1 AU = the distance from the Sun to the Earth
For the record, at one AU distance, it would take the system 5.64701404*10^17 years for an orbit. That's like 10 order of magnitude longer then the sun's life span.

Hell, I've been driving in Argentina, I'd rather trust a car running Windows...
