  2. Re:Last year's news, changes a long way away on British PC Tax to Replace TV License? · · Score: 1

Interesting info regards NTL... esp as I have just found out that they now own telewest "my ISP" that 100Mb..looks fun Just a quick update regards "If you receive British TV to your PC now by way of a tuner card you need a license" Taken from the licencing faq http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/gethelp/faqs.jsp Under the Communications Act 2003, you need a television licence to receive or record television programmes. This applies if they are received by a satellite, cable or land based transmitter. If you are watching any satellite service, controlled from within or outside the UK, you must have a television licence. You may have been informed, in the past, that a television licence was not required if you received television program services from outside the United Kingdom. This was changed in the Communications Act 2003, and if you are using your TV to receive or record television programmes broadcast by satellite from outside the UK, you are now legally required to have a TV licence. So in Uk even if I never have any means of accessing uk tv e.g. using foreign satellites only I still have to pay the theiving bbc. You could even take this to mean that I should have a tv licence just for have internet and a pc as I can get foreign tv on-line... which I think is just sick... Ok if I want to watch BBC yes I should pay, but I don't ... hence I refuse to pay

  3. And the costs on UK MPs Approve Compulsory ID Cards · · Score: 1

I've been semi following this id for a while over here and one of the reasons that it was not passed by the house of lords in the first time was due to the government refusing to give any accurate costings for the indivdual, but they were giving overall figures of total cost to implement and they were demanding it to be compulsory. At the time it was being priced by various economic specialists at anything from £100 to £399 per person.... thus it would cost me even more just to exist in the uk. Which concidering that I already have to pay for my driving licence, my passport etc and now on top I have to pay for a card with ALL my details etc on it. I find it VERY hard to trust the government when they say that all the economic experts are completely wrong and the card will "only" cost around £30 to £90

The latest with the "only for passports" is only for passports at the moment with the option for complete compulsory id to follow. This linked with the database that is going on including the dna database that is being built via the police (dna from anyone suspected of a crime is taken and kept regardless of whether guilty and they are even starting to do the same from victims of crime)

I am just glad that I can renew my passport next year 2007 before this comes in and then get the hell out of the uk

And please don't even start with the "but it will help in the fight against terror" The more you rely on one card and electronics to "prove" who someone is the easier it is to fake

  5. Re:Wicked Idea on Tagging Devices To Aid In Car Chases · · Score: 1

As it happens I have had sudden power loss resulting in the engine cutting out at various speeds (dodgy fuse box wiring that took ages to trace). Your engine stops being powered thus your car starts to slow, but due to the momentum the engine keeps turning over. It is less noticable that sticking the brakes on lightly. Also due to the drag of the non running engine it alone will bring you to a controlled stop even if your brakes fail (just not a quickly obviously). In some cases depending on speed etc the slowing of the car is not much worse than just taking taking you foot completely off the pedal.

You can always simluate this "carefully" by just turning off your ignition whilst driving....please only try this in a straight line incase the steering lock engages

When you start it checks on freedb to see if it reckonizes the cd and so far I have found it very good. Also if you have a cd that is not on their database you can submit it thus helping to keep it up to date. Or for editing mp3 you already have I use Moosic. Basic straight forward and can do batch converts, extracting from filename, freedb intergration as well and freeware again. Not the fastest but I can do 2-300 mp3 in a batch with no probs. www.bluecowmedia.com/MOOsic/ Hope this might help

After 6 months I was lucky enough to be refered to the eye dept in the local hospital (UK this is) and I was given sets of cards with excersises to do everyday and was told that either do them or end up with glasses for the rest of my life and my eyes would just get worse.
