It's all very strange while you think that Russia is Soviet Union. If you don't, on the other hand it's trivial - Russia is governed very differently than SU. There aren't James Bond-style KGB agents that can get anyone they want. Russia employs local warlords, or people pretending to be local warlords to manage troubled areas. Sometimes warlord do their thing.

First of all, German military capacity of that time was outstanding - they were far stronger than anyone else. Russian military capacity is nowhere near, say, British military capacity right now, and govt refuses to deal with that, so it'll stay low. Second, Russian politicians are nationalist, not fascist. There's no ideology of supremacy. Third, calling conflict in Ossetia a carbon copy of German occupation of Czechoslovakia is an insult to Czech.

There's no such problem. Chemical rockets are well tested and relatively cheap (unless their designers have screwed up). You can't get out of the gravity well for $10, live with that. The problems are mostly with what we lift - some space programmes are just pointless. Like project Constellation or ISS, for example.

And this gets modded insightful... Slashdot populace ain't getting better with time. Finland (unlike Sweden) would have a lot of use for that intelligence, because Finland, unlike, you know, Sweden, actually shares a border with Russia, and suffers from Russian crime (and vice versa, but let's pretend it doesn't happen). We don't hear about Finland snooping on Russia. We also don't hear about Sweden snooping on Russia and passing their data to Finland. What we hear is Sweden working as free intel service for US. In the end the result will be a pissed of Russia, and a warm smile from US administration. Truly an improvement of Swedish security.
