Both. I used to do tape but I'm involved with disk based backup now, with SSDs, 15k SAS drives and 7200rpm SATA. But disk based backup systems get full so you still have to offload old data to tape, hopefully to never touch it again. That means tape better be reliable, it's the last resort. Customer escalations because they can't read their data are no fun. The good thing is that low end tape libraries are dying out - the $5k ones that were bought by customers with clueless IT organizations. Companies that buy $200k+ tape libraries usually know what they're doing.
In large disk subsystems used for archival, the assumption is generally that >90% of the data is never read back. That's why they're heavily write-optimized. Now if we could determine which data isn't needed any more, we could store it on/dev/null.
Learn Perl first. Or maybe LISP. That way you'll get rid of the statically-typed mindset. Java/ECMAscript is Perl/Python in C++/Java clothes. Don't even think about C++ or Java. It doesn't work that way.:)
Exactly. Just modify the DNS on the servers so that every entry goes to a server in fbi.gov that says "Your computer is infected and here's how to get rid of that."
+1. That's exactly the problem and this puritanism is still embedded everywhere. It's the root cause of many issues, for example the stupid war on drugs, aka Prohibition v2.
I am a normal, rational person and I have no problems witnessing graphic sex acts in the library. Not shooting for Funny here, what's the problem unless children are around? Nobody forces you to watch that screen. Now if the volume is turned up I could see the problem.
Overzealous border guards are a typical sign of a totalitarian state. The last time I heard something like this happening was when a bunch of West German students were sent back at the East German border after making jokes. The only other place where this must happen regularly is at the South/North Korean border. Oh and I have destroyed many Americans too. At the Oktoberfest. Does that count?
California is levying carbon taxes on business and as you might expect, businesses are leaving California.
Which is only an issue in the right wing press and blogosphere. If you have a closer look the number of businesses leaving CA is minuscule and only noise in the statistics.
Imagine how much they'd have to raise rates if they had spent several billions on T-Mo. They'd have new frequency bands so they'd force everyone on a new contract with new phones, and new rates of course.
Mixing fresh water with brine releases quite a bit of energy as heat. Hence you will need at least that amount to separate fresh water from ocean water. Graphene might make that more practical than current membranes but it won't save energy. Energy cost is the big problem for desalination.

You don't know if you actually wrote successfully on today's disk drives either.

I'm embarrassed to say that I got it.
Tell that to the GOPers in congress.
Counteracting the deflationary tendencies is exactly what the Fed does by printing money.
All the pr0n on my HD is rot-26 encrypted. I feel so guilty.
Or get a Raspberry Pi. You don't need a radio on your simulator.

Auction off every seat publicly. Why use the big detour via PACs->campaign ads->voters??? It's inefficient and reduces transparency.

I think they just did what their software told them to do.

For the same reason we have TV aimed at children.
In my office environment I often wish I was deaf, which is why I prefer working from home.
You should have clicked OP's .sig before typing that.
Ah, that sounds just like the economic theories of a large part of the populace.

They pay them anyway, now they run elections? Why bother with this voting thing at all?
Did you notice that it's a 173MB preview?

Pollution is destruction of property, destruction of property is a civil or possibly criminal crime.
