Am I the only one who noticed that the FSB speed on the AMD wasn't mentioned, and that the RAM settings were 2-2-2/1 for AMD and 4-4-4 for the Intel?
Call me cynical, but I would think that they could have found 2 boards somewhere that would have let them use the same RAM and FSB settings.
Actually I have seen better help screens on the games that come with FC4 than with a lot of commercial software. Not only is it actually there & indexed properly, the person who wrote it usually did so AFTER writing the game, not sitting in some glass box on one side of the building with the initial specs while someone else writes the code on the other side of the country.
I had a similar problem, I was told repeatedly that it wasn't really happening and/or it wasn't a problem.
I went a step farther & mailed each and every log along with a daily summary to the comcast NOC,the tech, the supervisor and a few other people.
I was, of course, ignored until the node itself failed a week later.
It would be legal under the guise of their TOS.
Most if not all ISP's have 2 things in their TOS:
1) there is no garuntee of service quality or throughput levels. If you get dropped packets but have a stable connection there is no problem from their POV.
2) They reserve the right to filter trafic in order to meet business needs. RCN blocked incoming port 80 calls following the Code Red virus. Several ISP's block ougoing mail not directed through their mail server in an effort to keep themselves off the blacklists.
There's more risk of OSS being called on IP violations. YOU CAN SEE THE CODE!!!!!!!!
MS has been sued how many times now for IP violations? - and that's with people having to either "steal" the code or sue to see it.
Unfortunately, I do see more IP challenges to OSS in the future. On the up side I also see those challenges being handled by the OSS community with rapid patches to remove the problem - unless it's something like BT sueing over links.
I'm sorry, however the use of your storyline is not covered under copyright.
However, had you chosen to patent it, you would have a case.
Have a nice day.
It shouldn't invalidate the patent, but the scenario should create an 'implied liscence'. It was there, you knew about the infringement, you did nothing -> you implicitly gave your permision to do so.
However not sure if this applies, NTP has been suing RIM for years & started shortly after RIM started operating in the US.
As a former employee -3 no 4 times I think - their business model is fairly simple -
Residuals on subscription purchases - Comcast, Verizon, Sprint, Direct TV etc.
High margins on accessories - batteries, cables, adapters
Low margins on core - TV's, Stereo EQ, PCs.
Items like a battery have 300-500% markup on them. A TV will show about 5-12% profit margin if it's not on sale - Sales are actually a frequent loss on the big items.
The goal is to sell at least 2 accessories with any purchase - sell a TV, try to do a remote, batteries, and if possible, a home theater system.
Surprisingly, in order to stay employed there you have to take a test relating to all the little bits in the back, but I have worked with 2 managers who couldn't tell you what rosin core solder is.
I could have used this. I get confirmations of orders through web sites & I needed to save the page.
I found a PDF print driver that saves the printed page as a PDF & I upload that file to the server and store the filename in the data-base.
So yes there is a use for a single-file version of a graphic heavy page. - And for my use, this may or may not be a better solution depending of size/compression etc.
Sadly, I have an answer for that...
1) dig a shallow hole large enough for both coconuts and just an inch or 2 deeper.
2) take the tops off both coconuts.
3) fill 1 coconut with whatever unfiltered water you have.
4) put both coconuts in the hole
5) Cover with banana leaf
6) place a stone large enough to bend the leaf over the empty coconut.
7) wait.....
8) drink fresh condensed water from 2nd coconut.
improvisation on the standard survival techniques.
one of the few things I learned in boy-scouts, besides how to swear. Some times I think they should check that at least 1 scout leader isn't ex military.
Actually, I am using XMMS for my video playback.
After I dug up a package of dll's and codecs - I don't recall from where - I can watch a wider variety of feeds on my 700mhz PORS (Pile Of Recycled Scrap) linux box than I can on my W2K box with all the updates I can find.
I also like the playlist features and the control panel.
Nice idea but boiling water (100C/212F) won't kill most bacteria in 5 minutes.
Steralizing is usually done via steam at 2atm( 250-275F IIRC) for 15 minutes. Plus it doesn't remove contaminants. Mud + heat = dryer mud.
Most of the water purification systems use either an evaporation/condensation cycle or reverse osmosis through a semi-permiable membrane.
Of the 2, evap/cond is both more reliable and more scaleable. As a bonus, you can literally do it with 2 coconuts and a banana leaf.

it's a live CD for recovery/backup purposes - should work on any PC with a CD rom - supports network filesystems also.
I havn't used it, but if you check google, there are quite a few projects built around a live CD concept with HD backup tools .
Just to point out something that almost everyone is ignoring -
The unfiltered results for google.com are still available - when & in whatever condition the post government-filtered pages would have been.
The existance of google.cn is strictly ancilary. From TFA - 98% of the searches originating from China are requests for CHINESE - as in hosted inside China - sites.
* The self censorship for sites is going to be much higher inside the Chinese firewall than out.
* Google.cn is supposed to NOTIFY you if they filter something.
* Google.com is still available.
* Google.com search results are themselves sometimes filtered.
* Sites lacking violence, Porn, and political content are not filtered.
Let's see where this leads us:
* 98% of Google.cn searches return results principly for content that is already self censored by the site
* Google.cn searches which would have returned results subject to filtering, will notify you of that fact.
* Knowing there is a filtered responce, you can still use Google.com to find the filtered URL.
* Having the Filtered URL, in most cases you are still prohibited by the ISP filtering software from viewing it.
What is the net result of this? - Better overall service for Google's Chinese customers.
Google get's access to 105 million broadband customers - expected to grow to 250 million customers in a few years - and can provide Chinese users with rapid, clear, and relevant searches. In addition, by controlling the filtering, they can clearly identify to thier users that some results have been selectively removed (and what type of content (political, sexual, violent) triggered the filtering - although I don't know if this is being done). Are they bowing to political pressure - sure - EVERY COMPANY DOES whether it's EBAY in France, or AT&T in the US - it's the price of doing business. The difference is that they are NOT degrading their service. Google.com(Chinese) is still available. Google.cn is just better for local results - just like google.fr is better for French users, and google.uk is better for UK users.
Hmm risk taking.....
4 years ago, my father landed an account for mfg steel mill eq - est cost $24M US. Profit Margin 60% -> $14.4M US
Last year, post buy out by another company, his plant made ~$46M US sales. Profit Margin 15% -> $6M US.
This year - another buyer with virtually identical deal - $24 - $30M US of equipment w/ 60% margin. Turned down because it was 'too risky to devote half a year to 1 customer'.
Crist, you can almost get 100% cost overruns and loose 50% of the sale and still match last years numbers - where exactly is the risk in this situation?
[sarcasm speach:'accent=southern']
You, sir,
Are obviously not right in the head.
It quite clear to anyone with half a brain that, while sex and violence are both base examples of our animal instincts, sexual activity is clearly more damaging to the youth of society. Should Johny, say, shoot and rob his next door neighbor, the neighbor will be dead and Johny in jail - thus society is safe.
However, should Johny and Missy find a convienent haystack in which to frolic, why, there is no end to the damage which might be done to society. For should they take enjoyment of their illicit act, they may go forth and spread this vile thing called sex to all of the youth of the community.
And thus it is clearly shown that sex is much more damaging to society.
[/sarcasm]
I HAVE IT
CDs are like particle waves.
CD's obviously have 2 mutually exclusive, but simultanious behaviours - just like photons.
If you do the math one way, photons are a wave. Use different criteria, and poof they are particles.
CD's are no different, we substitute law for math, liscense for wave, objects for particles, and CD's for photons.
The result: if you do the law one way, CD's are a liscence. Use different criteria, and poof they are objects.
WHOOT - PATENT TIME: Quantum Law.
Now if I can only work out a theory of relativity that shows how software is relavent to patents...

Apples in elementary schools - check
Apples in High Schools - check

Apples in business - nope
Apple tried it in the 80's, and what they found out was business didn't care what you were used to. Meat fresh from campus is low enough on the totem pole to be ground up and spit out if they don't like what the business is using.
The only reason Apple took over the graphics industry was because it was orders of magnitude better than DOS & WIN3.1 for doing the work. 'Business' work - word processing, spreadsheets, etc. no gain - no change.
The problem with requiring enforcement is that you have to prove when the patent holder knew there was something infringing. Just because I suspect RIM has violated my patent does not mean I have enough grounds to enforce it.
Not really, I file with the govt & courts saying I believe RIM is violating my patent number 12345 subsection 5 because their product does [this]. I have just attempted to enforce my patent. Even if I am wrong, I have shown I intend to regulate the usage of my patented idea.

Better yet they could do what MS did & outsource this to India. Took me 45 minutes to register a copy of XP over the phone.

not likely, but since I was not directly involved, I though I would include the particulars instead of the more vague 'someone I know'.
