As i understand it the wobble technique is used because directly imaging low intensity light sources like these is extremely difficult when you have a giant hot star in the immediate vicinity. it would be like to distinguish a single LED attached to the side of a searchlight. so they use the indirect method of measuring the position of the star as it is moved by the orbiting body.

everything that has temperature > 0 emits light at some wavelength, we just have a bias for calling the human visible spectrum "Light", the infrared spectrum "Heat", and the shorter wavelength emissions names like "x-rays" and "ultraviolet rays". it's all the same phenomenon.

while i was looking for the paper referenced above I also found an earlier paper that probably drew attention to this particular pair of planemos. it doesn't appear they were aware of the binary configuration at the time. it can be found here

when it's all about hack and slash and well rounded groups, you the player have skillz, your toons are just tools.

additionally, these technologies will never be used to replace chemical rockets. chemical rockets throw a lot of mass out the back at a relativly slow speed, but all at once. giving you enough velocity to get off the planet.

ion thrusters throw a very little bit of mass out the back at very high speeds, but run continuously for months/years. after that length of time at a constant acceleration you end up with a very high velocity.

unless you have discovered some new physics and an antigravity engine, throwing things out of the back of the spaceship, or hauling it up an elevator are the only conceiveable methods of getting something off the planet.

I started hearing about modafinil last year and have looked in to it a few times since then. i too have heard the stories about staying up for days on end etc. i finally got a hold of some a few weeks ago and did a bit more research and tried it out.

modafinil was originally being prescribed to treat narcolepsy, though now prescriptions for ADD and shiftwork sleep disorder are common. the marketed effects are that modafinil "promotes wakefulness." modafinil is not a amphetamine type stimulant. from the published studies that i could find, the effects are not really dose dependant, 200mg is a standard dose and doesn't seem to be any less effective than 800mg in trials. most ADD type drugs take a while to build up in your bloodstream so i started with 200mg.

after three days i never felt jittery nor did i have the urge to stay up all night i just went to bed at my normal hour. in fact it felt like not much at all was happening. so on the fourth day i figured i'd test out the stay up for days thing. i took 600mg spaced out throughout the day 200 in the morning, 200 in the afternoon and 200 around midnight. this was the first time i noticed any effects, and the effect was an absence of fatigue but not stimulus, i ended up going to sleep after about an 18 hour day.

i guess you could stay up for long stretches at a time but the truth is i got bored (which is really divergent from the effects of amphetamine type drugs, those keep you awake and make even really mundane stuff focus grabbing.) i think i slept for about 6 hours after that and woke up without feeling groggy.

following that adventure i kept up the 200mg standard dose for a few more days, still never stimulated like adderal or caffeine, but i did notice that i didn't really get worn out, no afternoon lull, and no crashing off the drug. all in all i'd say modafinil will remove the bad effects of staying up too long but doesn't "boost" anything. i don't think i'll be seeking out a refill, like just about all the other mind drugs, the "benefits" even if they outweigh the disadvantages, just aren't all that beneficial.

  9. What's the problem? on Eric Schmidt on Net Neutrality · · Score: 1

it's true, there is a growing problem of network congestion in the major providers networks. it's true that content is getting more bandwidth intensive. what the telcos aren't speaking up about is that the reason this is a problem is that they intentionally oversell their capacity. ie when they sell 500 6mb dsl lines in your neighborhood they most certainly do not maintain a 3 gigabit link to the dslam. these companies are having their markers called in! they have made promises to you that they had no intention of keeping, and now facing the high cost of upgrading their networks to the promised capacity are looking for a sneaky (and in this case: Profitable!) way out. it's a whole lot cheaper to fill a campaign chest than run more fiber.

  10. hopping on the traffic analysis bandwagon on How Do Businesses Scale Their Bandwidth Needs? · · Score: 1

I have to agree with the traffic analysis group, there's just no way email and websurfing can be eating up all your bandwidth. bittorent and streaming audio can easily bring a WAN link to it's knees. unless you have some sort of bandwidth intensive app that is scaling with your business, you just need to cut that traffic out! it's not worth the added expense. you can get cable or satelite music services for a lot cheaper than an additional t-1!
