Just Buy the Friggin CD ALREADY!!! And encode it to whatever format you want and play it on whatever player you want!!! All you who cry about DRM are just a bunch of theives anyways! Who cares about DRM. If i want illegal nonDRMed free music its called BitTorrent not iTunes. If i want legal nonDRMed music its called an AudioCD. If I want instant legal music to play right away its a DRMed AAC file from iTunes. If your player doesn't support DRMed AAC buy the see above examples on how to get an MP3!!!! What is the big f'n deal? There are plenty of options out there people!

  2. Load Balancing on Web Censorship on the University Campus? · · Score: 1

I went to a State School in Ohio, I still live in the city where i went to school and i have many clients that are affiliated with the University. When i was in undergrad 99-03 the nework was flat out open. No blocking or anything. Once P2P starting going rampant they tried blocking a few P2P ports like Napsters and such but once there were so many flavors and work arounds it was useless so they stopped blocking them. They would never stand for blocking any information on the internet b/c its more of a headache than its worth, and in the end does it really matter? We're all adults here. In the past 2 years they've updated their campus infrastructure and routers. Now to curve bandwith so everyone has a zippy connection they do bandwidth prioritization. Where the main offices/classrooms/buildings get bandwidth priority durring the day and then after 6 or so it goes to the dorms. The dorms have bandwidth durring the day thats still pretty darn fast they just do more load balancing then they used to and this has kept everyone happy. These are just my experiences. I will say that a CS prof i know was researching bandwidth traffice and stuff at the university and lets just say the top hits on the nameservers and incoming traffic were for porn sites. lol Cheers

Hey guys don't you know that every "HD" signal you currently see is compressed? Infact it's even compressed with a lossy compression when its recorded to tape from the HD camera. Unless you're taking an SDI out cable directly into a Hard Disk Recording system and hardly anyone does that. Why is all HD compressed? 1 1080i uncompressed stream runs 165MB/sec ....do the math ;) and even though its compressed it looks pletty good. One of the widest formats used with cameras and editing/storing is the DVCPRO HD Codec, Panasonic who is the current leader in HD cameras uses it with their VariCam setups. Sony uses a mixture of formats which in my opinion has hurt their market share...what else is new. At anyrate everything is captured edited and outputted using compressed HD. Then its recompressed to be broadcasted either using MPEG-2, MPEG-4 or .H264, most people suffer quality loss from dropped packets durring transmission rather than compression artifacts. JPEG2000 has a less noticable compression than the other formats it actually uses a higher data rate than the other formats (which is good) however I'm surprised they didn't go with a .H264 standard which may be better because you can get similar quality with a smaller data rate. This may confirm apple rumors about a "wireless video Jobby" similar to what Aiport Express is for audio. Since they're already pushing tv shows and it's known they are wanting to start pushing movies. Granted 2 generations of compression/decompression isn't great but you're really not going to notice it especially at 1080i. and remember HD-DVD and Blue-Ray are also using compressed HD video formats wether it be WindowsMedia, .H264 or MPEG2 so stop all your Compression whining very few people have seen pure uncompressed HD....well except maybe at the movie theater...but thats film and it looses a generation going to analog....you still have film grain, dust and scratches. :) looking forward to what apple is going to do with it all.

Having used both Mac and Linux. I've come to this conclution. Linux is powerful. Mac is powerful. But lets face it guys when was the last time you had to stay up all night getting an freakin program installed on a Mac?...that wasn't open source "cough". Linux works well as a server not a desktop and even then a simple sudo yum update on a production box can blow away the config files you spent 4 days setting up don't say you've never had any "simple" problems with linux also there not even one server management package that comes close to Apple's on Linux. Here is the way i look at it say you want a barn. You have two options you can buy one that is already made and start using it the way it was designed start being productive or you can build one which you may not know exactly how to so there's alot of stuff to learn and figure out before you're ever able to use it. There's an infinite amount of ways you can build it which has its benifits and disadvantages. Main disadvantges being time and energy. Apple has its "way" of doing things, because of this it is easier to control what you are able to do. When you have control you have stability. Now some of you may say blaaaa thats why we use OSS. Everytime i've gone to do something on a mac there's hardley ever a better way to do it than their way. WHICH WORKS!! at any rate some how i'll suffer through my Quad G5 with 8gigs of ram and my 30" Cinema Display with my working NVIDIA graphics card drivers......ohh pooo i wish i could have a fancy linux box :-P Pile of wood or Amish construction!!

I have a studio, I shoot professionally every day. I run aperture on a Quad G5 with 8gigs of RAM it has been the best peice of image management software to date. The workflow is increadable. Yes the raw quality isn't as good as adobe's Camera Raw but adobe's wasn't as great in its first version either. The quality is 95% there. Yes there were some bugs and with any new software a learning curve (which scares most people) but honestly everything runs fine for me and it has cut my post production time and image management time 75% Also when i bring clients in i can whip photos around on two apple Cinema Displays with ease make selects in 15min normally, and there's the wow factor of images flying around (clients like blinking lights and razzle dazzle). What apple "Did" with their team is what apple does. Makes the best software availible bar none. This isn't for this article but lets face it they make the best desktop system bar none. They don't settle for 95% they settle for 110% (10% being the extra things they invented that you need but didn't know you needed untill they showed them to you). I personally think fireing it had a lot to do with the level of hardware needed to run it lets be honest how many times have you programed something and it chokes on your parents 5 yo comp but runs perfectly on yours. At anyrate if you buy a new $5k~20k camera every 2~3 years you can pony up for a Quad G5 to get the job done.

Mac just works better in the first place. If you say you want to be able to run windows just for the option to who cares about the option when you can do anything you want is OSX.
