i did that when IE 7 first auto installed . The Uninstall dose NOT fully remove ie7. 7 broke h&r block Tax Cut , and visual studio.net and they were still broke after uninstalling 7 . I was forced to do a full reinstall of xp to fix it .
i run a duel boot xp and Fedora 8 --soon triple Gentoo
seeing as the MS windows installer DOSE NOT SEE MY FEDORA 8 INSTALLATION and will gladly( Very,very gladly) reformat my ext 3 HD to ntfs . The M$ installer thinks that there should be ONLY ONE and ONLY ONE os on a box
why bother buying one in the first place . Use your old or new box as a LAMP server edit the httpd.conf to only allow user/password from friends and family( or as a normal server ) and be done with it .
when www2.adhost.com tries to call home and put an add into the web page i am reading , mozilla will loop back to me and when the add is not found skip it and go to the next. That one also will not be found
So the upshot is no adds are displayed from the 16,070 add servers in the hosts file
I'm logged in with Mozilla-SeaMonkey with Add Block Plus,and i see no adds
but seeing as my hosts file is 602.9 KB ( ex. 127.0.0.1 www2.adhost.com )

just my 2 cents but start by getting active on the programs ( web site,forum,mailing list)
for example i have been doing maps for Celestia for 3+ years and some minor debuging
find a program you use and LIKE and go from there
I use boath Stellarium and Celestia,even make maps for Celestia.Boath of them are Great bits of programing and , for me a must on my fedora box ( even on the M$ hard drive )
This is why i run Fedora 6 , and only use MS for the 3 games i like and the 1 in-painter program I use.It runs on the nvidia gpu and the cpu and is written in.net .
at times while DLing a video (bitTorent)thay are not always labeled correctly, so part way through i will have mplayer play what is there .
And low and behold it is the wrong vid . I then run sherd or srm , in bash and it's gone .
this would be VERY illegal, and a bad idea
for me i much prefer to type in the Admin. account password when ever i type in "su".instead of allow or deny . That way I [and I alone] know that i am in superuser mode . And in that mode I know not to do anything STUPID.

i am not even sure the hardware will handle windows 98 let alone a watered down win xp

well they are working to add ODF to word 2007 see http://sourceforge.net/projects/odftranslator/ so who knows !!!
