I grabbed a cheap A3 last fall and then started grabbing some of the B1G1 deals that Amazon and other places were running. When the ax fell in January, I sat back, took stock and realized that with the money I'd spent on the player and about 20 movies, I'd barely have been able to buy the cheapest BD player. I'm not buying any more HD DVDs (mostly because I have most of the ones I wanted), but I did just order an Xbox 360 add-on for $50 so that I can rip the HD DVDs that I do have. I'll most likely pick up a BD player sometime this fall (Black Friday?), but for the moment, I'm enjoying a ton of great movies for what I don't consider to be a whole lot of money.
Sorry. Busy day at work. The Verizon page with directions on what to do doesn't allow any sort of direct linking, but you should be able to find it or something pointing to it by googling "verizon dns redirection". Basically you change the last octet in the DNS address to 14 instead of the default 12 (my post saying change it to 42 earlier was incorrect).
You're right. I didn't say anything at all. But I did change the DNS addresses on my machines so they ended in.42 instead of.12 like the help page said to do. Now I get "proper page couldn't be found" messages instead of a yahoo/verizon lookup failed page.
And don't forget that the blank BD media only runs about $15-25 a piece, too. That coupled with the hardware costs for the drives means you'll probably average about $30-40 a pop to replace a $25 disc. Good deal!
Which is almost certainly illegal (shame no one has been sued yet).
Under which laws? And in what countries specifically? Or are you referring to some international laws or agreements? If you're going to make a bold claim like this, you need to have something (anything) to back it up.
Unless some awesome fantastic tv series - *hint* FIREFLY */hint* - gets released to Blu-Ray I'll be a late adopter of the format.
IIRC, Firefly was shot on film, which would benefit from an HD release. However, due to budget constraints, the effects were only done at SD resolutions, which may not look so good in HD. I don't have UniversalHD, so I couldn't tell you how good it actually looks--I'm just recalling what I read somewhere.
Does it support 1080p? I've been tempted to get a HD-DVD player mainly to use as a DVD upconverter. I'll be watching for the HD-A30 to go on clearance.
Newegg put the A20 on sale for $100 a few days ago. They're out of stock, but if they get any more in it's a good deal. However, it's somewhat doubtful that they'll get any more since it's the older model. Doesn't hurt to add your name to the notify list, though.
Except that the Blu-ray specification is such a mess that there is exactly one Blu-ray player on the market that is worth buying as it will be properly compatible - the Playstation 3.
And even that one isn't feature-complete with regards to the audio codecs that BD supports. To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a single BD player out there that supports the full range of options that are in the BD spec.
That's the "nice" thing about the different BD profiles--the manufacturers get to keep "updating" their player lines while keeping the price the same. This year at CES, they updated the players to profile 1.1, but kept the list prices the same. Next year, they'll update the players to profile 2.0, and the prices will stay the same (they might come down 50 bucks or so). I'm waiting for a sub-$200 profile 2.0 BD player, too, but I'm not holding my breath.
If any of you have a blue LED (like those found on keychain or pen lights), you can fairly easily see the pattern of dots on a color laser printout (like anything printed in color from Kinkos).
Nobody's saying they should hire a designer to be on staff. We're simply saying contract the design work out. And I'm saying work with the designer to get an idea of why he's making the decisions he's making. By doing that, our AC sysadmin friend up there will likely be able to do basic maintenance to the site as needed, and maybe even add a new page or two from time to time.
Logically, if nothing could survive in the antarctic, then any expedition would be doomed, no? The mere fact that they are planning to go (and return) proves that things can be expected to survive out there.
I'm not sure why I'm responding to such an idiotic post as this, but here goes. They're looking for self-sustaining life in this Antarctic lake. I can guarantee that the scientists would die up there if we didn't send them along with food and fresh water.
I think the article is perfectly clear on this--methane would be a waste product (or by-product) of any extremophiles living there (note that they haven't actually found any yet). If life there consumed methane, a different chemical compound would be given off as waste.
The potser is asking to learn over a long period, and to start with something small.
That's the thing - from the sound of things, this job isn't small as it might seem. If it's a single page internet billboard for the company, then yes, do it yourself. But since he's asking about accessibility, that makes it sound like it's a fairly thorough site, which will have several different (but complementary) styles depending on the section the viewer is in. This is a job for a designer. Now, that said, work closely with the designer and try to learn what you can about design from them. Ask questions about placement of elements and color choices. If the designer is worth a damn, he should be able to explain the design theory behind his decisions.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was RIAA-style math. What it possibly means is that the pharmaceutical industry would make an additional $60B a year if people took all the pills they're supposed to. But since people forget to take some of them, pharma considers it "lost revenue".
The poor Russians don't have Tivo yet?
Some Best Buys have them on clearance. Just got back from mine, but they're still at $239 each. : (

Alright Mister Smartguy, how exactly do you spell IQ?

Yup. I noticed Verizon doing this a couple months ago. It didn't even cross my mind to submit it as a newsworthy story, though.

Phew! Good thing I wasn't planning on using my keyboard for that.

from the missed-their-saving-throw dept.
I guess Gen Con failed the saving throw.
Yeah, we got the joke the first time.

Don't forget the Australians!

I know what you meant. I was just playing around...
My color laser printer (Konica-Minolta 2530DL) only prints the yellow dots in color mode.
Oh yeah, well my printer can print yellow even when it's in grayscale mode! *rolls eyes*
If any of you have a blue LED (like those found on keychain or pen lights), you can fairly easily see the pattern of dots on a color laser printout (like anything printed in color from Kinkos).
Is it my imagination or does MS seem more and more like a software organization that is out of control?
The problem is clearly your imagination. MS has a complete and total grasp on the situation. Their sales rep told me so.
