I just went thru 4 days of compiling/recompiling kernels to get my new CD-RW working under Linux because the braindead software that came with it refused to burn a "*.tar.gz" file. It complained that there were too many ".'s" and insisted on converting the first one to a "_"!
I perused MANY HOWTO's/Sites/dejanews posts before I finally got mine working (and I've been using Linux/compiling kernels since 1994!) I've had similar problems getting my Hauppage TV card, printer, and Diamond Stealth II G460 video card going under 2.2.x. I'm currently roughing out a series of webpages under a working title of "It Doesn't Have to be This Hard" that will, hopefully collect all the info I needed to get these "odd duck" pieces of hardware going into one place. A lot of it was painfully obvious one I figured it out.
I'm starting with the CD-RW... email me if you think I can help. (Am I gonna need a new ISP tomorrow?)
The third way works if you've got a decent amp/receiver. Connect a fairly hefty wire (NOT speaker cable) from the ground terminal on the back of the amp/receiver to the same ground your cable compnay is using. (A water pipe will usually work as well).
And if you're living in an older (early 60's or before) house, try flipping the plug on your amp/receiver.
I agree. One of the first things I do in _any_ installation is change my xterm (rxvt, whatever) font defaults to rk24 (Sony misc, I think). Are there any better looking monospaced fonts out there? (And I don't mean Courier; I think it looks particularly ugly on a monitor!)
Any graphics design gurus out there into typeface design? How about a good looking monospaced typeface for monitors called 'Linux'?
So is the article about IDG's findings real, or just another 4-1 post?
Irresponsible...
You guys (all sites involved) need to re-evaluate your position in the "community".
"Byte's" been doing this for years, but it was expected.
I was genuinely concerned about "Userfriendly".
"April fool" is all fine and good when it occurs on April first; it's not _AT ALL_ funny when it starts before April 1st, and seems to affect our dearly held "rights" of free expression (speaking as a USA citizen).
I'm disappointed with ALL of the sites that participated in this particular 'hoax'..We've enough 'GENUINE' threats to our platform of choice that we shouldn't have to worry about 'fake' challenges.
The last six months have been pretty good for those of us using OSS/Free software, mainly because of spokesman like ESR, et al. He makes several good points here.
I dropped down here to read comments about how MS killed a demo and, after wading through several dozen posts, find nothing but discussion about 'moderation'.
I'm finding it hard to believe that all the 'discussion' about the new 'moderators' is relevant to the article I just read. Shouldn't these have been 'scored down' so that I would only see posts about MS blocking the demo?

Funny, lynx says it's running on Microsoft-IIS/4.0.
That's open source now?

I, for one, am glad he's sticking around.
Go plug a few for me, Eric.

My $.02
to break ranks.
I figured it'd be Emachines, given their favorable refund policy.
I'd have thought Dell would be one of the last!
That crack in the dam just keeps gettin' bigger!
I've been disconnected 3 times in the last 5 minutes with "Server too busy" errors!
Not "Net Congestion" errors.
Go Rob, you lucky dog! Wish I was there.
must be one hell of a cook!!
