it would be extremely trivial for such a compromised phone to broadcast and infect all XBox 360's within range
A browser exploit can cause a phone to spontaneously sprout limbs, open your 360, connect itself to the JTAG header, and perform the NAND dumping and flashing nonsense currently required to run unsigned code? That's one hell of a phone!
Ooh. Nokias are real nasty. You've gotta respect the Japanese. They know the way of the samurai.
BTW Windows Mobile has had multitasking for a long time as well. Microsoft took it out of WP7 because? Maybe because IOS didn't do it and they wanted to copy IOS?
Or maybe they were trying to address certain stability and battery life issues with WinMo.
slashdot could see if you were visiting ebay by exploiting the browser a bit -- they could make an invisible link to ebay, then pass back which color your browser made it. red link means you were there before. i dunno if they fixed this somehow, yet.
Okay... Leaving browser exploits out of it for the moment, though, isn't cookie access restricted to the domain that set it?
I mean, the whole point of the story is that people use the same username all over the place. This makes them trackable without any sort of exploit, and not in a way that has anything to do with cookies.
Now, if that's just pointless fearmongering, well I understand that. But I did, however, stop using my more identifiable nickname on Slashdot because I didn't want my professional colleagues finding my petty (yet epic) squabbles here on Slashdot. Seems to me that there is some wisdom in the idea of using different names on different sites.
Starfleet shields are impervious to laser fire. But.... that's besides the point.
In the Star Wars universe you can drive from planet to planet without even needing a hyperdrive. Their idea of 'fast' is 1.5x the speed of light. Therefore they are likely inside of a miniaturized galaxy not unlike the one referred to in Hitchhiker's Guide where an entire battle fleet was swallowed by a dog. The entire resources of the Empire would be defeated by a small hand-phaser.
Perhaps, but stories like these make me fantasize about getting a government grant to explore my theory that Starfleet could totally wipe out the Empire.
This "my software is better than yours" sentiment with people arguing how evil Apple and MS are is annoying enough, does slashdot really have to propagate this with that icon?
Isn't the fact that you can "unbrick" it mean it's not really bricked?
Eh... I've complained about this before, but for me the big difference is whether or not an easy fix was available at the time it happened. I mean if they went out of their way to create a tool to fix it later, then I don't personally have an issue with calling that 'de-bricking'.
Then again, I don't like getting fussy about the term 'brick' until people use it to mean 'it froze'.
So..what happens if your phone is out of power, or lost or you just plain don't carry the damned thing EVERYWHERE you go?
Most of the large handful of people this will affect will consider finding a way to improve their cell phone availability because it means they can't get phone calls either. One or two peeps will genuinely be bitten by it and find themselves unable to get their email for a bit. A sizable group of people who haven't been affected by it and likely won't be will go on Slashdot and bleat on about it like it like it's some big crushing, yet invisible, problem.
Every iphone 4 I've seen coworkers using lately has one of those rubber bumpers on it.
"Oh, neat, free stuff!"
This suggests to me that there is a severe problem...
The lack of returns on the iPhone should suggest otherwise.
Don't forget that the sites that keep insisting it's a big problem are also the same sites that make out like bandits when people get into fanboy wars. But.... now I'm explaining sensationalism. Funny that.
Since none of you actually RTFA's, I thought I'd do my good deed for the day and point out that they mean the people behind the wheel are the problem, not the gas pedal drivers.
There's an extra shade of gray, there: You can hold a tablet with one hand. You've seen Star Trek, right? You don't see how a device in that form factor could be handy? Do you consider a clipboard and a Trapper Keeper to be the same?

Couldn't they already do this with cookies?
Wait, is that true? Can, for example, Slashdot see that I've been visiting eBay? I
For anyone who has raised real kids, cyberkiddies would seem a cheat...
We prefer to call it 'asexual reproduction'. For most of us here, it's the only option we have!
Well, derr, that's a common trait of Slashdotters.

Yes. Slashdot serves ads while we fanboy-fight.
So you've never gotten in a shoving match with any of the kids in school?
Oh, no! Someone said mean words to me! For some reason, I absolutely must get offended by this! ...
If you made a mistake, don't make the same one again. ...
Why are some people so afraid of words?
How come you've learned this lesson but don't remember what caused you to learn it?
Isn't the fact that you can "unbrick" it mean it's not really bricked?

Seriously, no one here even slightly gives a shit. Actually no one anywhere.
Yeah, nobody's affected when a new version of IE is released.
'Oblig' is short for 'obligatus', which is latin for "this joke will never be funny."

The iphone 4 has a VERY real problem when you hold it not in some magical "death grip"....
... according to everybody but the owners of the phone.
I get a little sick of the disingenuous fanboi defense...
Look up the word 'sensationalism'
Heh. For the record, that was a typo and not a misspelling!
Huh?
Where are all the Popeye jokes?
There's a 15 year statue of limitations on Slashdot jokes. That's why we don't get Popeye jokes but we do +5 flying chair and BSOD jokes.

How do you pronounce fsck?
We're talking about Linux users, here. Pronouncing words requires human interaction.
Yeah, the other 61% use Linux.
So... what, they say 'frak' or 'fsck' instead?

Why folks would buy a tablet they have to hold with way less functionality, for more money, I just don't get.
You know that whole bit of 'not holding it' you consider to be a big selling point? Try multiplying that by -1....
