Doesn't anyone remember AOL and paying by the hour? That model was probably closer to actual costs than this AT&T plan, and we were all happy to get rid of that headache.
The scary thing is that's when AOL was at its most profitable.
If I'm going to pay for the amount of data I use, then I want the ability to completely filter ads on my iPhone. This includes the coming iAds.
Mod parent up.
The iPhone was never designed for tiered data plans. What are they going to do, have flags for what data connections are allowed? Are apps going to have a bandwidth rating? Or am I just going to have to turn the data off unless I'm in Wifi......I hope AT&T is listening. It'd be far cheaper for me to just get a regular phone and an iPod Touch. That idea hadn't even popped into my head until this came along.
The airline industry has grown quite a bit in the past several decades despite this. I don't see why charging for bandwidth use would affect competition over network speed.
You wouldn't happen to have an employee named Dilbert, would you?
At least the iPhone doesn't come with any pre-loaded AT&T software...
I got my girlfriend an HTC Fuze (Windows Mobile phone) and she started using Yahoo Instant Messenger on it. The phone bill was $20 higher than expected. Upon inspection I discovered that, by default, the Messenger was using SMS messages to ferry the data back and forth. I did a Google search for the number that the texts come from and found a number of messages from people on forums wondering if that phone number is a sign that their significant others are cheating on them. Heh.
I was about to say, all this computing power finally in the hands of the ordinary person and what's the most popular application? Fart Button.../quote.
So? It shows how plentiful computing resources are. Guess you never heard the prediction about how there'd only be 5 computers in the world.
I'm not as smart as most of you slashdotters, but this seems smart in that they can write their own security updates with Linux, as opposed to waiting for Microsoft to fix them.
Yes, but in order to do that they're also creating a budget to support the programmers doing that.
If Apple chooses to work with Foxconn, then Apple is on the hook for ensuring Foxconn is a reputable and humane supplier.
Why? Why isn't Foxconn, the Chinese gov't, Intel, Dell, Sony, Nintendo, etc, on the hook?
Or is it okay to let a company like Apple accrue the benefits of outsourcing (i.e. lower prices, more flexible manufacturing, etc.) while ignoring negative consequences (i.e. environmental damage, inhumane working conditions, etc.)?
Apparently it's okay to hold Apple to a different standard because fanboys are annoying.
I thought of that too. Just another pro-Apple story in disguise.
All it took was for people annoyed by fanboys to bring that to light! I'd say more, but I'm off to write a 3 page email about how my carpal tunnel is crippling me.
Is it just me or does it seem ridiculous that "our device X supports flash" is becoming a major selling point??
If the rest of the internet has been babbling about Apple and Flash the same way Slashdot has been babbling about it, it's easy to believe why they'd see it that way.
When you run AdBlock, are you turning off the ads to everybody who visits the site?
Seriously, why is it that every time this comes up there's always somebody who comes along and asks this? Is there really a large group of you that have no understanding at all of how an ad-based website operates? Is it really such a foreign concept that when you post you're generating content others are reading and getting served ads on? The thickheadedness on this topic is jaw-dropping. We sit here and babble three or four times a day about Google, but when a discussion about Slashdot having ads comes up suddenly you using ad-block means nobody gets ad revenue at all, period. Lame.
Wah wah wah, we hurt the poor widdle mac loser's feelings? Too bad. Get the fuck off my internet and don't come back until you're smart enough to use a REAL computer. Anyone stupid enough to buy a Mac deserves endless teasing and harassment from his superiors.
Translation: "Aww shit, my Apple stereotype hasn't been applicable for years and now I look stupid! Well hopefully the phrase 'real computer' is ambiguous enough to imply that I have a computer that does something the Mac doesn't and nobody'll challenge me on it!"
Reminds of Forest Gump when Forest says he invested in a "fruit" company that turns out to be Apple. If people invested their money into Apple right after that movie came out, they'd be living like Gump themselves right now.
It's just mind-blowing what you could do if you had 20 years of hindsight 20 years ago.

Um...
1-(3/(2*24*365))=0.999828...
What's the problem, just round it up!
On a side note, why are people suddenly so in love with the term "infographic"? Can't we call it a "graph" or "chart"?
Sure, but that means you won't be using the terms 'sci-fi' or 'comedy' anymore.
I'm not as smart as most of you slashdotters, but this seems smart in that they can write their own security updates with Linux, as opposed to waiting for Microsoft to fix them.

Fuck every corporation that sold America out.
Oh please. Like it's all America's fault. Fuck the Chinese gov't for not protecting their workforce.

Wow! I didn't know Asus wrote the iPad's operating system!

Heh. So is this a parody of the people I was yapping about, or did you really not read my point and go out of your way to prove that?
Ads? slashdot has ads?

Why is Slashdot so stuck on Apple?
Every time we wave our pitchforks Slashdot serves a metric buttload of ads.
There's no need to feel down!
I'm not sure what different perspective I'm supposed to take from your statement. That we should accept crappy limits because the UK does?
Yeah, no kidding. I thought we were supposed to discuss how everybody in the world has better internet access than the US does.
1) This is about downloading content, not DRM.
Duh. Why do you think movies are getting downloaded but there hasn't been a corresponding drop in sales?
2) Both their logic and history have proven them correct.
Proven who correct? DRM hasn't increased sales. If anything it has encouraged people to find pirated content.
Slashdotter's believe that the studios can make more money by giving their product away for free.
Not quite. They believe that making a product do less won't increase sales.
It's under idle and easy to ignore. BFD.
You finished with 1 point out of 4. Three of those were awfully desperate. Feeling insecure there, buddy?
Wah wah wah, we hurt the poor widdle mac loser's feelings? Too bad.

I submitted this 'news' when Atlantis launched, ten days ago...
... before its safe landing was only a statistical probability. :P
