    Well, it's not so resource intensive that the landline telephone company can't send the name and number (and date and time!) with each call to a landline phone.

    You don't have to do all the stuff the article lists, just hold down the left shift key when the disk load. Then, do not double click the drive at all, or it will also autorun (if you want to take a peek, use "Explore"). It also sounds like there's no protection at all in Linux.

    Piggybacking on this first post since there's already 500 comments.

    Behind Enemy Lines was an inconsistent piece of crap.

    1) The way the missile tracked the plane, and the plane did all sorts of loops was pure fiction.

    2) After ejecting, the first thing you do after landing is hide your parachute, and if it was a 2 seater, you wouldn't leave your buddy standing in a clearing if you had just been right there, broken ankle or not.

    3) The huey's being used in the rescue mission variously had 1 and 2 engines---1 over land, and 2 over water--look at the turbine exhausts.

    4) When the french commandos were coming in for a rescue mission, they would not have aborted because of some idiot reporter making up a story.

    5) The pilot fixed his radio by reversing the battery. Wtf was it not in right in the first place. Doesn't anyone check these things before taking off?

    6) You can't run through claymore mine trip wires like the pilot guy did, and survive...

    Natural global warming is opening up the northern frontiers as it has been doing for tens of thousands of years. At some point it may become a concern, but so long as the land area which can be inhabited by humans has a net increase, I have no problem with it.

    Whilst some alarmist types are apt to jump up and down and say, "See! Look what global warming is doing," I think events like this need to be considered carefully before making drastic predictions. Is the melting of the ice shelfs in the north due to long term climate change, or due to short term factors? If it's long term climate change, there's no reason to fear or try to prevent it--if it hadn't started in the first place, most of North America would still have Mastadons roaming the plains.

    If people can't discuss bugs and security problems online, the only places it will be done is privately, i.e. in Symantec's and NAI's labs... this is one way to kill your competition--get the government to outlaw it.

    Half-Life 2 is a DirectX 9 game, not an OpenGL game. If you want to play Half-Life 2, you should get a card designed for DirectX 9, not OpenGL.

    I recently reinstalled Windows XP. There were 47 "critical" updates. Installed service pack 1. Then there were 29 critical updates left. About time for Service pack 2.

    Go to nana-e, and they'll tell you that robots from space run SPEWS, and there's no way to get a hold of them. They start with Class C's, then progress to banning class A's. Some of the crazies who post on nana-e even have the whole country of Brazil banned on their private lists. SPEWS had information too on DNS blackholing (i.e. preventing your users from going to internet sites) and on HTTP blocking. If it was anyone else (the government) who was advocating this, people would be outraged.

    My email providers are a large regional cable modem ISP, and hotmail. Today I got 2 unfiltered spams on hotmail, and 1 on my regular ISP. pretty much regular traffic. And neither of them used SPEWS.

    MSN messenger takes 20 seconds to load, and takes about 3x as much RAM as .NET Messenger. As long as they don't make me stop using .NET messenger, I'm happy.

    However, when you connect a 10baseT NIC to a 100baseT switch, you don't slow down the rest of the connections to the switch, which can still operate at 100baseT. The situation with wireless, a shared medium, is more analogous to connecting a 10 baseT NIC to a 100/10 baseT auto sensing hub--when you hook up that 10baseT card, it slows down the rest of the hub to 10 baseT.
