Sorry but nope. The only thing keeping me in Windows land is software support. Since I can't do what I need to with Linux or OSX guess what? I'm not moving. If more of the top software vendors released Linux versions of their most popular applications we'd most likely see people switching. A brand spanking sports car woudl be nice to have but is it a good everyday driver? Hell no.:)
Sorry but I fail to see why all these stories about how poorly Vista is selling is news. It's like pointing to a naked man on the street and screaming "HE'S NOT WEARING ANY CLOTHS!!!" Is anyone truly suprised buy the low sales numbers? Howmany people have actually bought a copy of XP? Howmany people got XP preloaded on their new machines? Most people don't build their systems from scratch so not very many people would by a copy of Windows off the shelf. As for upgrading to Vista, we all know there is currently no reason to upgrade to Vista. The only people I see adopting Vista early will be the PC gamers who are drooling over the coming crop of Direct X 10 games. Everyone else will most likely continue using XP/2000. Vista has to mature as an OS before it will be worth the trouble of upgrading. These are non-stories. When I read these stories all I hear is "Waaa I hate evil Microsoft!"

You must be kidding right? You'd have to be an idiot to find updating things like 3ds max and Maya (Autodesk applications) a chore. I use both of these and updating is as simple as downloading the patch and then running it. Where's the difficulty in that? Adobe software is even easier. It's update manager lets you knwo where tere are updates available for any adobe products you have installed and lets you decide when to download and install them. Pretty much like windows updates. I used Turbo Tax on the web so not much need to update it. You sound like one of those infomercials where they have these idiots making the most simple task seem like rocket science. I run a host of non MS applications and none of them have a crazy update process. Most update themselves for you. Those that don't do this simply require you to download the patch yourself then simply run it. Even many of my games have a simple click to update. I know you love your particular flavor of Linux and all but misrepresenting the difficulty of doing something as simple as applictaion updates is pretty weak.
Err... Killing civilians and cops have negative effects in GTA (cops start hunting you down) the badder you are the higher your wanted level is and the HARDER it is for you to complete your missions.
And please tell me when should someone be deemed "grown up enough?" Try to keep this in perspective. Kids have always played violent games. What goes on in a kid's imagination is most likely MUCH more violent then the games you feel they are not grown up enough to play. Kids aren't peacful little cherubs. Kids are just as violent today as they were gaes ago. Are we gonna start restricting their imaginations? Oh wait I forgot. That's already started. All this PC garbage does very little to help. It only breeds resentment. It's no longer OK to be a normal kid. It's even worse to be a normal male kid. Ignoring our violent side as a species is a big mistake.
It's fine that you don't think the popular FPS where you can kill human types are good but please don't presume to know what is good for the rest of the people who play games or for their kids. The violent games function as a great outlet for your pent up agression. Since it's not OK to haul off and shoot/kill the people who irritate/agrivate you no matter how much you'd like to it's good to be ale to load up a game and do it virtually. I did it many times as a kid and still do it.
While kids to mimic things they aren't totally brainless. It all depends on YOUR parenting skills. I am a prime example of this. I grew up in Southern California in the 80's during the hight of the streegang wars. Many of my friends were in gangs and I regularly witnessed their shootouts and even saw quite a few people die. Now by your logic I should have joined right up and did the same stupid shit. I did not. I never joined a gang. I never got involved in any of the highly illegal activities my friends were into. I'm not gonna say I wasn't tempted. Seeing how much money my friends were making compared to the peanuts I was making working fast food made it VERY tempting. What kept me from doing this? My parents. They raised me to know right from wrong and to THINK about things before doing them. They taught me there were always positive and negative consequences for your actions. These are the same parents who allowed me and my siblings to watch pretty much anything we wanted except porn obviously. They were confident they weren't rasing any little idiots or monsters and they were right. Each of us kids were straight-A students and in advanced placement classes. We never had any trouble with the law. We didn't even get into many fights. Those few we did get into were self-defense. My father told us he never wanted us to start fights but if a fight came to us we better make sure we were the ones to end it. He taught us the ugly realities of life and what we needed to know to survive in this world. This in no way robbed us of our childhood. We played the same games normal kids played and had the same silly misconceptions kids have. Ignorance is NOT bliss and sheltering your kids from life's realities does them a disservice. Specially if you know you live in a place where they will be subjected to undesireable elements. You know when it's time to give your kids another life lesson. My mother and father sure as hell did. Sometimes it was freaking creepy how they almost seemed to know when I was at a moral crossroads. Now I know they just kept a close eye on us. Too bad today's parents want to push their parental resp on to others.
YOu are joking right? Why on earth are you replacing your PC THAT often? Are you a gamer? I used to do broadband helpdesk and most of the peopel I helped had machines they've been running for 3 or more years. It was usually gamers who had the nice new systems. Oh how they loved to tell me what they upgraded to. LOL!!! I recently purchaced a whole new PC just for Vista. My old system is about 4 years old and still runs great. I'm converting it to a file server. So the question again is what are you doing to you PC's?
That's too funny. What exactly do you thik will tempt windows users this time around about the new Mac OS over previous versions? Sorry but that whole lack of mainstream software support is a killer. Why would I buy a Formula 1 race car over a standard car for everyday driving? With the normal car (Windows) I can pretty much go anywhere. With the F1 (Mac OS/Linux) I can't. Mac OS is not a mainstream OS. LOL!!! Linux has a better shot at becoming mainstream than the Mac OS.
This should motivate Creative to put out better drivers. But th eultimate problem is the user. They should do some research before buying a PC periferal. For example I do lots of 3D VFX and animation on my rig. When I was shooping around for a good gaming/3d card I looked at ATI and nVidia. I went with nVidia based on the very common reports of ATI having a history of releasing garbage drivers if you plan to do 3D modeling work with the card. I have never used an ATI card so I can't say how accurate the complaints were but the fact that I found this complaint from MANY people who do 3D it was enough to steer me aay from ATI and cost them a sale. More peopel should do this kind of research when looking at jumping to a new OS which appears to be significantly different from it's predicessor to require actual hardware upgrades. When peopel ask me for advice on upgrading to Vista I tell them to stay with XP for at least a year more. There really isn't any reason to move to Vista at all and many reason for NOT moving to Vista.
I know many people who work on the CG side of the film industry. I have yet to hear any of them tell me about a serious production house running Maya (or any other CG app) on a Mac. They've told me of running Maya on Linux and such but never on a Mac. I recently went back to school to get my degree in computer animation and fisual FX. We actually had both Mac and Windows computer labs. They tried Maya on the Macs and after only a few minutes of testing it they couldn't uninstall it fast enough. The thing ran horribly. It was VERY unstable and a major resource hog. So the Mac lab was pretty much only used for A/V editing and web design. The Mac lab was known to us for the various random crashes. Many of the professors half prayed when doing a demo for us because the things would lock up so often. We did not see this amazing stability many Mac fanboys rant about. I don't know who is actually buying that 20% but I would love to know. Windows/Linux pretty much dominate that industry.
This is great. They think being selfaware means they should get HUMAN rights? If this is the case then Dolphins should get it too since they have demonstarted a long time ago they are selfaware. Oh wait this only applies to animal life which resembles humans which make it easier for us to personify them and/or identify with them. Just becasuse the plant can not run away screaming, doesn't look in any way like us, and isn't cute and cuddly doesn't make it any less alive and less deserving of the same protections they want to extend to some memebrs of the animal kingdom. Well, you can focus on the window you actually want to capture then use the alt key along with the print screen key and then you have captured only the window you wanted and not your whole screen.

The old problems never go away: too many networking services enabled by default; too many owners running their boxes as admins and downloading every bit of malware they can get their hands on." And also...
As Billg likes to point out, Windows is the platform on which 90 per cent of the computing industry builds, and this naturally means that it's the platform on which 90 per cent of spyware, adware, virus, worm, and Trojan developers build. That translates into 90 per cent of botnet zombies, 90 per cent of spam relays, 90 per cent of spyware hosts, and 90 per cent of worm propagators. In a nutshell, Windows is single-handedly responsible for turning the internet into the toxic shithole of malware that it is today. So the real problem is USERS choosing to run as admins and blindly downlaoding and installing things they shouldn't... This sounds like a USER issue not an OS issue. When you tell a child to not do this or bad things will happen do they usually listen? More often then not they will not. The same applies to your basic computer user. I have been using Windows since I was dragged kicking and screaming to Win95. I have never been attacked by a virus or downloaded a trojan or any other kind of malware while many of my friends seem to be a magnet for these things. We are using the same OS. I even help them configure their systems to be like mine. Yet they infect themselves. The difference is I watch where I go and do not download or install any apps if they did not come directly from the source (usually). I don't read email from people I don't know and never accept email attachments. If you go to places known to be full of sickness and disease who do you blame when you get sick? The city? No you blame yourself for being very stupid. Or rather you SHOULD blame yourself. Many people will still find a way to shift the blame. The blaming of MS for the huge numbers of malware out there is stupid. Do they honestly think it would be any different if any other OS held 90% of the computer market? It's like blaming banks for the existance of bank robbers. Get a clue. Please!
