I completely agree. It's because we are all hooked into outlets that allow us to stay ahead of the news. It's just one of those things that we do well because we are passionate about tech and science. It's not necessarily that they are behind it's just that we are ahead.

Here's a good tip to stay years ahead of the game. Every once in a while check out tech companies career pages to see what they are hiring for. I could have told you that Logitech would be coming out with Blutooth and wireless gaming headsets years ago because they were specifically looking for engineers with blutooth and wireless experience. Most companies unknowingly give away what projects they will be working on by requiring specific qualifications in a resume. Right now Google is hiring developers for a new web based operating system. That's just one example of why we are way ahead of the mainstream.

  14. Sacrifices content and performance for aesthetics on Slashdot Launches Re-Design · · Score: 1

I like the new design very much. The only thing I don't like is a majority of the comments are collapsed. One of the best parts about /. is reading all of the intelligent and witty comments. The real value in this site is the intellectual level of it's patrons, seriously. I like reading what everyone thinks about DOCSIS, network administration, etc... This site isn't for everyday people, it's for geeks, and as such I want to see things from a variety of viewpoints. The new design takes up too much of my time to really enjoy others opinions. Because of whatever changes were made (I could find out but don't care to) the site is actually much slower loading for me.

To summarize: It's slower and harder to use but looks better. Sacrificing content and performance for aesthetics... doesn't take a genius to see how this will affect the daily visitors.

If you don't listen to customers who purchase your product that's a recipe for a short business venture. If you don't want to visit your own forums then DON'T HAVE ONE. If you want people to have a place on the web to discuss your ideas, creativity, products, etc... then a fan will create one if your product is good enough. Game developers should have blogs if they don't want to interact with their users. Fan sites go a very long way towards retaining brand loyalty. If you don't listen to your biggest fans then you'll lose them and all the loyalty they've worked hard to create FOR YOU. Which in that case, would make you an unappreciative a**hole. People don't have to buy your product or reiterations of it. If you take your users for granted you'll lose them and your business.

In this particular instance it's not an issue due to age and race. Had that not been the case then sure, I might be a little concerned. All employers wanting to hire technicians should do a proper background check instead of the unprofessional results displayed in a google search or worse... social networking sites.

If an employer didn't hire me because they thought I'm that fictitious other guy because of their own unprofessional methods (a.k.a. stupidity) I'm fine with that... I would only end up unhappy and frustrated by working with stupid people anyway.

  22. DJDevon3 on Student Googles Himself, Finds He's Accused of Murder · · Score: 2, Insightful

While searching for my own name I found out someone in the same town with the same name was sentenced to 50 years in prison. The guy was nailed for possession of about 3 kilo's of cocaine. The intent to distribute was pretty obvious. Let's just say none of my old friends or girlfriends have ever contacted me since.

Which brings up a nifty scenario if you don't want to be contacted by old girlfriends. Just find a state vs drug dealer affidavit online somewhere, fill in the blanks with you name, create your own legal sounding domain name, and post it. Private reg on the dns is a good idea. This happened to me coincidentally but I was thinking it would work exactly the same if I did it to myself on purpose. It's not illegal to make a hoax directed towards yourself right? It works surprisingly well.

    1. Old hats will not take the trouble to wade through the justice system to find your contact info.
    2. They probably wouldn't want to after reading your affidavit anyway.

Make social engineering statements in the affidavit to deter old hat resurrection. For female deterrent add things like "hit girlfriend and mother in the face with large bludgeoning tool (baseball bat)". For male deterrent add things like "stabbed neighbor in the testicles with a hunting knife".
