There are *hundreds* of stocks that will blow away any gains Corel will make this year...the only reason you would buy that stock is for purely sentimental reasons.
It appears from what he was hinting at, that nearly all of the Mozilla develoers are simply former Netscape developers. Can anyone confirm this? Not that it shocks me - there are only so many willing programmers to go around, and a number of interesting projects were already occupying any willing participants by time Mozilla started up.
With the 6.0 release, I will be placing my expectations high, and RedHat will need to meet them to keep me from drifting to another distro.
Among the changes I would like to see:
Linuxconf done right. The current version is shameful.
Customer services at RedHat improved. With the influx of cash they have received from outside vendors, they need to run a better FTP site for packages.
The last time I asked for this last item here, RedHat personnel responded that there were many mirrors and the money would be better spent on other things. Balderdash I say - they had better get their act together and quit assuming others will pick up their slack. They've got the money - there is no room for excuses.
RedHat and Linux in general are making huge strides towards delivering a quality product at a great price, but I really want to see them go the last 10% and do it right. I'd rather spend $20 more and get the finished product done right.
How could a critique of the article be off topic?

This is very disturbing. I did not use profanity, or insult the author in a personal manner. I did say that the article was garbage - is this what the Slashdot Politburo considers offensive?
VA Research bungled my order from beginning to end. I became enraged with the incompetence they demonstrated for such a small company. To be specific, my computer was late (very late) and misconfigured. They took longer than I would expect even the most incompetent supplier would take.
If you can't stand the thought of risk, don't invest in net stocks.
For those of you who manifet more balls than the increasingly apocalyptic and generally squeamish Jon Katz, there's money to be made. Quite a bit in fact.

The citizens of New York must be stopped at all costs. This will give the New York Air Force too much of an advantage over the rest of us. The Prime Minister of New York must be eliminated.
Like yahoo or not, domain squatting has made a mess of the web. its not fair that someone can go out and buy up every conceivable permutation of a company's brand name and then blackmail them to get it back.

by saying it was cliched, i wasn't implying that it was wrong, but more to the point, we should recognize that Katz essentially is a hack. i haven't seen one really noteworthy piece of writing by him in this forum. he tends to basically rewrite others' ideas and try to look insightful in the process.

Even if you wanted to pour out the leftist workers-are-getting-screwed drivel, it was chic two years ago (a la William Greider and others). Now its just cliched.
Typical Gen X whining. A hundred years ago four year-old children worked to death in mines. Today 21 year-olds are becoming millionaires. Quit whining and admit it that you're just projecting your own failure.
or with any unix for that matter. web devices need to be simple simple simple. that means about as simple as the palmpilot.
/.'s don't seem to understand that simple means not editing files in/etc. if you like editing files in/etc, thats cool, so do i, but a mass-market product will never make it with software as complex as linux. you don't need a multiuser OS on your calculator.
As much as I have personally gained from open source software, and as much as I'm generally in favor of the concept...I'm not sure about it as a business model just yet. No one has demonstrated that they can make a lot of money with this model. And no folks, Red Hat doesn't qualify as having made "a lot of money".
