but somehow I think that if it weren't so easy to pirate games, there indeed would be more people who bought them.
Ah, but do you think that the average joe gamer has the knowledge AND patience to easily pirate games?
Most people I know (aka non-techie people), doesn't even know what the difference between a zip file and a rar file... much less even know what an ISO is, and so on.
To sucessfully pirate games in a regular basis, you have to
A) Have a good source of pirated games
B) Knowledge to know what to do with said pirated game (as in most cases, isn't just install and play)
and C) Lots of patience to solve problems that might arise.
Ok. I know that the vast majority of/. readers have all three points, but we're talking about average joe gamer, isn't it?
What i'm trying to say is that not everyone with an internet connection can sucessfully pirate games.
That was more like an anti-USA publicity stunt than anything else. You see, in their minds, Microsoft == Bush == Imperialism. I don't think that they really understand (o care) what the open source movement is all about. For example, the last two elections here were made with smartmatic voting machines, with propietary software. Of course, there were many doubts about the results of those elections (similar to the Florida voting machines incident). In that scenario, the use of truly OPEN source software is more than appropiate
I don't think anybody really thinks that Google is altruistic.
Did you read the parent post?
Well. I like Google as much as the next guy, as long as they keep releasing free (as in beer, at least) software and services that doesn't suck.
I think that google found a way to profit without cutting the throats of their customers. Well, good for them AND us, I say.
