  1. moar python on What 'IT' Stuff Should We Teach Ninth-Graders? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm all for teaching programming... but I'm not sure you can do a respectable job of python in the time you'd have in a course like this. If you did, I'd teach a small subset, like python's turtle library.

  2. Re:n to log(n) on A Quantum Linear Equation Solver · · Score: 1

Slow down there. Solving an NxN system of linear equations is a O(n^3) operation in the dense case. (Yes, you can speed it up with LU decomposition(if you want to solve the same matrix with lots of b matrices) for an O(n^3) once and O(n^2) after that, or might be able to get a better iterative scheme(though you can't really plan on it).) Your point still remains about not being NP-complete or NP-hard. But it's one more thing we could do with quantum computing, and I'd still be pretty satisfied with myself if I could take an O(n^3) to O(log n).

  3. Ease vs Flexibility on Gentoo 2006.0 Screenshot Tour · · Score: 1

So it looks pretty nice, but I hope they retain the old way for flexibility. Knowing Gentoo, I think we're safe. This will be pretty nice when it's finals week and I accidentally mess something up and just need it to work again, now. I think it'll probably just about double Gentoo's userbase, because the biggest complaint about it is probably the install.

  4. it's all samsung's fault! on Film Studios Sue Samsung Over DVD players · · Score: 5, Insightful

From the article: ''The Motion Picture Association of America estimates that the movie industry lost $5.4 billion last year due to piracy.'' Hrm, yeah, and I bet that's all people buying dvd's from other countries and bepassing the DRM with samsung equipment. Oh, wait, wasn't that the Linux pirates last week?

As in, things for a bright college student to do, without needing 10 years of experience in everything. I mean, I get the point, but I *know* that I'm capable of doing a few things here and there.

  6. Re:Dvorak: wrong, again. on Apple to 'Switch' to Windows? · · Score: 1

You took that completely out of context. Dvorak's quote was:
"Also, although the iPod was designed to get people to move to the Mac, this didn't happen."

That doesn't seem like the same thing to me.

  7. Get Serious! on The Most Desired Linux Ports · · Score: 1

I start with a disclaimer, which is that GIMP is good enough for me. Then on the other hand, I drive a gutless old pickup that happens to be very tempermental. So..... take it with a grain of salt. A couple of my friends are really into art. Both of them dislike the GIMP. A lot. Especially the one that's going to art school. I think that if it wants to be taken seriously in 'the industry', it needs to try to penetrate the instructional environment. I mean, isn't that what Apple did? The key to this, though, is that.... however hard it might be to admit.... The GIMP people would have to listen to what those guys had to say. I'm not saying that GIMP isn't good enough, or that people haven't had some amazing results with it. I'm saying that an art school grad needs to be able to sit down with it and feel completely comfortable, or it's wasted effort.

  8. Military Advancement on Linux Powers Military UGV · · Score: 1

Excellent point! Like it or not, guys, many of the things we enjoy today are the result of military advances. The best thing would be if this would benefit Linux somehow, which seems a little unlikely, but we can hope, I guess.

"pride" Thank you! Linux is not a "cute little" toy anymore, it's a tool, and it happens to be one especially well-fit for this job. Anything that increases Linux's reputation is good for Linux. And political policy....is just that.
