Indeed, that's how I tagged the Article. I mean if they were going to attack any release, why didn't they attack 9.04, it almost made me switch Distro's. As long as I've been using Ubuntu (since 5.10), the .10 releases always felt like testing grounds and the .04 always felt stable. They seem to have switched this time around and I hope the few little bits of Polish required will make 10.04 LTS a serious option for our corporate SOE.

I've installed on 4 different machines (including one I've always had trouble with because of the cheap KVM) and it's been the least effort I've ever had to put in. No custom scripts to fix the screen up on my work notebook (dual screen just works and it detects when I'm not at work and goes back to single). My Desktop at home runs exceptionally smoothly (nvidia card). I seem to be able to watch flash on my Notebook again, pulse seems to be behaving nicely (no slow, jitter or ultra fast). My Fiance is voluntarily using the Netbook Remix I installed on her machine (XP Home is the default, no point forcing her into anything else), which was also pretty seamless. So three fresh installs and an Upgrade. 3 desktop/1 Remix.

I did read that a lot of people were having troubles with 64bit + the closed source binary nvidia drivers, but can we really hold Ubuntu responsible for that? There is a big warning when installing the Binary drivers, so maybe Nvidia need to get there shit together.

Indeed, before setting up my mythbox 4 years ago, I never watched TV. I work a lot and also have a pretty active social life, so tying myself down to watch a particular show at a particular time is very difficult. If I do get to watch a show, it's half way through the season, I've got bugger all clue whats going on, so I can't be bothered.

My Mythbox now has 3 tuners, 1.2TB of space and about 50 automatic record searches, sure I don't watch them all, but when something does interest me and I have a spare saturday and feel like chilling out, I can catch up on a show in one hit. Where in the new millennium, people simple aren't getting home at 5pm, eating at 6pm and settling in for the night every day of the week.

10GB is probably a good number to have, been running less than that for years, but then again I'm not quite an average user. It's handy to have home on a separate partition, I've had the same /home for 5 or 6 versions of Ubuntu, means I can upgrade to the next version (i like to keep up with the latest to see where Ubuntu is going) in under an hour and not have to re-set everything up again. Simple case of install, add a few apps that I need that aren't installed by default and get back to work.

Problem is Aero shouldn't slow down the machine as much as it does. I run Dual Screen Compiz (Extra Desktop Effects in Ubuntu) with a few extra things turned on, with a crappy Intel GMA 945 and it actually makes the environment slicker and faster (well apart from intels first addition of the drivers in 9.04, but I believe they addressed this in 9.10), not only faster, but longer battery life and less cpu usage! And it's been this way for quite some time, even when I was running Beryl on my 7.04 install a few years ago on my even slower/crappier intel card I had in my old notebook.

I've always found Foxit Reader very lean and fast on a windows platform, so having to install Adobe reader for General PDF viewing is unnecessary. Now it borks with Adobes extensions to the format, but they are not part of the standard and they seem to be following the path of MS, breaking compatibility to try and gain back/maintain a monopoly over the PDF format.

Read the PDF, it seems like he's still pushing the whole FTTN + VDSL angle, which when I met him, argued that the premise, whilst an improvement on what we have, is seriously flawed. Telstra will still control the "Last Mile", meaning that they can still gouge us. Now if they are going to go with FTTP, then that changes things a lot, but it isn't going to close to even being started in their current term and I have a feeling they may not make it to a second term. Combine all of that with the fact Senator Conroy changes his story on a daily basis, so I wouldn't be watching us at all!

The thing with CDRs that was explained to me, was that the difference between the expensive brands and the cheap brands are the amount of presses the plates make (can't recall the exact terminology, but the plate imprints the recordable material onto the round disc), for an expensive brand they'll replace the plate after 500,000, where as the cheaper brands will run them from around 800,000 to 1,000,000 impressions. Which means the first 500,000 will be exactly the same as an expensive brand and as you get higher, the reliability will drop off rapidly. Hence why you can buy a spindle that will be perfect, but another time most of them will croak. Don't have any evidence to back this up, but it seems rather plausible to me.
