I already have over 600 CDs. Some I've never listened to. I can only listen to a few a day. I live in a town where there's live music every night, and most independent musicians will sell you a CD at their gigs -- cheap! How many more RIAA CDs do I need?
before they cross bovine and cocoa plant genes, and come up with a cow that gives chocalate milk...
After over 2 years of doctors not being able to tell me why my daughter was congested all the time, I switched her to soy milk, and the problem immediately went away!
One folder for offers from Nigerians to make me rich, one folder for penis enlargement, and one folder for pr0n offers... that handles about 99% of my incoming email. Isn't that what everybody else does?
Chances are, if you own an IRA or a 401k, you own stock, thus the majority of people do own at least part of the corporations. The problem is that most people that own stock do so through mutual funds, so they don't actually have a vote -- the fund managers do. That's why I'm advocating consumer boycotts instead of attempting to change companies through buying stock and voting. The railroads and coal mines didn't use of business model predicated on "stealing other people's intellectual property and then jealously guarding it as your own." Disney and Microsoft do; that's why I personally consider them bad. Microsoft is by no means the worst company out there, but they do appear to put their own enrichment above meeting the needs of the consumer. Giving people a viable alternative to M$ helps keeps M$ honest. That's why supporting Open Source helps all consumers, even if they don't all switch from Windows to GNU.
Doesn't an earth-destroying asteroid have a little bit more mass than a spaceship? Like about 100,000 times the mass? Seems like it would take a LOT of nearby explosions to appreciably change the trajectory of a large asteroid. But then, I'm not a nuclear physicist.
This is like saying, "Obviously the only people interested in cars are sports car fans because that is all we sell (and make)." On the other hand, try making a sports car targeted at radical environmentalists instead of sports car fans, and see how well it sells...
Shotguns do not appreciably effect the momentum of a human being; they just cause damage. A nuclear blast in space near an object is NOT a very good means of changing the momentum of the object, because there is no mass in "empty" space to conduct the shockwave. Only a small fraction of the atoms from the bomb would impact the asteroid, and even if these have very high velocity, a few kilograms of matter striking a billion ton object simply isn't going to have much effect. In order to change the course of as asteroid, you've got to accelate a significant amount of mass in the opposite direction. This would involve embedding the bomb deep within the asteroid and channeling the force out through a nozzle, thus using the asteroid's own mass to accelerate it. The fact that the asteroid is made out of swiss cheese only makes a difference if it allows other paths for the gases produced by the explosion to escape.
So which format should I use for the best compatibility? Right now, you're probably stuck with ASCII text. In the near future, they should standardize on an XML-based format like SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), and all new word processors with the possible exception of Micro$oft's will support it.
In every industry, companies target the people they know will buy the product. Nobody wants to do the missionary sell to a new audience, because those who do frequently lose money. Why do the car manufacturers keep making and advertising the heck out of SUVs? Not because everybody wants one, but because thats what they make the most profit on! You expect the game industry to be any different? You expect them to blow several million dollars to develop a game on the off chance that it _might_ appeal to a new demographic? Not a chance! Companies that engage in wild speculation go the way of 3DO. Companies that keep doing what works go the way of Sony, Nintendo, Sega, and Microsoft...
Games developers are trying to sell games. Games will not sell unless they are "fun". Obviously "geeks" are the type currently spending the most money on games, therefore it would be economic suicide to not target these types. Let's face it, if you've got a modeling career, an active social life, and volunteer for greenpeace in your spare time, you're not going to have a lot of time and money to spend on games, are you? From Chess to Monopoly, are there really any games that aren't targeted at geeks? Last time I went to a rave, I didn't see anybody playing "twister"...
All long time readers of the rec.humor newgroups will recognize "the string joke". Apparently it was submitted so many times that it became a cliche for the "already heard joke", to the point that whenever somebody submitted what was thought to be an old joke, people would reply simply with the phrase "I'm afraid not". Ah, those were the good ol' days...
Am I the only one drawn to the inescapable conclusion that God has deliberately obfuscated the universe to prevent reverse engineering? Or maybe I've just been working too hard...
Uh, wouldn't corporate domination be called something like "autocracy"? I don't know of any corporations headed by a king! In fact, by definition, corporations are owned by shareholders... which in the US means that over 50% of the population are at least indirectly in charge of these evil corporations! If you don't like what a corporation is doing then convince a significant portion of the population to boycott that corporation's products! The problem is not that there's some evil conspiracy between government and corporate interests, the problem is that 99.9% of the people clearly don't give a shit! Educate them!
Can't SCO easily get around this by issuing press releases in German in some other countries? Wouldn't it really be necessary to get injunctions in all 170 different countries to really make the FUD machine stop? In the future, will allowing slander and FUD become a big part of small island econmies like Nevis/St Kitts?
Somehow, I find it difficult to beleive that an extraterestrial object is "mostly air"! Mostly vacuum or mostly some other gas, maybe. Also, what difference does it make if it "absorbs" an impact -- that just means 100% of the impacting objects momemtum has gone into changing the asteroids momemtum. Methinks that would be a GOOD thing if one were trying to deflect an asteroid!

I hope the winning bidder is a lawyer!
Take them apart and use the pieces to build 366 mice with the right number of buttons.
anybody care to start sending invoices to SCO for their use of GPL and BSD software?

The NiCads that are used now can be made to short out and explode. Why aren't they banned?

People now pay $5000 to fly a MiG for a few minutes; imagine how much they'll pay to gaze out the window at a big blue marble!

Take note of this, Id Software: Doom will never be as popular as the movie Gigli unless you make it more fun!

I already make a point of insisting that people who send me .DOC files resend them in a vendor-neutral format -- even though I am running windows!

And exactly how many patents does SCO own? Care to cite the patent numbers, or are you just another part of the SCO FUD machine?
