one one hand a convicted monopolist who crushes competition thru market domination
on another hand a company whos main aim is to hoard data and serve ads with it, a company thanks to whom the web is littered with splogs
take a pick
evil or not evil, eitherway their main objective is profit (no matter what marketing fud they spread) and for google open source is a way to reach their objectives while cutting the costs, if they were so open why dont they share their algorithms or release their tools on linux?
until they start making cars that are in the same media price range as average family car and more importantly doesnt look like a giant sperm-cell on 3 wheels (see video to understand what i mean!)
am I the only developer thats sick of this html / css / javascript mess??
people/companies are trying to develop rich applications using decade old markup language thats improperly supported by different browsers (even firefox doesn't fully support css yet) and is a very ugly mix right now, its like squeezing a rectangular plasticine object thru a round, triangular and starshaped holes at the same time
the web needs a reboot
we need a programming language that:
*works on the server and the client
*something that makes making UIs as easy as drag and drop
*something that does not forgive idiot html "programmers" who write bad code
*something that doesnt suffer from XSS
*something that can be extended easily
*something that can be "compiled" for faster execution
*something thats implemented same way in all browsers (or even better doesnt require a browsers and works on range of platforms)
don't forget the whole slough of Linux servers that they use through Akamai to handle the bandwidth;
it's one reason why why doing a lookup on Microsoft servers, it often shows that they are running Linux. It's also another reason why people point out that Linux is more scalable because even Microsoft can't eat it's own dogfood.
but i believe silverlight will be a large part of the rich web
now this is my personal opinion and heres why: *it was designed with web applications in mind (XAML) unlike the current html/css/javascript mess *its more or less crossplatform *it brings C# to the clients browser (see javascript mess above) *has vector and hd video supprt of the box *is designed to be easily updated

where is this wonderful place you all speak of?
1. make a press release 2. get slashvertised 3. wait few years to actually develop the technology at affordable prices 4. profit??
the title is misleading
how many billions of years are we talking about?
should we (with our tiny lifespans) care whether the universe flies apart into nothingness or crushes itself?
dont we have more pressing issues as humanity to worry about (take a pick: global warming, george bush, global recession, peak oil)?

instead of moaning about it
can you suggest an open source solution that the BBC can use instead of iPlayer that is not proprietary and works on Windows/Mac and Linux???
