I just recently found a job doing Java programming in Paris, it was actually blind luck that got it for me though. I posted a message on a Paris Q&A board (not even job related) when I get this random email from a company asking me if I knew Java and when could I start.
I'm in the same boat you are in that my French isn't so hot, but I'm working on it. The company is also English-speaking, which is REALLY nice.
The hurdles to getting a job (especially in France) are very signifigant. You have to really want to go to France in order to wade through all the BS paperwork. France is stuck between wanting to keep France French, and loosening up their visa process to bring more foriegners in for IT jobs.
If you're brave enough to wade through a French jobsite, I'd suggest Monster France, though you kinda have to know your French.
I also would not suggest looking at it as a finicial career move. I'm taking a large pay cut to work for this company, but I'm still making a lot of money as far as French salaries are concerned. I see this more as an adventure. Something to do while I'm still young. I don't want my memories of my youth filled with nothing but Team Fortress Half-life.

How do you know there won't be BLIT statements in the interpreter?
I don't. I'm just going on my (admittely) old knowledge of BASIC, and the little I know of graphics. It just seems very skeptical that anything could be done with BASIC on such a high-end playform.
Trains stop at a train station. Buses stop at a bus station.
What exactly can you do in BASIC for such a powerful gaming box? It would be really hard to make graphical objects in BASIC. I don't think this will be useful at all...
The only thing I can think of would be when the warez doodz rip PS2 games. Instead of just releasing them on IRC, they could put a little BASIC program in front of it. "This game brought to you by so-and-so doodz." Would be cool for a few seconds.....
btw, I've got a PS2, unopened & sealed, that I'm about to put on eBay. I'd rather not give eBay any money, I'd rather sell it to someone direct. If anyone would like to buy it, let me know.

So I have KDE installed on my penquin box, but I've never tried konquerer, so I'm like "hey! I'll give it a try!". I can't find it anywhere on the desktop, so I'm thinking I've got to install it..
So I bring up Netscape and go to http://www.kde.org and type Konquerer in the search box.
It comes up with a few matches........... and then the Netscape window crashes and goes away...

I REALLY wouldn't mind if someone DDOS'ed all the known and confirmed spammers in existence, or hacked into their servers and deleted their email database. I know it's illegal, but I really don't care. I'm really sick of spam. Spamcop doesn't work, legislation won't work, writing the ISPs about the abuse doesn't do anything (now I know why!!!). The lack of respect by these spammers is disgusting. They know wh0at they're doing, yet they continue.
I would even give money to support some organization whose sole purpose was to bring down known spammers and destroy their servers.
Go ahead and bitch me out for not going about it the right way/advocating hacking/whatever. This is how I feel.
I can't blame PSInet for this, they're young and needed the money (kinda like Cartman's mom). I would never work with them now, but I can see why they did it.

Ideally it would be possible to conceive a product on Friday evening, set up the
development environment Friday night, write code on Saturday and Sunday, test on Sunday night, and ship on Monday
morning.
He's kidding right? This might be ideal for managers, but I don't know any of my geek friends who would consider this ideal.
A programmer probably needs to
spend 25 hours per week getting coordinated with other programmers and comprehending the structures of the
systems being extended.
Where did he get this figure? From the Man-Month book? There's always an initial period of design that eats time, and various redesigns afterwards, but then there's the time spent churning away code that you don't talk to any of your co-workers, or very seldom.
On weekend mornings you could walk naked through an entire floor of our
headquarters building without fear of embarrassment.
They took a weekend morning OFF?!? Oh the shame!!! What lazy bastards!
Your business success will depend on the extent to which programmers essentially live at your office.
I see this programming ideal slipping away. I think people are realizing that no matter how many foosball tables you put in, programmers will burn out working 70+. I think that this ideal treats programmers as machines. As much as programmers like to think they ARE machines, they are humans and need rest. I think people are finding that if they go home and rest, they come back refreshed. Of course there are crunch periods, but once they're over, take a break.
Most people have a TV at home but
they don't have friends with whom to watch it.
er??? What is he talking about?!? Most people who have a TV don't have friends? Where is he getting this crap?
He does make some good points about the quality of programmers....

IMNSHO, Guinness is the best beer on the planet. There's nothing better than watching as a Guinness is poured and placed in front of you. I love how the head just keeps forming, long after the beer has been poured. It's a beer you have to wait for (and admire) before you have to drink.
I can see why people don't like it, considering it looks like motor oil, but it really is good. Try it. But please, pour it into a glass first! I've seen people drink Guinness from the bottle or can. That's an insult..... (btw, Guinness is the one beer that tastes MUCH better from a can than from a bottle. Stay away from the bottle. Of course, the best is from the tap.)
It's only 9:50AM... but I really want to go and find an open Irish Pub.

And you're probably still trying to finish that game as well... That game was @%$#@ IMPOSSIBLE!! Puzzles that had NO clues whatsoever. Bard's tale III was MUCH better.....
And I'll bite on the troll, 90% of the games you've seen suck?? Have you even looked at any recent games??? Or are you just restricting your new games to those for the apple II.... %90 of zero is........;-)
Trains stop at a train station. Buses stop at a bus station.
Anyone notice the striking similiarities between this and just before the crash of the 1980s? What with unlicensed games (which resulted in an incredible glut of
low quality crap and atari porno games (really!)) and the idea of turning your video console into the home computer. It didnt work then, what makes them
think it'll work now? History repeating itself...
The difference now is that the actualy CAN turn the platform into a home computer. 20 years ago (was it really that long ago) no one had home computers so no one gave a crap about turning the atari into a PC. Now that everyone has a PC, the idea of crossing your gaming platform over becomes obvious. It can work, whether it will or not is another question.....
As for the glut of low quality crap and prOn (prOn on an Atari game!?!?! Gotta see it to believe it....), I disagree as well.... Every gaming platform has crap made by no name companies hoping to sell a few games, but it didn't effect the NES, the SNES, the PS and it won't effect any new system that comes out.
On a slightly different note, I just upgraded my PC. TBird proccessor, lots of new fangled shiny stuff, blah, blah. Then a thought occured to me, will this be the last home PC (in the traditional sense) that I ever buy? If a PS2 or PS3 can do everything my PC can, with a few extra devices, why would I need a PC anymore?
Then I thought that the reason the PC is so succesfull is because it's very open and you can do so many things yourself with it. Someone earlier made a point about opening up the PS2, and I think they're right. PCs are so popular because people can write programs like Napster and let everyone use them for free. EVERYTHING on a PS2 will have to be bought from some manufacturer, and I won't be able to write my own things for it.
That right there, IMHO, will keep any future gaming platform as a niche product. A very lucrative product, mind you, but a niche none the less. The PC isn't going anywhere if they don't let us hackers play with any new gaming platform.
Sorry if this is old news/ideas for people.

I installed Mandrake on a machine at work that was no longer being used (ie. the guy quit). Our network manager came around the next day and asked me what I was going to be using it for, why did I install it, etc. He then asked me to delete because he "didn't know what kind of effect it would have on the network." Our network, btw, is a bunch of NT machines with an Exchange server (bet ya couldn't see that coming.)
Anyway, we bitched and argued, he said he didn't want a "rogue" OS on his network. Eventually my boss had to come in and settle it. I turned off the computer.
I think he was pissed about Linux "fouling" up his network and half that I didn't ask his permission before installing an OS. The latter I can understand, in an anal retentive way, but the first is just plain ignorance...

In actual comparative benchmarking, Java is faster than C in two of the three tests done. I'm not
aware of any recent benchmarking which has come to the opposite conclusion. If your Java is slower than your C, that's your coding, not Java.
What are you talking about? I looked at the link and there are two out of three tests where C flat out beats Java in speed. The third has Java and C trading off as the array size gets higher, but the average speed of C is higher than Java in this case. What do you mean, two out of three tests?

This is just another example of how freedom and the free market are totally incompatible.
I'm not sure I agree with this. Why isn't it possible for me to buy the products I want in a free market and at the same time not have someone write down who I am, what I bought, etc??? A free market has sucessfully existed and thrived long before mailing lists, ecommerce and crappy marketing tactics have existed.
I think it's VERY possible to have both privacy and a free market.
You're complaining about a treaty you haven't even seen, and which an article merely casts vague aspersions about? There's no hint of a
public draft, let alone reliable information on a final version or exact terminology ("hacking device" perhaps being a reporter's term. It
certainly was used unquoted in articles distributed widely in January on "rumor" sites, with an alleged document in Dutch).
You're right that I don't have a copy of the treaty right in front of me, but I think we all have enough information to figure out what is going on. We've all seen legislation/treaties like this (DMCA comes to mind), and we've seen the damage that it has done. Even without the manuscript in front of me, I can read between the lines and draw some conclusions about this treaty. And I don't like what I'm drawing...
They could easily define it as "a device whose primary purpose is facilitating unauthorized access to network services" or somesuch. And
judges, well, there's a reason why we have expert witnesses, no?
True.... but you're forgetting that this treaty would give law enforcement officials the right to search and seize equipement based on what THEY feel is a "hacking device". I DO NOT trust the government's judgement on what is a "hacking device". They could search my apartment and confiscate all my computers and then figure out that I'm not using a "hacker device". That's shooting first and asking questions later, and that's crap.
I might use a sniffer program to diagnose network security on the net. The FBI doesn't like that, they kick down my door, confiscate all my computers, make my life hell. It goes to court. An expert witness testifies that a sniffer has uses that are legitimate. The court says, "Sorry! Here's your stuff back!". Justice served?? Hell no! They shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Note also, that the courts could rule that since a sniffer can be used to hack something, it is a "hacker device", regardless of anything.
There's nothing we can do about this. We can't write to our congressmen, they have no power in this arena. Can the supreme court override an international treaty as unconstitutional? I think that will be our only hope.
This treaty is ripe with ways to abuse it. What constitutes a hacking device? A perl script that probes a network? If I run a perl script like that, by this treaty the US will have to provide a way for law enforcement to search my home and confiscate my equipement. How is qualified to judge what exactly is a hacking device.
Just look around, you'll see that Time Warner is a member of the RIAA and MPAA, which means that they want to proprietarize the formats SNIP ("AOL is about security"), and then read the thousands of stories about hackers breaking into AOL and stealing personal information (as
easy as fish in a barrel).
I honestly didn't know all this..... Live and learn I guess...
I still will argue about content not vanishing because of this merger, but I think I'll take back all my comments about going easy on AOL......
This will only further proprietarize the music and movie industry, turning Time Warner into yet another Sony. Similar to the situation after
Disney bought/formed (I can't remember which) the GO Network and had all ABC programs advertising it, you'll probably see a hell of a lot
more advertisements for AOL, both obvious commercials, and sneaky references ("AOL keyword CNN").
What exactly do you mean by "proprietarize" the movie & music industry?
How are you figuring that their broadband service will get a crappy ping?
I think everyone should give the Internet a little more credit that they are. I hear a lot of people saying that content is coming to an end on the internet. And that everything you hear, see and buy will be filtered through Aol-TimeWarner. I don't see this happening at all. The web surfers that made/., yahoo, and amazon (all small players when they started) popular will still be around to make sure that good independent sites get eyeballs.
Yes, a lot of people will be sucked into the filtered content that AolTimeWarner will offer, but a) This is not new. The masses have been ignorant of the truth and seeing through the fog of propaganda since Jesus was born. b) A lot of them will grow up and use other ISPs, just like they're doing now.
The fact that this merger is even happening is evidence that both AOL and TimeWarner were scared. Why? Because they both feared that they would be left behind. AOL with no fast access, and TimeWarner with no way to distribute their internet content. So they merged. Yippee. You'll still get your news from BBC and/., stinkymeat will still gross you out and user friendly will still make you laugh.
P.S. Go easy on AOL. While most people here agree that AOL is slow and is the last ISP they want to use, a lot of people like the fact that it is easy to use and has everything they want right in front of them. They'll grow up....;-)
I think this boycott is pointless. I think everyone here would agree that nothing is completely secure, especially when it's thrown out on the internet. No matter what the SDMI (pronounced "SDuMI"), gives out as "protection" it will be cracked in short order. Don't they realize this? I guess that they think that if those "evil hacker people" are the ones helping protect "their" music, then it must be safe.
The boycott is dumb. Whatever comes of this hacker challenge will be just be hacked again. Therefore I consider this 10 grand easy, quick money.
I found college fun, and it was a good way for me to hook up with some job experience in computers. But other than that, it was a waste of
money.
"Other than that???" Jesus, what were you looking for out of college??? Did you think they were going to turn you into Bill Gates once you got a degree?? (Bad example, Gates doesn't have a degree).
People argue that college doesn't teach them anything new relevant to their degree. While that is true for some people, half of college is not about getting a degree. It's about getting life experience and exploring who you are. You cannot do that stuck in a cubicle or on a two-week vacation.
People also argue that people in colleges are behind the times. I completely disagree. You're not going to stop playing with computers and reading up on tech just because you also have to study. You're still going to be fiddling with new stuff, which is exactly what gave you your tech love to begin with.
One of the kids in the article said that college will always be there for you. WRONG!!! As I said before, half of college is about life experience, gaining life long friends, and learning different things. Once you're 23, this has passed you by. Of course you can still get a degree, but what a degree actually means is not that you've taken classes and are officially "smart", it's that you can think in different ways and have had experiences beyond programming. This is valuable stuff and it's why degrees are sought out.
I think that anyone who has the opportunity to go to college and skips out is a fool. Yes, you will probably be successful and make lots of money and be happy. But you are missing out on one of the best times of your life, and it is something that you CANNOT go back to once it has passed. Go to college, it's worth it.....

If I run a perl script like that, by this treaty the US will have to provide a way for law enforcement to search my home and confiscate my equipement. How is qualified to judge what exactly is a hacking device.
This is very scary stuff.....

SNIP
("AOL is about security"), and then read the thousands of stories about hackers breaking into AOL and stealing personal information (as easy as fish in a barrel).
I honestly didn't know all this..... Live and learn I guess...
I still will argue about content not vanishing because of this merger, but I think I'll take back all my comments about going easy on AOL......

The web surfers that made /., yahoo, and amazon (all small players when they started) popular will still be around to make sure that good independent sites get eyeballs.
Yippee. You'll still get your news from BBC and /., stinkymeat will still gross you out and user friendly will still make you laugh.
P.S. Go easy on AOL. While most people here agree that AOL is slow and is the last ISP they want to use, a lot of people like the fact that it is easy to use and has everything they want right in front of them. They'll grow up.... ;-)

The boycott is dumb. Whatever comes of this hacker challenge will be just be hacked again. Therefore I consider this 10 grand easy, quick money.
