What amount of research and development goes into molding an embossed X on a plastic case? The XBox is a PC built with commodity PC parts minus what I listed above.
And you just try and get tech support for a Playstation or Nintendo. It doesn't even exist! Walmart carries your warranty, that's it. Besides, we weren't talking about the cost of marketing and executive offices, we were talking about the price of the console.
That's why low level attorneys and accountants arranged for money to be donated to independent grass roots movements that took the actions independent of Microsoft.
The bubble was officially and loudly pointed out to everyone in every media outlet through August and September 1998, but you were all too busy blowing your wad into it hoping enough wishful thinking could keep it inflated. So it lasted another year and a half. Anyone who wasn't out by April 2000 deserves what they got. VA's opening day was definitely a very loud POP!
Now, if someone decides to target me and is able to sniff all my traffic for several days, then if they harness all the computing power in the world, they could crack my user password in a measley few milleniums!

The next page in the document that you linked to expands on the real competition to Microsoft's dotNET strategy. IBM calls it e-sourcing, and its good to see a big company gearing up to resist the bandwagon dotNET is trying to create. I don't know if IBM has an alternative to Passport, or how they will try to bring it to consumers (B2B adoption first?) -- but they are definitely gearing up to go head to head with Microsoft for control of the next generation of computer services.
I don't know of any other corporation with the same strategy -- what is Sun doing besides complaining about a lack Java runtime on Windows XP? And I don't know if what corporations do will affect the free software community. But I'm pretty sure a Linux based services based internet will be more tolerant of my personal home page than a Hailstorm based one.
Bruce Scheier has been full of shit for at least several years. He wrote Applied Cryptography. Thanks. What else has he done. I don't even read cryptogram anymore because all it is is a plug for his new book "Hire Counterpane and buy our anti-h4x0r insurance!"
of a problem with java, rather than otherwise. It takes more java programmers to write less code (technically more code, if you count lines, bytes, or bogomips)
Linux, meanwhile, is the fastest-growing server OS in terms of market share, according to research firm IDC's estimates, though it still lags Windows by a wide margin
I've seen it repeated dozens of times in the last month or two. I guess Apache on windows is really popular. And why bother with.NET (or change SMB) if windows already has the lion's share of the server market?
I don't know what it means. I don't even know if you spelled it right. But I know what you mean from context. you could substitute 'mnaxoarfoof' for 'de rig...etc.' and you would be just as eloquent. Including the phrase doesn't demonstated any intelligence except for your knowledge of html.

buying stock doesn't help redhat. nomatter how much you paid for it. The IPO is over. They sold the stock two years ago. It is now traded on the open market. Now, if they issue more shares you could buy them, but you probably won't make a ripple in the price. Or, if you own enough, you could vote not to go bankrupt or close the source at a shareholder meeting.
They'd like you (and the IRS) to believe that. The average user probably buys two games.
I can build a basic computer system for under $400 (including DVD and hard drive). That's with a $35 case and onboard video & sound. It'll cost me $100 for good 3D video, but video cards have the highest margin by a mile. Do you think microsoft can't negotiate a deal to get parts at 75% of my cost?
And when you take into account a console doesn't have to worry about buses and compatibility and and ports and peripherals, you get huge savings. One board, no slots, 2 joystick ports. Hypothetical ethernet. No 250-300W power supply. Plastic. No middlemen.
Skylarov first entered the US, and then was arrested, and then accused of breaking the US law before he had entered the US. The last two happened in close proximity, so I don't know about the order, but its pretty irrelavent. He didn't have a chance to find out he was breaking the law before he was arrested.

the Game Cube will still be on shelves before the X Box. And so will games for it.
