And the common denominator in all this is: Make yourself approachable and give other people some sort of excuse to start a conversation. It's not f***ing rocket science.

I don't think it was so much the Muslim background as it was the poor choice of location and conversation topic. If I was at the airport and I overheard a white family having a similar conversation, I'd probably report it too and I'd be surprised if things didn't play out the same way. With that said, profiling, racial, and even gender differences are a way of life, whether of not we would like them to be. We shouldn't just cite racism every time and throw common sense out the window. This family should not have been having this conversation in the middle of an airport. A dark-skinned man should not j-walk in the evening if he's wearing dark colored clothes because he'll be hard to see. Women should not walk around at night by themselves in the sketchy parts of town. Common sense first people!

Does this mean we may get to see MythTV integrated into XBMC? The two working together sounds like the ultimate media center to me.

  4. Re:No on Will The iPhone Kill The iPod? · · Score: 1

It depends on what your needs are and when you use your phone and ipod.

At 115 x 61 mm and at 135g, it's on the big and heavy end of what I like to be carrying around in my pocket all day or running with when I'm working out.

Compare with the nano or shuffle which you barely notice when you're exercising. The d900 from Samsung weighs in at 50g less.

I'm sure the iPhone will appeal to some of those in the smartphone market, but as it was pointed out, the lack of 3rd party apps means even that'll be limited. In addition a good chunk of iPods sales seem to go to the teenage and college market and it's doubtful that most of them will want or need a lot of the smartphone features of the iPhone. Not to mention the premium in price will be a bigger factor for that age group with the features harder to justify.

So no, until they can make the iPhone more functional (and smaller) to mimic the ease in which I use and carry around my iPod nano and cell phone now, I don't see the iPod dying anytime soon.

  9. Search Engine usage vs. OS usage on Google's Silent Monopoly · · Score: 1

There's a difference between the two because Google, as popular as it is, has just under half of the search engine market (comScore, Nielsen NetRatings) while Microsoft pretty much dominates the entire OS market with "a global usage share of 96.97 percent"(http://www.onestat.com/html/aboutus_press box46-operating-systems-market-share.html). The other difference is that Windows is sold (and so one could argue that choices such as the browser or media player used should be given to person using the OS) while Google is pretty much a free service that sustains itself almost entirely through it's advertising. Let's put it this way. General Electric owns NBC. NBC makes its money through ads. If GE decides its dishwashers get better ad placement and cheaper rates, who's to say otherwise? If people don't like it, they can flip to another channel. The only one losing money is GE and Google, since they could've sold that spot to an outside competitor.
