It actually comes down to being about free will. The whole point of the story is to point out that humans are not fighting against good and evil, but either choosing God's path or not choosing our own path. It was suppossed to be a choice, and God does not punish us for not choosing him, its that without him we make decisions that hurt each other and ourselves. That's the actual theology of it, for any of you who are interested.

While the fields are unrelated, I would ask the Slashdot community a question, if the Bush administration was attacking "science" as some have been so bitterly protesting, why is it just evolutionary science he's attacking? Evolution has a great many valid points, but it is far from flawless, and by far I would have to say that there are certain holes within it that if they cannot be explained show a failing for the theory, not in reference to natural selection or in mutations producing species, but in the macro-evolutionary perspective of "ape to man." Because they love their country, and could care less about the stupid partisan politics that the people of this country refuse to involve themselves in other than cursory complaining.

Their is a democracy, but the people refuse to vote there, the people refuse to involve themselves in their countries politics, so tell me, who's fault is it, me and my 200,000 buddies all working our asses off to better our country in at least some way, or you, mocking my friends and my fellow men/women at arms?

Another thing you need to understand is, look at the rapid advances in tech, how long do you think an electromagnetic society would last in any given alien culture. For us, its only been going on for what 100 years? Now extrapolate that, electromagnetic communication is getting more and more specific, and soon(define soon however you want) we may even break into communication devices operating on a quantum level, how long do you think a society will last using communication methods that you can observe over the vast reaches of space? 200 years, 400 years? Not much time at all, because we would have to be listening for it, and how much longer will we be listening before we just move onto expanding into space? I'm sure there is a lot of room for arguments on both sides, but to me it seems less likely that we haven't seen evidence because seeing the evidence would take FAR more coincidence than forming life from the soup does.

You can elect officials or not elect them, but neither one implies that they will look out for the interests of the people. Democracy is entirely over-rated, if it is so successful why is the US choking on its own corruption? You cannot make a perfect governmental system, you cannot make a system that will ensure moral and just leaders, so arguing about whether elected officials or non-elected officials have your best interests in mind is entirely off base, since you cannot guarantee either one will care about the best interests of the country.

Last I checked being intelligent did not save any ACTUAL work, more or less it just saved me having to waste time on concepts and I ended up with more time spent on the actual work. I think I had success because when I was working on homework, I was working on hoemwork, not trying to catch up on what was taught in class. Maybe its just me.... Also I do believe that most of a lack of understanding about subjects is the way that schools avoid the difficult concepts until later. The same goes for being a doctor, most of what goes on in these fields are set in stone, and while there is advancement in both, it is not the daily fair. Science on the other hand, doesn't care about what it already knows, its constantly seeking to find out things it doesn't know, or can't figure out. If anyone should be held accountable its the media, and their amazing ability to sensationalize one man's good idea that he may have the chance of proving when the funds come in from the grant.
